STEVE’S SCOOP Hello, Fall Liners! Welcome to a new year for Fall Line

Ski Club! Thank you very much for electing me as President-

elect almost exactly one year ago, on my birthday, April 17, 2018. I won’t say WHICH birthday, though!

I have served as President-elect since the May 2018 board meeting and now begin my term as your President as of May 1st.

My name is Steve Beach, and I have been with the club since WAY back in March 1992!

I am probably most familiar to most members as the trip leader for our annual kayak trip on the Egg Harbor River in Weymouth, NJ, the Saturday after the July 4th weekend. I have been running that event for probably 20 years now!

I want to say thank you VERY MUCH to all of the volunteers who step up to help Fall Line Ski Club run so well. There are many, from event leaders for small hours-long events all the way up to the winter trip weekend, full week, and 8-10 day Europe ski trips, and also the officers and board members. Please consider volunteering yourself for a board position or to lead an event – we can surely use you!

I’d like to say a special thank-you to five Fall Line Ski Club “heavyweights” whose current board terms are expiring: Siobhan Michaud, Joe Broski, Janice Lynch, Kathie Read, and Mike Houlihan. These folks have given quite a lot of time to the club over several years, and I consider as club leaders whether or not they are on the board. Fortunately, two of them ran again for 2-year board terms, and I will be appointing at least another one to another board term, as their contributions and dedication to the club are invaluable.

Finally, check out the big slate of upcoming events in this newsletter, email “blasts”, etc., and come out and join the fun!

Steve Beach

SNOWMASS By Julie Mead

What an amazing trip we had with an awesome

group of people. We were indeed happy to have the Philly contingent join us this year. The flight out had a slight hiccup when a plastic bag was sucked into the jet engine, so it was back to maintenance and we had an almost 2 hour delay. The flight out after that was great and the bus to the lodge was clean and the driver very helpful. The bus company scheduled in a stop at the liquor store and grocery store so we were able to stock up on necessary supplies. We had a very late arrival but the Stonebridge Inn staff met us with our envelopes all out and ready to go. This was the fastest I have seen a group checked in and the front desk staff couldn’t have been nicer.

Everyone seemed to have a great first day skiing and the wine and cheese party Sunday night was a fun way to end our first day. Marianne and her friend Phil showed up to say hi to everyone as they were staying just down the road. Thursday night was a fun Mexican Fiesta with lots of really good food. Former Fall Line members Roberta and Michael showed up for a visit so that was a treat for Wayne and Joanne.

With 4 mountains there was plenty of snow to choose from. Barry, Nona, Dave and Steve spent a day at Aspen Highlands and regaled me with tales of how fast they were skiing. Nona O has this amazing app that shows how fast and how far they skied each day!

Aspen offers no easy trails so this novice was quite happy listening to everyone else rate their adventures. Kathy, Bob, Linda, Greg and John all had a wonderful time on Aspen Mtn. They did the tour with their Austrian ambassador Gerhard, aka Alex. He spent 3 hours with them showing them around and telling them about the Viennese restaurant he used to own in Aspen.

Everyone really seemed to enjoy skiing Buttermilk. The mountain offers some diverse terrain with 35% easy, 39% intermediate and 26% expert. We were hit with snow on Friday morning and many of the group had a wonderful time at Buttermilk. The snow was quite heavy they said so skiing was challenging.

Snowmass was great for the ability to get to the slopes quickly. A short walk from the Inn and you were on the snow. Being a newbie I took the Elk Camp gondola up to the beginner area and took a 3 hour lesson. They offered several skiing challenges for beginners and the instructors were great. The food court at Elk Camp had some amazing food choices, including gluten free pizza! I also enjoyed trying the Scooper and Dawdler green trails. Ted and Beverly took the lift up and skied down to a wonderful spot for lunch. The Cliff Lodge had a huge fire pit with comfy Adirondack chairs where they enjoyed Mongolian bowls. The inn’s

breakfast buffet offered many choices and was included in our package.

The hotel had a great bar and a nice restaurant. The Stew Pot in Snowmass Village was a big hit for all who tried it. A group of us went to the Hotel Jerome in Aspen for dinner. The hotel was restored with so many amazing artifacts and has the most amazing original pressed tin ceiling circa 1889 in the J Bar. Many of the floors as well as the library ceiling are original to the hotel. It was a good dinner but at $1,000 a night the rooms are not on our list of things to do.

Sadly, Saturday dawned and it was time to bid Snowmass farewell. The bus company sent a substitute bus which sadly was quite lacking. Not only were they late arriving there was NO RESTROOM!! The driver was very good though and made a stop for us all and got us safely through the ice, fog and snow. We were blessed that the ice and snow were not as bad as feared in the pass and we arrived with enough time. I was relieved that we didn’t depart the following weekend as there were snow slides and road closures. The plane ride home was uneventful and all luggage and skis arrived on time.

Once again, I want to thank all the members who joined Barry and I on this great adventure. Your help and friendliness made my first ski trip wonderful. We are looking forward to more fun times next year with Fall Line Ski Club.

CRESTED BUTTE By Barry Schofield

Crested Butte might not be the largest ski area in North America, but there is an abundance of skiing terrain on the mountain. With a Summit of over 12,000 feet (3,700 meters) and a base area at 9,375 feet (2,856 meters) it is high enough to offer some outstanding powder. Sporting 121 trails and 14 lifts there was plenty of ski area for us average skiers and experts alike.

Unfortunately being a smaller area flying into the Gunnison International Airport was a challenge. Being that the airport has all of 3 gates we should have expected some SNAFUs (situation normal all fouled up) at our arrival. The airport did not disappoint. Everyone’s bags were left in Dallas, but being Fall Liners we pressed on to our destination. We split into 2 groups in each of the small shuttle vans to the ski area. If you were lucky enough to be in the first van you had the privilege of having the mayor of Crested Butte, Jim Schmidt be your driver. Mayor Schmidt gave us the nickel tour of the town of Crested Butte. Check in went without trouble and almost all bags were of course, delivered to the hotel after midnight.

Saturday night was our wine and cheese orientation

presented by a resort representative. The gentleman was knowledgeable and friendly.

Skiing started on Sunday with sunny skies and wonderful terrain. No complaints at the Butte 66 sports bar for Eagles watching except of course the Eagles lost against the Saints in their Divisional game. That was a bummer, but we were still on vacation.

The staff at the Butte 66 was exceptionally gracious by staying open on Tuesday for our official Fall Line happy hour. We were fortunate that it seemed that most of the staff was South Jersey natives. Our waitress and the bartender were both originally from Williamstown. Good company, good food and beer. What more can you ask for.

Midweek the snow Gods came to add 20 inches to the already significant base and the conditions were close to perfect.

Of course our skiing did not pass without challenges. Tom, Mary Ellen, Al, Bob, Barry, Kathy, & Sandy accidently skied on a trail to the double black diamonds trying to get to the Paradise Express lift. Unfortunately we proceeded onto a poorly marked trail. The group was not so sure this was a safe idea. But we kept going for fear of turning back wasn’t a good plan either. As it turned out Barry lead the way past the very serious tails though the trees. Barry found a trail we could all attack. Happily we arrived at the bottom of the trail smiling.

Our Friday leftover party was a success. Thank you to Jeff Thomas and Sally Godman for setting it up and thanks to all 17 Fall Liners who left the Taylor room clean and pristine after we were done.

Of course Saturday came along and all good things have to come to an end. We all made the airport including one of our Fall Liners was picked up at the hospital. He was fine and an uneventful flight back to Philadelphia where all was good except of course for the luggage. Half of our travelers did not get their skis. It took forever filling out the paperwork and eventually we all made it out of the airport. There is a silver lining in every cloud, most of us filed complaints against American Airlines and had our baggage fees returned.

On a cold sunny Friday the majority of our group loaded the “Party Bus” to Newark Airport. Huge Thank You to Debbie Serba for donating the case of Prosecco, Annalisa R. and Linda L. for the homemade Lemoncello, and Judy W. for the homemade Bailey’s! Also thanks to Ken Kushner for being the bartender. Yes, we drank it all!

We found the remainder of our group at a bar (no surprise there) in Newark. When we arrived in Munich our bus was waiting. Upon arrival it was a quick check-in at the Hotel Tyrol with an informative ski area orientation before dinner. The dining staff was outstanding and thanks to Marion R. for the German translation. Sunday In Sölden

I woke up early to head over to purchase our group’s ski passes for the week. Once they were distributed after breakfast, most of the group was off to begin their ski adventure while others took time exploring Sölden. That afternoon I went bar hopping with Linda L. and Barry S. by starting at Marco’s which had great music and was packed. We ended up getting bar seats with an adorable bartender at the KuckKuck. We moved on to Phillips, which was at the top of the Funicular close to our hotel jamming with great dance music. After dinner Judy W. and Donna R. went across the street to check out another bar called Live.

The ski bus was just outside our hotel, taking us to the modern Gaislachjoch 10-person gondola. We then took another gondola where we could ski across the valley to the end of day. Those who skied were treated to lots of snow making it to the other large ski area, the Giggijoch. Skiing was just as tough there as everything is above tree line, so there was no real definition. We were only able to get to the first glacier, the Rettenbach, but no further as the snow and wind were too much. The 8-person gondola took us across this huge valley (mind you at 10,000 feet), it’s a BIG drop to the bottom! Several folks went to see the recently built Ice Q to view the show “Elements”, a depiction of the production of several James Bond movies. Fun fact, Sölden was the primary location for the shooting of the Bond film “Spectre”. It was an entertaining and informative way to spend a snowy afternoon. Many made reservations to have lunch at the Ice Q Restaurant located at the top of the Gaislachkogl gondola with breathtaking views and delicious Austrian food and drinks.

Monday morning I headed out with Debbie Serba, Annalisa R. and Alice C. to ski for the first time in two years. After the Gondola, we took the bubble chair where we soon hit near zero visibility. I only made it down halfway before getting cutoff, which effectively ended my ski season. I injured my knee and had to get rescued off

the mountain (Just two words … trip insurance!). The locals were so very nice and stayed to make sure no one skied over me. As I was being loaded into the ambulance, I heard the familiar voice of Ken Koch who had injured his shoulder. You can read his story below with a big thanks to our Florence Nightingale Debbie Serba for getting us and

our ski gear back to the hotel safely. More snow Monday as we headed back to the Giggijoch

to do more crazy skiing in the whiteout. Shirley C., Ann M. and Ken K. opted for the long black run #14 on piste, while Zion C. decided to go off piste. Shirley and Ann picked their way down the mogul filled powder, blinded by the snow. They were towards the bottom of the run, when they noticed Ken K. was nowhere to be found. Zion went back up to find Ken while Shirley and Ann skied to the slopeside village of Hochsolden on both a fairly tame expert run and a treacherous intermediate run.

Ken was skiing off piste when he skied over a rock and got buried in the powder of the untracked section due to the heavy snowfall and flat light. He hit hard with both poles thrusting them upwards so violently the left upper humerus was jammed into the shoulder ball shattering it. A snowboarder came by and offered to call ski patrol but Ken was in an isolated area. After a half hour sitting behind his crossed skis and getting covered in snow, he realized he had to get the skis back on and “snow shoe” out of there. After getting his skis on and side stepping down the ridge, where he could see the lift towers, he re-crossed his skis to wait. Two snowboarders stopped to help and then Zion came skiing up to them. They dismantled a snow fence so he could slither under it onto the regular run. Zion skied over to the tower to get its number and the boarders flew down to tell patrol. Zion wouldn’t leave him and 10 minutes later they arrived. Ski patrol put a sling on the arm, loaded him on the snowmobile and said “hold on” (with one arm). A bit dicey but he managed not to fall off. After meeting up with me in the ambulance, we had to go to the farther clinic since the closest one was overflowing with injuries like a disaster scene with more incoming injuries. Ken ended up with a broken arm and shoulder with a long recovery but no surgery and I had a badly sprained knee.

One thing Ann M. has discovered after 30 years of skiing

(Continued from page 4) in Europe is that the piste difficulty markers really don’t mean much. It is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you are going to get.

Tuesday was gorgeous with blue skies and just the right temperature for great skiing. Our lift ticket also allowed us to ski Obergurgl and Hochgurgl, two linked ski areas that were just a quick 20-minute free bus ride away. We found

great snow and a beautiful mountaintop restaurant where we were the only customers! We can’t download on the chairlift? We have to ski in this snow on the narrow winding cat tracks? Okay, here we go again!

While the dedicated skiers braved a heavy snowfall, Nona L., Marion R. and Joe L. walked the charming town of Sölden. They discovered how beautiful the snow covered stream looked, found a covered bridge, saw park benches, swings and artistic signs framed with inches of snow. To warm up they found a little bistro that served the best Glühwein.

Wednesday night a group of us (Moriah N., Mike W., Laura & Ken K., and Annalisa R.) went dancing at Katapult. The DJ had the place jamming with dancers on platforms and an acrobatic dancer in a bubble that opened up so she was hanging out of the bottom with no wires. No brass pole required. Also on Wednesday evening, another group bought the night gondola ticket to attend the ski show at the top of the Gaislachkogl. What a blast! At nightfall the ski school demos started and they were incredible. Speed skiing in figure eights down the icy dark slope carrying torches, lights reading Sölden and skiing through fiery circles. It was unlike anything they had ever witnessed capped off by a spectacular fireworks finale. Innsbruck

Thursday, the majority of our group headed to Innsbruck for a one day excursion where we were met by an English speaking guide who gave us a fabulous tour of the historic area. After the tour we went shopping at the Swarovski store (the factory is close to Innsbruck) and then had several hours on our own. Donna R., Judy W., Alice C. and I had a delicious Austrian lunch at the Ottoburg, one of the oldest restaurants in town. Peter G. and Mary Ann E. enjoyed the funicular with beautiful views overlooking the city and then capped off with a delicious Sacher torte at the

famous Cafe Sacher. Friday was another whiteout day, so Eileen G. and

Ann M. ventured back to the Gaislach hoping for better visibility. They got to the top of the gondola and while the visibility wasn’t great the powder was beautiful; and they had the slopes to themselves!

Maybe we prayed just a little too hard for snow in Sölden as we certainly got more snow than we hoped. When we arrived there wasn’t any visible snow in town, but that quickly changed as it snowed hard for five of the six days. There was deep powder in the higher elevations and heavy wet snow at the tree line which made visibility near zero on two of the days. Linda L., Barry S. and Aleks B. had a glorious blue bird day which made up for the few days of difficult conditions. The snow was perfect on the glaciers and surrounding trails and most of the group got a full 8 hours of skiing before the lifts closed.

Pat and Ursula H. skied all 6 days and couldn’t get enough! They liked Sölden very much and thankfully were able to make it to the glaciers. That area was closed due to weather for several days but when they were able to go there had been about 8” of fresh snow and clear skis. They took two early runs down #31 with fresh tracks that were exhilarating (it’s the beginning of the World Cup Race). They spent 3 gorgeous days at Hochgurgl-Obergurgl.

Nona L., Eileen G., Jeff T. and Don K. took a day trip to Obergurgl and discovered the beautiful Edelweiss Hotel, where they served our new favorite cocktail – The Hugo and served the best Apple Strudel with Vanilla Sauce and lots of whipped cream. Heaven!

Friday was a good day for skiing and shopping since it was snowing. We went to KuckKuck for Happy Hour drinking their special shots served in real egg shells. At our final dinner, our group was generous leaving a very nice tip for our dining wait staff bringing them to tears. As a nice touch Steve L. and Marie Z. arrived dressed in vintage Austrian attire. Athens Adventure

On a still dark early Saturday morning, our group boarded the bus for the flight to ATHENS! We arrived to beautiful sunny skies with our tour guide and bus awaiting us. The Hotel Amelia was beautiful and located right in the center of town. Once checked in, the hotel treated us to a welcome drink of Ouzo … Can you say OPA … and light snacks and then off to explore Athens.

Sunday our tour guide met us at the hotel and off we went for our Athens walking tour. It was a gorgeous hot day and perfect weather for exploring. We meandered around town stopping for pictures and then walked up to the Acropolis, which is located at the top of a hill over sometimes slippery stoned walkways. The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel located on a rocky outcrop

(Continued from page 5) above the city of Athens containing the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historic significance; the most famous being the Parthenon. It was literally a picture perfect day with stunning views of Athens. We then went to the Acropolis Museum which is focused on the findings of the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Athens built to house every artifact found on the rock and on the surrounding slopes. Our tour guide was a wealth of knowledge and we all thoroughly enjoyed the tour. We ended our day in the Plaka neighborhood comprised of narrow cobblestone streets lined with tiny shops selling jewelry, clothes and local ceramics. Many of us found a Taverna for lunch, went shopping, or just strolled around the beautiful neighborhood.

I had planned a St. Patty’s Day gathering for Sunday night at Upper (a local bar) with a section for our group. The DJ had everyone dancing all night and if you ordered a Guinness, you received a complimentary large green hat which of course, we all were wearing by the end of the night.

From the roof-top of our hotel there were spectacular sunset views and the Acropolis. This inspired Nona L., Marion R., Joe L., and Patrick & Ursula H. to share cocktails on several occasions.

Our ‘Engagement Story’ (Moriah & Mike): “We were in Athens, Greece, and Mike woke me up early in the morning with a surprise flight to Santorini. Once we arrived, Mike had a crew waiting there for us: a tour guide/driver, videographer, and photographer. They took us all over the island for a photo shoot. At one point we were high up on top of a Dome with breathtaking views. Mike proposed to me right there. After giving me the ring he told me to turn around... and there stood my parents, his parents, my sister, her husband, and their kids. I was so ecstatic to have our family there to experience this pivotal moment in our lives! Mike did so well and I cry every time I look back on these pictures!” A romantic story for an amazing couple! Congrats to all! Island Adventure

Next day we were up early and off to our day cruise to three Islands. Our first stop was Hydra, where some of us took a guided tour while others explored on their own the many shops and cafes. Once back on the ship, we were treated to a buffet luncheon. Our next stop was the small island of Poros for exploring and pictures of the gorgeous views. Aegina was our last stop for the day. Ferries and boats dock right in Aegina Town, the main spot of the island. The majority of us took tours since you really needed transportation to see everything. The Temple of Aphaia is a top sight in Aegina and predates the Parthenon. This island is pistachio land and yes the pistachio ice cream IS

amazing. The nuts are harvested here with passion and considered the best in the world. Once back on board, we were treated to a beautiful sunset as we returned to Athens while drinking a glass of Prosecco. Life is Good! Free-Day Fun

Tuesday was our last day in Athens which was our “Free Day”. How does one squeeze in everything in one day? Starting out early was critical to get everything in. Many of us immediately went to watch the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown-soldier located outside of the parliament building across the street from our hotel. After seeing the pageantry, we broke into small groups or couples to continue our exploration of this beautiful city. Some explored the historical aspects of the city returning to the Acropolis Museum which contains artifacts from the Parthenon, then traveled on to; Dipylon’s Gate, ancient Agora and the Kerameikos Cemetery known for its ancient ruins. Others opted to further explore the Plaka neighborhood for dining and shopping finding many unusual and budget friendly items. An area of interest was the Lycabellus Acropolis which is the highest point in Athens which has a tiny church to explore and a great restaurant to enjoy. One could opt to walk up a steep hill and work up the appetite, or as most of us decided, take the cable car to the top. The views were of course magnificent allowing us to clearly see the stunning views and horizon as we dined on great Greek food and drank wine. Later in the day, many of us convened on the roof of our hotel with a glass of wine in hand to watch the sun set over the Acropolis and the Parthenon. Just a great way to end a glorious free day. A Fun Little Side Excursion

I had always wanted to go to Santorini so Alice C., Aleks B. and I decided to fly there for the day. We hired a private tour guide for the afternoon that dropped us off at Fira to start our day. We walked down the 587 steps to the Old Port while donkeys were walking up with packages on their backs. It was a scary descent since it was steep, winding switchbacks, cobblestone walkways and donkey doo (definitely not OSHA approved). We then did some shopping and took the Cable Car back up where we found a wonderful Greek restaurant for lunch. Our tour guide met us and off we went for our tour: Oia Village; Amoudi Bay; the Monastery; Black Beach; Red Beach and stops with magnificent panoramic views. Our last stop was at the Venetsanos Winery for wine tasting while sitting outside on a cliff with more wonderful breathtaking views. It was a very long day but well worth the visit.

(Continued from page 6) Thanks to article portions from Ann M., Ursula H., Mary Ann E., Nona L., Ken K., Greg F., Moriah N. and Linda L. Thanks to Kathie Read for the luggage tags. I would also like to thank everyone for the beautiful gold cross from Athens … I will forever treasure it with fond memories of our trip. Also thank you to Ken Kushner for all of his help during the trip with the headcounts and crowd control. He was a lifesaver! Tired and exhausted we began to reflect on our beautiful trip and the great

bond that we had built throughout our trip. We walked down to the shuttle with suitcases in tow, a bit heavier with all of the souvenirs for our loved ones... and ourselves. Walking at the front of the group, I hear behind me sounds of anticipation. “I can’t wait for next year’s trip, we’ll have to bring some more of our friends”, with this I began looking ahead to 2020! Pistachios from Aegina Island

The Fall Liners headed to sea for a three-island tour. Our third stop was Aegina, a Greek island some 16 miles south of Athens. It ekes out a meager economy from tourists and pistachios, which are world famous. Because our visit was brief, we chose to skip the formal tour and strolled around the main town. We ate pistachio ice cream, walked through the fish market and the shops, and took a slow look around.

At the end of the harbor was an amazing Greek Orthodox Church, Ekklisia Isodia Theotokou, (Church of the Blessed Virgin). Inside was dark and full of icons, paintings, lit candles and lamps, carpets and a few worshipers. There was a woman praying in some ritual with a bearded priest. It was all very evocative and a bit spooky. Outside the church was a small park with a very shabby old guy selling pistachios. I bought a few small bags. I had change back and I told him to keep it. Our small time pistachio entrepreneur was amazed and very excited with this outcome.

Aegina is about 30 miles from Hydra, another of our three islands. In 1970, I visited Hydra with my brother. In half a century, cell phones and vehicles are different, but the experience is essentially the same. Tourists tumble off ships, stick their toes in the Aegean Sea, take photos, and sail back to Athens. I brought my brother pistachios from the old vendor, a present for his 75th birthday. Memories last a lifetime.

FLSC ANNUAL MR. CHRIS NAST 3-HOUR KAYAK TRIP

Come out and enjoy a great day paddling on the

Great Egg Harbor River. We’ll end at the outfitters (where the cars are

parked), and relax on the patio, where food and “beverages of your choice” can be purchased. Come on out for a great time!

This trip will be cash-only, and pay on day of trip. Obviously, I will need an approximate head count about a week in advance to tell Palace Outfitters the number of boats we’ll be renting. It is never “too late to sign up”, but please either call or email me so that I can add you to the head count. Also, the trip does not sell out. There is no maximum number of boats. Please do not call me the morning of the trip and ask about river conditions or weather. I don’t know any more than you. If you are on the fence about coming, I cannot help you – decide for yourself. We have run before and gotten poured on mid-trip, so it can happen, but hopefully does not. We ALWAYS have fun!

Children (accompanied by an adult) are welcome. All rented boats will get a life preserver vest, although the depth of the river is usually only 3-4 feet in most areas.

Please pay the trip leader, not the staff of Palace Outfitters! Everyone must sign up with me, and also complete a Palace Outfitters waiver. You must sign up and pay ME so that I have a total headcount, and then at app. 9:30 AM, I go order and pay for the boats.

FALL LINE SKI CLUB BOOK CLUB MAY 6TH, 7:30 - THE TAPROOM 427 Crystal Lake Ave Haddonfield, NJ (Haddon Township) (Meet in the main restaurant by Fireplace)

The book for the month of May will be: The Nightingale: by Kristin Hanna

France, 1939 - In the quiet village of Carriveau, Vianne Mauriac says goodbye to her husband, Antoine, as he heads for the Front. She doesn’t believe that the Nazis will invade France...but invade they do, in droves of marching soldiers, in caravans of trucks and tanks, in planes that fill the skies and drop bombs upon the innocent. When France is overrun, Vianne is forced to take an enemy into her house, and suddenly her every move is watched; her life and her child’s life is at constant risk. Without food or money or hope, as danger escalates around her, she must make one terrible choice after another.

Vianne’s sister, Isabelle, is a rebellious eighteen-year-old girl, searching for purpose with all the reckless passion of youth. While thousands of Parisians march

into the unknown terrors of war, she meets the compelling and mysterious Gäetan, a partisan who believes the French can fight the Nazis from within France, and she falls in love as only the young can...completely. When he betrays her, Isabelle races headlong into danger and joins the Resistance, never looking back or giving a thought to the real--and deadly--consequences. Beaver Creek, Colorado JANUARY 18-25, 2020.

Join us in Beaver Creek, Colorado for fresh powder and chocolate chip cookies!

Beaver Creek is a beautiful resort in Vail Valley, covering 1,832 acres and 3,340 feet vertical and a summit that sits at 11,440 feet. It is also known for plates of chocolate chip cookies and spa treatments, but also has plenty of terrain for those who want to rip it up. Stone Creek was recently opened and has some of the hardest terrain in the resort, including glades and chutes. The Birds of Pray Express Lift and Grouse Mountain Express Lift also have some fun pitches and glades. If you or someone is just learning there are plenty of fun winding greens. Groomed cruisers are also prevalent throughout the park. Beaver Creek is nestled between 3 different village centers (Beaver Creek, Arrowhead, and Bachelor Gulch), creating a relaxed and luxurious European atmosphere.

We’ll be staying at Arrowhead Village Condos. Arrowhead is the western-most village of the Beaver Creek Village-to-Village ski experience. This intimate, charming village is centered around the base of the Arrow Bahn Express Lift. For those that don’t want to cook on vacation, the Broken Arrow Restaurant is available for breakfast, lunch and après ski, and the Vista Restaurant for lunch and dinner. We will also enjoy the pool, outdoor hot tub, and fire pit. There is also complimentary shuttle service to and from Beaver Creek daily.

For those who might want to undertake some other adventures, there is also available: tubing, sleigh ride dinners, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and 20 miles of Nordic track (These adventures will be at your own expense).

We will also be shuttling to one of the other towns one evening for an evening of fun!

The discount cost for this trip is $1,729(subject to change when air is finalized) and is applicable from the July 16th meeting through the August 20th meeting. Deposit $50 at the May 21st meeting to hold your spot.

TELLURIDE, COLORADO FEBRUARY 23-MARCH 1, 2020

When most people talk about Telluride, they're typically referring to this ski resort rather than the town. This massive complex boasts more than 2,000 acres of skiable terrain in the San Juan Mountains. The resort's 148 trails cater to skiers of all levels, although most slopes are best suited for experienced skiers. Recent visitors said that this is one of the best skiing areas in the country, citing its ample powder (more than 300 inches accumulate here annually) and less crowded atmosphere. A few reviewers also raved about the resort's restaurants, especially Altezza At The Peaks, Alpino Vino, Allred's Restaurant and Bon Vivant.

The Peaks Resort & Spa is a 4-star ski-in/ski-out resort. Make yourself at home in one of the 160 guestrooms featuring refrigerators and flat-screen televisions. After a day on the slopes, hand your skis to an attendant who will store your equipment over-night, then go dip into one of the 4 spa tubs, indoor & outdoor pool and indoor/outdoor pool slide.

The Town of Telluride, which is a short 30 minute shuttle from Montrose Airport features numerous restaurants, museums, shops, brewpubs, etc. From your hotel, visit the Mountain Village Core or take a Gondola ride down to town. There are so many things to do within easy walking distance or by the Galloping Goose free shuttle service in town.

Facts: 147 total ski trails, including 23% beginner, 36%

intermediate, and 41% advanced / expert 18 total lifts, including two high-speed gondolas,

seven high-speed quads, two triples, two doubles, two surface lifts, and one Magic Carpet for beginners, capable of transporting 21,186 skiers per hour

This is the ski vacation you have been dreaming about! Incredible skiing during the day. Equally enjoyable après & night life right in the evening. Telluride Mountain has a huge Après Ski party lined-up for us with a substantial bonus awarded to the club at a recent Fam Trip. Better “Hold My Spot” at the May 21st Members Meeting!

EPSC WINTER CARNIVAL FEBRUARY 8-15, 2020

So, you thought that Zermatt only existed in Switzerland. It turns out that there is a beautiful resort in Midway, Utah that was originally settled by Swiss immigrants who have imprinted their culture, architecture, food and, most important, abundant quantities of snow. Oh, and we are going there next February.

We’re skiing at 3 world-class resorts (actually 4, but Park City and Canyons became one HUGE resort in 2015), in addition to swanky Deer Valley and intimate Sundance (no word on whether or not Robert Redford will make an appearance).

Here are some of the amenities on this year’s Council trip:

Round trip air from Philadelphia to Salt Lake City Roundtrip airport motor coach transfers SLC/Zermatt Lodging at Zermatt for 7 nights including all taxes and

baggage handling Seven full breakfasts at Zermatt including all taxes Lift Tickets: 2 of 7-day Deer Valley, 1 day Sundance,

2 of 3-day Park City/Canyons with guided tours offered at each mountain. Substitute Park City 3rd day for Deer Valley 2nd day

for an additional cost of $20.00 Daily ski shuttle transportation supplemented and

customized for EPSC participants to mountains as designated in the ski

week schedule for FIVE days with the exception of Wednesday which is an open/off

day. For those interested in skiing Wednesday Zermatt will offer limited ski

shuttles. Sundance ski day includes special BBQ lunch and

optional historical walking tour with Max – your Zermatt rep. Welcome Party on Saturday Night with appetizer,

pasta bar and cash bar Orientation Breakfast on first Morning with resort reps Free Race Gate Practice Runs – Monday (day before

Storage Deer Valley: Deer Valley Resort is a “skiers only” resort located in

the historic mining town of Park City, Utah and is nestled in the Wasatch Mountains. It was host to the moguls, aerials, and slalom events during the 2002 Winter Olympics. There are 103 trails, 21 lifts, 3,000 feet of vertical and over 2,000 acres of skiing. Since snowboarders are not allowed at Deer Valley, provisions will be made for any boarders to ski additional days at Park City and Canyons. Sundance:

Sundance Resort (developed by Robert Redford) is set in a unique, small town atmosphere. The resort is set against a 12,000-foot Mount Timpanogos. The resort offers 42 runs spread out over 450 acres of skiable terrain. Experts will enjoy the steep, wide-open bowls while beginners and intermediates can stick to the groomed slopes. There are several restaurants and bars located at the resort, including the Bearclaw Cabin and the famous (or infamous) Owl Bar. Butch Cassidy’s Hole-In-The-Wall gang used to frequent there. A special BBQ lunch is included in a private facility at the base of the mountain. If you have never skied at Sundance, this will be a great experience for you to get a different “feel” from the resort than you get from the bigger ski areas. Park City/Canyons:

Park City/Canyons is home to over 7,300 skiable acres, 330 trails, 41 lifts, and over 3,200 feet of vertical. The two resorts are next-door to each other and are connected by a new gondola to make the resort the USA’s biggest linked ski area. Park City hosted the giant slalom events during the 2002 Winter Olympics.

These ski areas average over 350 inches of snow per year.

Zermatt Resort & Spa Our home for the week is the upscale, Swiss-themed

hotel in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains. It is 2 miles from the center of Midway, 5 miles from Soldier Hollow ski resort and 46 miles from Salt Lake City. Standard rooms feature elegant Swiss Alps-inspired decor, 2 queen-size beds, and come with flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi., microwave, and mini-fridge. Amenities include Z’s Chophouse, the Wildfire Smokehouse, a casual bar, and a bakery with specialties that run from decadent to extremely decadent. There's also an indoor/outdoor swim-through pool, a fitness center, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, and a spa.

Val Gardena, Italy w/Post-Trip Extension to Malta March 6 – 18, 2020

Val Gardena, Italy: A ski paradise for beginners and World Cup stars. Dolomites Val Gardena is a holiday destination for skiers who love diversity and would like to get to know a skiing area that offers beautiful slopes for World Cup stars looking for more of an athletic challenge. The Dolomites Val Gardena ski area is part of the Dolomiti Superski, a world-famous network of 12 ski areas in the Dolomites which you can access using just one ski pass. The Alpe di Siusi in the Dolomites Val Gardena skiing area and is a beloved starting point. From Selva Val Gardena, a picturesque village in Dolomites Val Gardena, you can also directly reach the Sellaronda skiing carousel which will provide you with an unforgettable skiing circuit on skis on the Sella massif. Malta: Megaliths, medieval dungeons and Calypso's Cave – The Maltese Islands are positively mythic. The narrow meandering streets of their towns and villages lead to the main square, which is invariably dominated by the huge baroque church. As the countryside is dotted with medieval towers, wayside chapels and the oldest known human structures in the world, the Islands have rightly been described as an open-air museum. The Maltese archipelago lies virtually at the centre of the Mediterranean, 93 km south of Sicily and 288 km north of Africa. The archipelago consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino with a total population of over 400,000 inhabitants occupying an area of 316 square kilometers. Malta is the largest island and the cultural, commercial and administrative centre. Gozo is the second largest island and is more rural, characterized by fishing, tourism, crafts and agriculture. Comino, the smallest of the trio, has one hotel and is largely uninhabited. With superbly sunny weather, attractive beaches, a thriving nightlife and 7,000 years of intriguing history, there is a great deal to see and do.
