    4 FALL IMPROVEMENTS, September 2013

September means school is back insession. But its August when cars, packed to the gills,

with bicycles strapped to the roof, clog the nations high-ways. Its the annual migration to college.

I approached my sons decision to drive his truckacross the country from Lakeville, CT, to Prescott Col-lege in Prescott, AZ, with an air of trepidation alongwith a desire to go along for the ride.

Jack was game but told me, Mom, this is not going tobe an epic Jack Kerouac adventure. We just need to getthere.

    Tara Kelly joins, once again,

    the great cross-country drive

He also told me, Mom, I hope you realize, Imnot staying in a hotel.

Thats fine, I said. You can sleep in the truck inthe parking lot.

We would be three: Jack, his classmate EmmaBornstein and me in a 2005 Toyota Tacoma, witha bench seat, manual shift and a cap on the truckbed.

College kids have strange priorities for whatthey need in their lives. Years ago, I traveled to col-lege with 10 of my favorite houseplants. For Jack, itwas an iron forge, an extra set of wheel rims, and,of course, all of his camping and rock-climbinggear. The back of the truck was fast filling up andhe hadnt packed his bike yet.

An hour before our scheduled departure weemptied and repacked the truck, leaving behind

the wheel rims and a funky high school projecthed been determined to finish. Jack and Emmaspent a last few minutes rifling through my CDcollection; Lucinda Williams, Johnny Cash, RyCooder and Bruce Springsteen would all make thetrip with us.

I took the drivers seat for the first leg of the trip.Pulling out of the driveway I noticed the gas

gauge read empty. I rolled my eyes. Good start,

I thought. Once fueled up we got underway. Theplan was to drive due west to Chicago, where Jackssister, McCullough, is living. We were bringingher boxes of books and a cast iron pot too heavy toship. We thought we would make it to Ohio beforewe stopped for the night.

When I was in college, my roommate and Idecided to drive back to school, across the country. Her parents, who lived in Albuquerque, NM, were

giving us some furniture for our apartment inNew York. We rented a U-Haul van for our trip andher mother came along for the ride. The U-Haul broke down just outside the Albuquer-que city limits and was replaced with an 18-footbox truck.

It was enormous. We encountered a few other bumps in the road

but we made it to Texas. The way I remember it, my friendwas driving, and as she maneuvered this behemoth, she gotit wedged under the flat roof of a roadside truck stop.We managed to disengage the truck without bringing

the building down, but we looked at each other and had to

admit, we were out of our depth and the furniture wasntworth it. We turned the truck around, drove back to Albu-querque and flew home.

Now, some 30 years later, I was looking forward to com-pleting the trip across the country. Jack and Emma weredelightful traveling companions. And there was humor bythe roadside. We passed an official sign that read, Buckle

Your Seat Belt for the Next Million Miles! All went smoothly as we trekked along Route 80 in Penn-

sylvania, sharing the road with hundreds of semis and notmuch else. We stopped for the night in DuBois, Ohio, Jackand Emma agreeing to sleep in the hotel, instead of outsideit.

The only problem was that the bench seat was extremelyuncomfortable for the person sitting in the middle as theyhad to swing their legs far to the right out of the way of thegearshift. Two hours in what amounted to a twisted yogaposition was the limit.

    FALL IMPROVEMENTS, September 2013 7

Jack and Emma were encouraging me to stay in Chicagoand visit McCullough and let them continue alone. But itturned out that Emma didnt know how to drive a manualshift car. No problem. Jack would give her a lesson or two inthe parking lots along the way.We debated this as we passed by the cornfields of Ohio

and we debated it as we passed by the cornfields of Indiana. It wasnt just the discomfort of three people in a truck thatcomfortably held two. The truth was, Mom was slowing

them up. They really did just want to drive straight through, pulling over at rest stops for a quick nap if needed. Momsdesire for a decent dinner and a soft bed did not appeal tothem at all.

When we got to Chicago I gave Emma a lesson. She wasgrace under pressure as she repeatedly stalled the truck try-ing to shift into first in the middle of rush hour traffic. Butshe improved and I could see that Jack was going to prevail.

Once again, my cross-country odyssey was short-circuited.

Id made it from New Mexico to Texas and Connecticut toIllinois. I just have to finish that middle leg.

And Jack and Emma got to Prescott in record time, textingme at rest stops: 138 miles from Saint Louis, doing great;120 miles from Amarillo, Texas, making good time; 120miles from AZ border.

He didnt text me when he arrived, it was nearly midnight, and he was, I imagine, exhausted. But he called the nextmorning.

Weekends filled with football, brisk foliage walks and nights by the fireplace would beincomplete without a fresh, autumn beer, and to help makesome educated picks for fall flavors this season, it wouldbe in order to consult an expert like Cornwall PackageStore owner Richard Bramley to find out whats beenbrewing.

There are a lot of Octoberfests, fall pumpkin beersand a lot of things that would be spiced or seasoned withthings you would expect in the fall things like allspiceand pumpkin pie, Bramley says of this autumns seasonalbrews, which are popping up everywhere. There are somany autumn ales and Octoberfests coming out, in fact, that there are just too many to list.

come an internationally recognized brand. Some other re-gional breweries that make popular autumn beers includeShipyard, Harpoon, Blue Moon, Magic Hat, Otter Creek andNew Belgium Brewing.

I think autumn beers have a wide range of tastes. Theywere made for the fall festivals the harvest festivals.Theyre a little more flavorful than the summer beers,Bramley says.

Bramley notes that if you avoid autumn beers becauseyou think theyre too rich or heavy, you should think twice.Autumn beers and Octoberfests are often surprisingly light.

These beers are not really that big and heavy. Theyre justa little bigger than the summer beers some of which are

just a step above water. Octoberfests are not really massivebombs in your stomach.

Bramley has owned the Cornwall Package Store for 35years, and he has always celebrated having 99 Brands ofBeer on the Wall. Stocking that many beers was no smallfeat in the 1970s, but these days, there are hundreds ofbrands competing for space. Bramley says the store nowprobably stocks 200 different kinds of beer, many of whichare regional products from New England breweries.

Most microbreweries that have come along in the last 10or 15 years make some form of a fall beer, just as they makea summer beer and a holiday or winter beer, Bramley said.Sometimes its more than four seasons and there will beeight or 10 different seasonal products. Getting a taste forall the different flavors and nuances is no small feat, but itsworth a try.

The Cornwall Package store features a Beer of the Week/Wine of the Week (BOW-WOW) program for regular cus-

tomers, offering six different bottles of wine or a six-packof assorted beers at the package price. The deal is perfectfor patrons who wish to sample a mixed selection of differ-ent products all in one purchase. On any given week thisautumn, beer drinkers might find six different fall beers orOctoberfests in one pack, giving them the opportunity todevelop their taste buds and pick out a favorite. If you dontfind the beer youre looking for, Bramley can always order

your preferred brand.Bramley is the Cornwall Package Stores third owner, and

notes the shop is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.He offers wine cellar consultation, local delivery and com-puter tracking of wine purchases. He is also happy to recom-mend some of his favorite wines and beers.

The Cornwall Package Store is located at the corner ofRoutes 7 and 4 in Cornwall Bridge, and is a favorite spot forlocals, fishermen, campers and weekenders. Call 860-672-6645for information, or visit www.cornwallpackagestore.com.

For the hidebound and reactionary, the day after Labor Day is the time to put away the seersuckersuit, the poplins, the lightweight Madras jackets, the spectatorshoes, and the electric socks.

Fall is in the air, school is back in session, politicians are aboutto start wheedling for the November elections. A man needssome gravitas, and that means tweed jackets.

As the ancient Greek proverb states, A hairy jacket warms arobust mind; pass the butter.

The weather doesnt always coordinate with the calendar, so Ikeep the poplin suits on call well into October. Same with thingslike shorts and polo shirts.

But the truly warm-weather stuff goes into stor-age, and out come tweed jackets, worsted suits withfull jacket linings, odd vests, medium-weight sweat-

ers, wool ties, wool socks and sturdy shoes be-cause you never know when youll have to trampacross a windblown field, and you dont want tolook like a yutz.

The fun of the increasingly cool climate for theclothing fan is the opportunity to start mixing upelements.

Example: For the highly embarrassing photoshoot for this story, I assembled three combinations.

The first, and marginally most formal, is a moder-ately hirsute charcoal tweed jacket combined withsmooth elements a white pinpoint shirt, a silk tieand pocket square, and worsted light gray slacks;gray socks, and cordovan monk straps I foundthrifting for $15. (I cant help boasting about that.)

The jacket is half-lined a thin sweater could beadded for warmth.

So although most of the pieces are on the smoothside, the centerpiece is clearly the jacket.

The next attempt uses the same trousers, a brown,plain-toe blucher shoe, a blue pinpoint shirt withsilk tie, plain white linen pocket square, a tattersall

vest, and a doeskin blazer which is extraordinarilywarm.

The interplay here isnt in texture so much as inpatterns two solids refereeing a small riot be-tween the stripes of the tie and the squares of the

vest. The white pocket square helps bring the thing

back down to earth. The final look is casual a decidedly hairy tweed

jacket (green), a tattersall oxford cloth shirt with abuttondown collar and no tie, ordinary chinos, andrough-grained brown split-toe shoes.

Dark orange socks and a muted yellow pocketsquare perfect the colors of the season, assumingsomebody takes an interest in your feet. p

    Fall Improvements, sb 2013 13

I remember, with a sharpness thatstill makes my cheeks burn, the time my 2004 Pontiac GrandPrix ran out of gas on the I-84 entrance ramp in Newtown.

The situation couldnt have been more predictable: The gasgauge didnt work (the needle either remained fixed on full,or it flipped between full and empty like a metronome), andsince I had run out of babysitting money earlier in the week,it had probably been at least 10 days since Id filled the tank.

I realized afterward that I had fallen into a pattern of ir-rational thinking when it came to the Grand Prix, a firm butuntested belief that I could will the car to do whatever I need-ed it to do. I could drive for miles and miles, and nothing badwould happen. The car was a refuge from the strip malls andchain restaurants of the suburbs, an assurance that I could getup and leave whenever I wanted.

But on the shoulder of the entrance ramp that hot after-noon in late May or June, with my thighs sticking to theleather seat because the air conditioner also didnt work, thatteenage faith was broken. So I did the only thing I could do:I cried. I cried loudly and lustily and in at least two octaves, like a Greek professional mourner or a child lost in a super-market. I cried so much that the armed state trooper who

came to my rescue offered me a menthol cough drop and avery tentative hug.

I was 16 when that happened, still an acceptable age forunreasonable bouts of tears. From then on, I imagined adult-hood as the time beyond crying about car trouble. But evennow legally, emotionally, and financially an adult I stillcry. I cry when the power shuts off unexpectedly in my Volvo, which happens about twice a year (the Grand Prix was soldsix months ago to a Pontiac buff who enjoys resuscitating

defunct cars). I cry when I need new brake pads, even if Iveknown for months that they have to be replaced. I cry whenthe check engine light goes on. (I am somewhat proud to say, however, that I only well up when I run out of windshieldwiper fluid.)

In a society that frowns upon profuse public displays ofemotion, I feel more than a little humiliated when, red-eyedand hiccuping, I subject the mechanic to an incoherent and

theatrical account of what went wrong. After I leave the autoshop, the self-flagellation begins: Why do you always have to

have a meltdown when something happens to your car? Didyou even check to make sure you didnt have mascara all overyour face before you appeared in public? Where the hell isyour dignity?

But, in moments of clarity, I resist the idea that my automo-tive boo-hoos are a sign that Im not a competent grown-up.Its just a little hang-up that periodically becomes a big hang-up, a fact as trivial to me and boring to others as my enthusi-asm for cilantro. And maybe its not all that illogical, either:I rely so heavily on my car that even minor malfunctionscan leave me hamstrung. So this fall, I intend to learn how tochange my own oil, check my own fluids, and replace my ownbulbs. And then, depending on how all that goes, Ill tacklesomething more complicated, like installing my own brakepads. I will become the weepiest do-it-yourself mechanic thatever lived.

Yes, its time to think about buttoning upthe house and winterizing the yard, doing somethingabout the drip from the water pipe in the basement, call-

ing the repairman for the over-energetic front burner onthe kitchen range, painting the house trim.

But not just yet.Im dreaming of fitting in another trip somewhere.

Like the one we just took to Ottawa in Ontario, Canadascapital city of 900,000.

We drove to the city from the southwest (havingcrossed the border near Watertown, NY, at the ThousandIslands) at about 4 p.m. on a Thursday. If you go youll

need a passport. Our hotel was at the west end of RideauStreet. We were on Wellington Street and traffic wasvery slow. The right lane didnt have as many cars in it,so I took the right lane. Until a driver in a pickup truckrolled down his window and yelled, Thats the bus lane.

Yup. Signs said there was a $250 fine for driving in thebus lane. I got out of the bus lane.

Secured in our hotel, we ventured to Byward Market,a combination of open-air and enclosed shops and ven-

dors of everything from jewelry to fresh blueberries toObama cookies. You see, Canada was the first foreigncountry our leader visited after he took office. And prac-tically the first thing he ate if you believe the Cana-dian legend is a shortbread cookie decorated with ared maple leaf, from Le Moulin de Provence. DaughterDarcie acquired one of said cookies and I had a bite.Good taste, Mr. President.

The next day we walked (we walked everywhere, as thecar was cocooned several stories below ground, reachedby the steepest garage ramp I want to drive in a while) tothe National Gallery of Canada. Before I talk about theinside art, Ill talk about the outside art. Ottawa is full ofpublic art. At the National Gallery there are silhouettedsteel horses and a giant cast spider it looks like some-thing out of Day of the Triffids.

Near the Rideau Canal there are murals painted on staircasefaces. If you look at them from a certain vantage, they form aunified picture of children at a beach. As you get closer, theyshift sideways like venetian blinds.

The National Gallery has a respectable overview of aborigi-nal and Canadian and European art. Donna particularly likedthe large exhibit of Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven.

Looking at a Thomson up close, she said, you could see howhe created his shapes and colors. She could see things thatarent apparent in reproductions. Darcie liked the modern art.I enjoyed George Segals Gas Station, the American artistsrecreation with plaster figures, Coca-Cola machine, woodencrates, tires and the like. You know, a gas station.

Outdoors again, we passed the Royal Canadian Mint, butdidnt go in. At the time of our trip, the American dollar wasa few cents to the good over the Canadian, so why shake our

luck? We wanted to go to the Canadian Museum of Civiliza-tion, which is across the Ottawa River in Gatineau, Quebec.Theres probably a local bus that goes there. But the guide atthe provincial info office at Byward (named for Lt. Col. JohnBy of the Royal Engineers, who directed construction of theRideau Canal) said we could walk over the bridge. My travel-ing companions agreed.

Theyre not afraid of heights. They walked leisurely over the Pont Alexandra. I loped.

Museum of Civilization is a lot of fun. Its multi-cultural, itsfunky, its family friendly. I discovered that Bert, the SesameStreet fellow, really came from Northwest Territory. I swearits his face on the wall in the enormous gallery of native to-tem poles.

We went through the gallery of time called Canada Hall.It tells the stories of immigrants, of topography, of growth.Theres been some controversy of late in Canada; somesuggest the museum doesnt do enough to boast about theachievement of famous white male folks. (Theyve gotten anew War Museum, but that apparently isnt enough.)

Did you think we were going to walk back over that bridge?Nope. We took the water taxi, a 10-minute ride from the Mu-seum of Civilization to the landing near the Rideau Canal.Theres a museum about the canal, which goes from the Ot-tawa River to the Rideau River and ultimately to Lake Ontarioand the city of Kingston.

Darcie thought it would be fun to take the Haunted Walk ofOttawa, which we did Friday evening. It started at 8 p.m. Ourguide wove us through this park, around that construction site, along that city street, relating several stories that seemed most-ly to be about untimely deaths and suppositions about ghostly

visitations. He left us at about 9:30 near the National War Me-morial and said we had time to catch the Mosaika. Mosaika is asound and light show projected onto the face of the Parliamentbuildings. It is bright and bold and chest-thumpingly proud ofCanadian heritage. I took photos, but only a video would do it

justice.Street crossings are interesting in Canadian cities. Pedestri-

ans are absolutely respectful of the signals. No jaywalking asin Boston.

The coinage is interesting. They still have nickels, dimes andquarters, but no penny coins. Figures are rounded up or down.Only $1 and $2 coins, Loonies and Toonies. And the 20-dollarbills are mostly plastic. (Dont leave them in your clothes when

you put your laundry in a dryer, warned Darcie, theyll melt.)We went to a downtown Chapters bookstore. I couldnt fig-

ure out why, at 8:30 at night, there were more than a hundredpeople there, in a serpentine line. They were waiting to have acopy of Omens (Women of the Otherworld series) by KelleyArmstrong signed by the author. Id have gotten in line, had Ibeen a fan of young adult werewolf fantasy fiction. (I did graba couple of British police novels, though, editions that haventbeen rewritten for Americans who cant understand British.)

My most memorable meal was at the Highlander Pub onRideau Street. I ordered bangers and mash. It came with abig dollop of colcannon in a whiskey-imbued sauce and applewedges. I was skeptical about the colcannon, until I took a bite.

Yum. According to our waitress, it was mashed carrots, turnipand cabbage plus cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar. With a

half-pint of Caledonia 80, a Scottish ale, a fine meal.Day of departure we walked to Chinatown on Somerset

Street. We visited a Chinese grocer, and a more dazzling arrayof colors Ive never seen. Packages were easily identifiable. IfI couldnt read the Chinese characters (of course I couldnt), Imight make out the French. But the photograph would do the

job. That ended our Ottawa adventure. Those autumn chores? Id rather visit Canada. p
