REINCARNATION: HAVE WE LIVED BEFORE?Plato, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Edison are three of many famous people in history who believed in reincarnation. Were they right? The philosophical and historical basis for the concept of reincarnation will be presented and discussed. What is origin of concept?, What is the soul?; What is the nature of reality? In addition, the evidence for reincarnation will be examined. Finally, methods for the possible recall of past lives will be explored.
Kevin Creegan, Ph.D.Wednesdays, September 5, 12 | 1-2:30 p.m.Swartz Center for Spiritual Life, Room B
THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE Military history buffs are well familiar with the circumstances and outcome of the Battle of the Bulge (16 December 1944 to 23 January 1945). Most can describe the main events that took place over the month long-battle, and the more famous examples of the battle, but, arguably, the most significant combat action happened late in the afternoon of the first day, in and around the tiny hamlet of Lutzkampen. The author will discuss the actions of a lone U.S. antitank crew stopping an attacking German column of tanks and how this saved what was left of the 106th Division. Join us as we relive history.
James Dougher, Jr.Thursday, September 13 | 2-3 p.m.Swartz Center for Spiritual Life, Room C
SCRANTON’S FORGOTTEN CIVIL WAR HERO: THE LIFE AND LETTERS OF EZRA GRIFFINThis class will describe how, through a stroke of luck, the author obtained a large lot of original Civil War era letters and diaries. These documents are significant, since they open a window into the life and times of Lt. Ezra S. Griffin, a native of North Scranton, who died of wounds received at the battle that took place in 1864, in Petersburg, Virginia. Griffin’s observations on everyday military life, and his emotional accounts of the realities of war, are combined with his unusual perspective of life back home in Scranton during wartime.
Nick Petula, AuthorTuesday, September 18 | 2-3 p.m.Swartz Center for Spiritual Life, Room B
ELIZABETH I AND THE IRISH PIRATE QUEEN In 1593, a remarkable meeting took place between Queen Elizabeth I of England and Granuaile, or Grace O’Malley, known as the Irish pirate queen. This class will look at the documents and historical record of the meeting and then discuss how O’Malley’s image altered over the centuries in response to changing Irish politics.
