INTERCULTURAL STORYTELLING FESTIVAL – WEST SIDE STORIES

The Pierrefonds-Roxboro Borough is proud to join the Montreal Intercultural Storytelling Festival for its 15th edition!

The Montreal Intercultural Storytelling Festival is the largest of its kind in Canada. It is now renowned throughout the French-speaking world —and beyond— for being one of the leading actors in oral history.

Since its first edition in 1993, the Festival has been providing the public with the opportunity to attend countless shows starring storytellers from both near and far. They come to share the roots of their culture and those of our own. This intercultural blending is conveyed to the audience through the words and colours of storytelling.

Ma grand-mère avait des doigts de sorcière FR Catherine Pierloz | Belgium[6+]Portrait of a grandmother, frightening yet kind, nurturing matriarch, in our disobedience of whom we would round the cape of childhood. At the beginning, there was childhood followed by grandmother’s house. In grandmother’s shadow, doors we couldn't open. And behind those doors, the bewitching gyrations of wild birds. Catherine Pierloz playfully shares memories of her childhood and treats us to liberal renditions of some traditional tales.Saturday, October 19, 10:30 a.m. Pierrefonds Library

One Métis Man’s Life Growing Up in SaskatchewanBruce Sinclair | CanadaBruce Sinclair grew up Métis in Northern Saskatchewan in a small town mostly populated by indigenous people. In this moving and sometimes funny performance he tells stories of a childhood marked by questions of identity, poverty, family relationships, discrimination and racism, but also by the indomitable spirit of his people. The Métis are sometimes referred to as “the forgotten people”, but Bruce prefers to call them “otipemisiwak”, “the people that own themselves”. The story is also a testimony of Bruce’s transformation into the knowledge of his Nêhiyaw (Cree) background which had previously been unknown to him.Sunday, October 20, 3 p.m. Pierrefonds Library

Cité Babel FR Rachid Bouali | FranceIn the 1960s, postwar France is in dire need of labourers. In the north, between Roubaix and Hem, a huge block of flats is erected to house the working population, most from an immigrant background. In no time, demand outstrips the tower block’s capacity and, in 1974, the neighbourhood of La Lionderie is built. It’s still there, and so are its inhabitants… It is where Rachid Bouali grew up. He still has vivid memories, and dreams about it. Weaving together anecdotes of everyday life and the collective imagination, tall tales and urban legends, Cité Babel is the story of La Lionderie and its inhabitants: their shared fate, their sacrifices, their dreams.Thursday, October 24, 7 p.m.Pierrefonds Library

INTERCULTURAL STORYTELLING FESTIVAL

Magabre et le cochon volant FR Olivier de Robert | France[6+]Magabre is a funny old chap who always gets the girls and boys dancing with his bramble-covered violin. Thanks mostly to the brambles… Listen to his story and you will find out why you must always have donuts in your pockets instead of books, and how a flying pig once saved the citadel of Carcassonne!Friday, October 25, 9:30 a.m. Pierrefonds Library

The Keys to the KingdomMarta Singh | Canada[5+]A full hour of power-packed storytelling, from action rhymes for the young and not so young, to ghost tales for the bold and not so bold. Grandparents and parents who come unaccompanied by their kids and grandkids will leave not just with The Keys to the Kingdom, but with a treasure trove of stories to share when they get home.Saturday, October 26, 3:30 p.m.Roxboro Library

Cassandre FR Catherine Pierloz | Belgium

Who remembers Cassandra, the accursed prophetess? She who heard the cries of war when nothing but a heavy, silent wind troubled the grasses. When cities did not yet exist. When there was nothing but sand and stone. And the Gods. In this play, Catherine Pierloz explores the music of words in which the poetic traces of myth shimmer, and brings to life a tragic figure from antiquity, a woman whose prophecies were mocked, ignored –and discovered, too late, to be true.Saturday, October 26, 7:30 p.m. Pierrefonds Cultural Centre

EXHIBITION

The Black ForestWorks by Anna Jane McIntyre • MAI – Montréal, arts interculturels[10+]In The Black Forest, Anna Jane McIntyre presents a multimedia installation which examines memory and human nature through an abstract soundscape, a dark forest and a surreal hunter’s cabin. You are invited to wander through this adumbral world scattered with fractured texts, strange symbols and the dream imagery of myriad cultures.

About the artistThe works of McIntyre explore the ways in which people see themselves, how they create their own sense of identity, and how behaviour affects the evolution or stagnation of these ideas. An evolving visual amalgam of British, Trinidanian and Canadian culture. From October 15 to November 30 (please see page 24 for opening hours)Exhibition Hall, Pierrefonds Cultural Centre Free This exhibition is financially supported by the Conseil des arts de Montréal touring program.

ORCHESTRE MÉTROPOLITAIN

Karina Gauvin and Les Illuminations Orchestre Métropolitain • Karina Gauvin, soprano • Nicholas Carter, conductorFollowing the success of his previous visit, conductor Nicholas Carter is back with another dazzling program. Elgar claimed that the rivers and the rolling hills, the mountains and the azure of the Mediterranean not only inspired his work on In The South (Alassio), but practically wrote it for him. In Britten’s Illuminations, set to the poems of Arthur Rimbaud, the voice of Karina Gauvin is at its most expressive, capturing all the ambiguity and euphoria of this melodic cycle. And finally, Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5, a masterpiece of orchestral eloquence that remains one of his most uplifting and accessible works.

You can also relive the magic of the orchestra’s first European tour at the screening of Ensemble on Thursday, December 5, 7 p.m., at the Pierrefonds Library. See page 13 for details.
