2015 KENTUCKY WESLEYAN COLLEGE www.kwc.edu 1-800-999-0592 Dear Student: Let’s get this school year started! The Wesleyan campus is ready for your arrival, or your return, depending on your status. Many things are happening in preparation for you. Each day on this campus is a wonderful day for me, but it isn’t quite the same without you here every day (I must admit that from time to time I have to stop and make sure the new Panther statue in front of the Winchester Center understands you are coming back, as this was its first summer … ). The new Kendall Hall will be ready for you, and it will be an amazing residence hall and a great addition to our campus. The new Panther’s Den will be finished in the Winchester Center by the time you return. It will now be located between Jazzman’s and the fireplace in the Winchester Center to make room for the new Center for Engaged Teaching and Learning. The Center is part of a $2.1 million grant Wesleyan was awarded in competition with other colleges and universities across the country. This Center will be a tremendous addition and supplement to your education. You will hear much more about this exciting and cutting edge initiative when you return. You probably heard that Wesleyan accounting students had the highest average score on the CPA exam compared to all other colleges and universities in Kentucky. This is even more evidence of the great faculty available to you and is proof of the caliber of our students. Owensboro Living Magazine readers voted Wesleyan the Best Local College in the area. On August 28 (just a few days after you return), Wesleyan will host Friday After 5 downtown on the riverfront! There will be music, games, food and tons of fun. You certainly need to be there showing off your Wesleyan purple and letting everyone know how connected we are to this community. Please know that you are a special person at a special college. Each of you is a powerful ingredient to what IS Wesleyan. The Wesleyan Way is for, about and because of all of us together, and I am so excited to see you soon and start an incredible year. Remember to look for the Panther statue wearing a purple scarf near the beginning of the semester — that means we will be grilling out behind the President’s House … it won’t be long! I hope you had a fantastic summer and are as ready as I am to have one of the greatest years ever at Wesleyan! Hurry up and get here … I have missed you! President Barton D. Darrell #TheWesleyanWay

Dear Student:

Let’s get this school year started!

Dear Student:The Wesleyan family is anxiously awaiting your arrival to campus this fall! Everyone on campus has been working vigorously to ensure you have an eventful and exciting time at Wesleyan. Depending on your class year, I hope you are ready to start, continue or finish this part of your journey in life. Wesleyan has everything you need for a successful college career.

Four years – 40 months – 20,000 hours. Regardless of how you divide it, your college experience will take a good amount of time. I hope you take advantage of every opportunity while you are at Wesleyan to learn, grow, make friendships and get involved.

Your success is the top priority of the faculty, staff and even your peers. Wesleyan is a close-knit campus, and everyone around you wants you to prosper in all you do. Kentucky Wesleyan has helped shape me into the person I am today, and coming here was one of the best decisions I have ever made. At the end of your time here, I know you will agree.

“The most important piece of advice about choosing a major or career follows this sentence. The advice is: ‘Don’t panic.’”

Randal S. Hansen, Ph.D.

Some students know exactly what they want to do in life, but the majority of students do not. That is okay. Many students change their major at least once (some several times) during their college careers. Stop by my office. I can help.

Individual career counseling, assessments for career and educational planning and job shadowing are just a few examples of how Career Development can help students explore career fields.

Career Development offers workshops to help with resumes, cover letters, interviewing, networking, business etiquette and other soft skills to assist students in marketing themselves to graduate schools, professional programs and employers.

The Career Development Center strongly encourages students to:

• Find seasonal employment or internship opportunities, at least two while in college, in their chosen field which provide “relevant experience.”

• Join clubs, organizations and hold positions of leadership while in school to develop “leadership skills.”

• Volunteer and participate in service learning opportunities in the community for “community involvement.”

All of the above strengthen a student’s personal and civic profile, and provide depth and substance to their resume, which makes

them more attractive to employers and professional programs.

The Career Development Center also:

• Helps students understand what the business and professional world seeks in a college graduate.

• Develops relationships with area employers and organizations for internships and employment.

• Posts job and internship opportunities on the Wesleyan Career Development website.

The Service Learning portion of the center, formally established in 2012, seeks to establish and facilitate relationships with the community in order to foster experiential education, specifically service learning. These opportunities integrate meaningful

community service with instruction and reflection to enhance the academic curriculum of the students, teach civic responsibility, encourage lifelong civic engagement and strengthen communities for the common good.

Stop by Room 212 of the Administration Building or email Margaret Cambron at [email protected] for an appointment.

The office is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is located in room 213 of the Administration Building. All information and communication with students will be confidential unless written permission to inform others is given. Health care services include over-the-counter medication, bandages, ice and heat packs, ointments, blood sugar and blood pressure checks, and flu vaccinations. Health and meningitis forms must be in the student’s file to receive care. With the exception of

flu vaccinations, Student Health Services are free to all students. First aid and CPR classes are offered each semester. Students are required only to pay for the cost of the certification card ($7).

• Please study these suggestions as you prepare for the academic year, and take action before you arrive.

• Talk with your primary care provider regarding a meningitis vaccination.

• Consider undergoing a physical examination (required for all scholar-athletes and administered during check in), and ask for a copy of your immunization records. These will be required for many off-campus internships.

Kentucky Wesleyan requires that all full-time students (with the exception of online students) have health insurance coverage. If you currently have none, you may consider coverage on your parents’ plan if you are under 26 years of age.
