The choices are many as there are some 40 groups and organizations plus Sunday School classes for youth and adults of all ages. • On August 17, Hannah Circle will go to Tim & Joe’s Restaurant, 6500 West Main Street, Belleville, at 11:30 am. Make reservations with Marilyn Linton.

Grief Support CornerBy now you all should be familiar with FUPC’s Grief Support Team and the significant amount of support our group facilitators have provided to those who have experienced the loss of a loved one. To quote from a note I just received from one of the participants: “Thank you so much for your time, kindness, care and concern shown to me during the Grief Share sessions. Your encouragement has truly blessed me!” Please express your gratitude to our facilitators the next time you see them: Amy Brummitt, Rick Farinas, Joyce and Dwight Lied, Abbey Croissant, and Bob Samples, and to Caryn Meder and Joy Baltz for their work “behind the scenes.”

Our next session will begin in December. We need time to re-focus our efforts, develop goals and milestones to grow this ministry, and to recruit new facilitators to replace those who are answering God’s call in other ways. If you feel the call to join us as a session facilitator or in another support role, please talk to any one of us to get more information. I can assure you the rewards you will receive from this ministry are beyond anything I can express in words. ~ John Mann, 624-3020, 558-5669, [email protected]

Presbyterian Community Preschool Please share with your family and friends that there are still openings in our Preschool! There are two classes for 4-year olds: Tuesday/Thursday and Wednesday/Friday. There are two classes for our 3-year olds: Monday/Wednesday/Friday and Tuesday/Thursday. Families can schedule a Meet and Greet with the teachers and visit the classrooms. For applications and more information, call the Preschool, 233-4809.

Transportation MinistryDo you need a ride to the 10:30 Sunday morning worship service? Do you need a ride to and from a doctor’s appointment? Or do you have another transportation need? First United has a team of drivers waiting to transport you! NOTE: New drivers are always welcome. For

Adult Discipleship

Adult Fellowship

Feasting on the Word Bible Study (Sundays)Join this group at 9:15 am on Sunday mornings in the Conference Room (200) as participants study different Bible passages.

Date Focus and ScriptureAugust 7 Trust vs Fear: Luke 12:32-40August 14 Preserving Faith: Hebrews 11:29-12:2 August 21 Straightening Out: Luke 13:10-17

NEW: Thoughtful Christian Gathering (Sundays)A new Bible study will kick off on August 28 in the Vista Room. The first one-week study is “Importance of Context.” Interpreting a biblical text out of its context can produce confusion and division among Christians. What are common errors, and what steps can we take to read the Bible in its most original context?

Pastor’s Classes (Sundays, 9:15 am, Vista Room, 206)• August  7:  Coffee Chat with  the Pastor Come spend an hour asking questions and chatting about whatever the group wants to discuss with the pastor. • August 14: FUPC 101 – What We Believe Great class for new people looking to learn more about our church. Also great for

long-time members looking for a refresher! This is the first in a three-week series. This week we will chat about what we believe about God, church, faith, etc. Explore what Presbyterian Christians believe and the basic faith teachings of our church.•  August  21:  FUPC 101  – Our Church’s Mission Another great class for new people exploring or long-time members getting better connected. This is the second in a three-week series. This week we will explain the particular goals and mission of our church as we are seeking to glorify God through our church’s worship and activities.• August 28: FUPC 101 – How to Get Connected New to the church or just looking to get better connected with the church? This week we will give you an overview of all the wonderful ministries of our church and then show you how we help each other get connected to activities, ministries and meaningful experiences within our church.

Parent Class (Sundays)The Parent Class will meet during August at 9:15 am in the Library (102). Grab a cup of coffee and join the class discussion led by Leah and Shawn Lankford. All parents and grandparents are welcome!

August 1: Friends Dine OutIf you enjoy an occasional dinner out, why not join this dinner group at a different restaurant every first Monday of the month. On August 1, we will meet at Longhorn Steak House, 6115 N. Illinois Street at 6:00 pm. For reservations or more information, call Marcia Mellone, 398-9895, or Betty Bucknell, 397-2114.

August 10: Faith in FictionThe book for August is Robert E. Lee: A Biography by Emory Thomas. The life of Robert E. Lee is the story - not of defeat but of triumph - in clearing his family name, in marrying properly, in his work as an engineer on the mighty Mississippi, in becoming the towering figure over all other military men and who commanded the Confederate army in the Civil War. The book for September is March by Geraldine Brooks. Come join us at 9:00 am, August 10, in FirstXpression (202). Contact Susy Rybicki if you need information, 792-9458.

August 12: Merry Mates Merry Mates will hold a regular meeting with dinner and program on Friday, August 12, at 6:00 pm, in Eversull Hall (104). The guest speaker for the evening will be Rachel Jackson, Executive Director of Project Compassion. For more information, contact Vicki McAdams, 405-227-8950.

August 24: Prayer Shawl KnittersWe meet on the 4th Wednesday of the month, any time after 9:00 am, at the home of Betty McRoberts. Come and join this wonderfully positive group and experience the joy and blessings that come with gifting these shawls. Want to learn to knit or crochet? Then come and we will teach you. Just want to see what

we are about? Then you are very welcome! Many churches are represented, so don’t hesitate to bring along friends or neighbors. Coffee and breakfast yummies will be ready. Chicks with Sticks is a great bunch – come and see! For information, call 791-1386.

New: Veterans Life GroupIf you are a veteran and would like to join a Life Group for Veterans, contact Shawn Lankford, 222-1641, or Ken Stange, 624-0406. They are tentatively planning a Veterans’ Day Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, November 12.

Ad o p t -A- H i g hway : On Saturday, June 25, seven met at 8:00 am and braved the heat to pick up trash along our 1.06 mile stretch of Highway 161. A little past 10:00 am, their mission was completed, and they piled their trash bags at the main entrance of First United for all to see on Sunday morning. Pictured are Chuck & Karen Thurig, Jean Morgan, Jim & Donna Nicholas and Lou Stark.

Cleaning AngelsThanks to the many cleaning angels who came on Saturday, July 16, to clean the Sanctuary. Under the inspirational leadership of Jackie and Dan Bainter, the windows, pews and carpeting were refreshed for worship! Many hands made the burden light. Please consider joining this enthusiastic group when the call comes out for fall cleaning of the Chapel and Sanctuary. ~ The Worship Committee

Ways to Serve and Give

Renovation Timeline to Be DeterminedThe church does not yet have a detailed renovation timeline, because we are currently being diligent in reviewing contracts and design decisions upfront. Once those details are set, we can put a schedule in place. Every effort will be made to create minimal inconvenience to our ministries and events. A general outline is given here:Window Replacement – This will be the first major project. It is important to complete the window work before renovation begins in those particular rooms. Delivery time for the window order is 6-12 weeks. Once the windows and their hardware are near delivery, the demolition of the existing window walls will begin. Therefore, it will be at least one month before the window project can begin.Kitchen Renovation – We are considering ways to accomplish the

kitchen renovations while waiting for the window delivery.Availability of a Certain Space – Without a specific renovation schedule, it is difficult to know about the availability of Eversull Hall, the Library, the Patio, the Kitchen, the Preschool rooms or rooms adjacent to those having windows replaced. If you have a concern about space for your group’s ministry needs or events, please let the Office know, and they will notify the trustees, Pastor Rob and the renovation team. We will do our best to accommodate all ministry needs during this process. And finally… As soon as we have the renovation schedule established, it will be available in the Church Office, sent by email to those on the e-Weekly list, and published in the next issue of the Steeple. Thank you. ~ Pastor Rob and the Renovation Team

August 13: Belleville Blessing BanquetHelp Beacon, Caritas, and Project Compassion, which all help our community. Attend the First Annual Blessing Belleville Banquet at 6:30 pm at Fischer’s Restaurant, Belleville. Along with dinner, there will be a silent auction and live music by Bailey Guinn. Tickets are $45, with sponsorship levels at $100, $250, and $500. The event is organized by Ally Dyer. Purchase tickets on Sunday mornings, at [email protected] or call 315-9659.

September 3: Fall PW/Helmsmen Rummage SaleGet ready – it’s coming: The 2016 fall rummage sale on Saturday, September 3, 8:00 am – 12:00 pm. Clean out closets and storage areas for clothing, shoes, old Christmas decorations, picture frames, books, and anything else that can be useful to those in need in our community. All donations must be clean, in good condition, and in good working order. As before, we will not pick up or accept large furniture items or TVs; these items are not in demand and too difficult to dispose of after the sale. Bring in items on August 25. Please place everything behind the screens at the back of the Gym. The Office Staff can arrange to unlock the Gym door as long as it is during regular office hours. For more information, contact John Mann, 624-3040, or Mary Jo Mordhorst, 397-4914. From  the  Jewelry  Ladies:  The Jewelry Ladies thank you for your past contributions and are gearing up to participate in the rummage sale on September 3. We welcome all contributions and will have a marked basket in Cornell Commons to donate jewelry. A workday is planned - watch for more information.

Sunday Coffee Hour HostsThank you to everyone who has hosted Sunday coffee hour in 2016. There are still several opportunities in the fall. It’s fine to keep things simple with only coffee and donut holes; there are instructions to order the donuts and you can be reimbursed. Please see if any of these dates work for you, your church group or ministry: September 4, 11; October 9; November 6, 20, 27; December 4. This time on Sundays is an important part of our fellowship at First United, and those who host do much to support that effort. Thank you all! ~ Faith Community Committee

Wednesday Youth MealsWow, summer went fast! It’s time to plan Wednesday youth meals. Pull out your calendar, check your Wednesday nights, and dust off your favorite recipes. Shop, prepare (at home or at church), help serve, and clean up. You could even order pizza! And… there is a great kitchen crew to help out! All groups or families are welcome. Questions? Call or text Jess Mokriakow, 910-3738, or email [email protected].

Campbell Soup Labels: Program EndingIn the past few years, participation in Labels for Education (LFE) has declined. As a result, Campbell has come to the very difficult decision to wind down the LFE program. Please turn in all labels by October 1 to the container near the Royal Heights Road Chapel entrance. This final collection of labels will be delivered to Kindercottage to redeem for school supplies. Presbyterian Women thank all who have generously contributed labels!

Area Prayer Shawl Gathering and TeaThere was an excellent turnout at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Belleville on June 22, with 65 women and several men. Pastor Rob gave the invocation and welcome. It was a gym of chatting, happy ladies, beautiful examples of hand work, prayers, and from the First United group… delectable tea nibbles.

Both houses and the current office need renovations; volunteers are needed to complete the work. Look for a signup table in Cornell Commons to help with the project.

September 17: 3rd Annual International Mission Festival The Mission Festival is held to bring overseas’ mission programs to the attention of members and our surrounding community. Tastes from Around the World will begin at 5:30 pm and will include a free meal. Many great food dishes, representing twelve international mission countries we support, will be served. A slide show of international music, featuring the sights and sounds from these foreign countries, will entertain during dinner. A variety of international crafts will also be for sale. We do need your help for this to be a success. Mark your calendar, plan to attend, and bring a guest. To learn more, contact Mission Committee members, Chuck Thurig, 277- 8493, Andy Morgan or Dwight Leid, or contact Faith Community Committee members, Mary Teague, 235-6728, or Martha Dexheimer.

September 17: Tastes from Around the WorldWe need your help with the International Mission Festival! Once again, Faith Community is excited to help the Mission Committee highlight the work done by FUPC mission co-workers in many countries. Letters are being sent to the various groups and ministries, asking them to consider hosting a table for a particular mission country. Beginning August 14, look for a table in Cornell Commons to sign up or for more information. Once a group has chosen their country, they can then create their own menu (recipes can be available) and decide how best to represent their country’s cuisine. This is a wonderful opportunity for First United to come together in food and fellowship while celebrating the remarkable mission work sponsored by our church community! ~ Faith Community Committee

October 23 through 29: Adult Mission TripThe Adult Mission Trip will visit Kemmerer Village in Assumption, Illinois, about a two-hour drive from our church. KV is close enough that you can come for the day, if you cannot stay the entire week. Possible projects are: replace the roof on a single-story cottage; indoor painting in several buildings; lay noodle board over drywall in several bathrooms; install 500 feet of wooden fence. If you are interested, please mark these dates on your calendar and talk to Andy Morgan, [email protected], Dwight Lied or Chuck Thurig.

Meet a Mission Worker Cindy Corell is another of the 13 mission co-worker teams supported by your Mission Committee. Cindy has been based in Port au Prince, Haiti since 2013 serving as the Presbyterian Hunger Program/Joining Hands companionship facilitator, connecting presbyteries and churches in the United States with a network of churches, grassroots groups, and nongovernmental organizations in Haiti. Around the world the Joining Hands network strives to alleviate poverty and suffering through community education, advocacy, alternative economic activities, lifestyle changes,

and spiritual grounding. The goal is to restore the wholeness of God‘s creation and the healing of the human family through prayer, mutual visits, humble accompaniment, repentance, and mutual transformation.

In 2010, when she made her first trip to Haiti, Cindy sensed a heartfelt connection with this Caribbean country and its people. “I learned that everything I’d ever accomplished in 48 years of living had prepared me for being in that land of beautiful people,” she says. “I was forever changed, and I could no longer be satisfied in an ordinary job and only finding fulfilling and meaningful work on the side.” Cindy left a 27-year career as a journalist to accept a mission appointment in Haiti. Having traveled to Haiti and having co-chaired a Virginia-based nonprofit organization that funds educational endeavors in that country, she knows any ministry there is fraught with challenges and frustrations. When facing difficult situations, Cindy is confident that family, colleagues, friends, and supporters will stand with her. She realizes that progress will come slowly, and she vows to “rejoice in triumphs, however small.” Cindy says she hopes her work with people in Haiti and the United States will result in transformed lives in both countries. “I want people to feel comfortable asking questions, even tough questions, about why life in Haiti has been so hard, especially for farmers in what was once such a verdant land.” To read more about Cindy, visit her website at http://tinyurl.com/jgjskcy

Visit the Mission CommitteeThe Mission Committee meets in the Conference Room (200) at 6:30 pm on the fourth Wednesday from January through October and on the third Wednesday in November and December. Our meetings are open to all. Come visit us!
