Aquatic Specialty ProgramsGoldfish Program is for participants who need more individualized attention and practice time and has 4-to-1 ratio class. The class uses equipment appropriate for students needing extra support and assistance. Class instructors are trained Adaptive Aquatics instructors with experience working with and teaching mainstream, semi-private, and private classes for individuals with special needs.

Masters Swim Team Masters swimming is an adult competitive league that practices several times a week. Contact Kristine Gilson, Head Coach at [email protected] if you are interested in joining (cost is per month).

Youth Swim Team Our youth swim team practices Tuesday-Saturday and is divided up based on age group. Swimmers compete against other YMCA teams in the chicagoland area. For tryouts contact Amy Goodwin, Head Swim Coach at [email protected].

Private Swim Lessons This is for participants who only want to sign up for a package of five 30 minute private lessons. A private lesson is one instructor with one participant. Please fill out a private lesson request for upon registering for any private lessons. Private lesson request forms should be turned into the front desk and someone will contact you to set up the date and instructor.

Semi-Private Swim Lessons This is for participants who only want to sign up for a single 30 minute semi-private lesson. A semi-private lesson is one instructor with two or three participants. Please fill out a private lesson request for upon registering for any private lessons. Private lesson request forms should be turned into the front desk and someone will contact you to set up the date and instructor.

Synchronized Swimming Synchronized swimming challenges the creativity of swimmers by combining the movements of dance with swimming skills. Students work to improve stroke, form and endurance while gaining confidence and poise. Swimmers may participate in performances and competitions. Prerequisite: Fish level or above.

Water Polo Classes Played with two nets and a ball, water polo is the oldest Olympic sport! The class will teach the skills, rules, and techniques of water polo. Water polo is a great way to stay fit while having fun in the water. Participants must be Guppy level or higher.

Level 3: Stroke Improvement If you've been swimming forever, but aren't sure if you are swimming correctly, this is the class for you. We will help you improve your strokes' effectiveness and become a more efficient swimmer.

Group Parent/Child Swim LessonsShrimp, Kipper, Inia, & Perch Levels

This YMCA program provides the highest quality of early water experiences for children age 6-36 months. Four levels of progression will see your child through water adjustment and onto basic skills. Program instruction is directed toward helping you work with your child. Each child is always accompanied by one parent. Classes maybe combined based on enrollment.

Level 4: Perch Age: 24-36 months. Program instruction in this class is directed toward helping parents to work with their child to feel more comfortable in the water and to develop basic water safety and swim skills. Each child should always be accompanied by one parent.

Level 1: Pike with Parent Is your child just not ready to be alone for swim lessons? This is a transitional class in which we will wean your child away from mom and dad. The next level from here would be Pike. Your child must be 3-years old during the session. Family membership is required to receive member rate.

Preschool Aquatic Programs(Age: 3-5)

This program offers children their first experience in the water without a parent. Children are taught basic skills that are the building blocks of swimming, including: water propulsion, floating, body awareness and independence. They are also taught some general aquatic safety and pool games. Children will be taught with and without the use of various IFD's (instructional flotation devices). Classes maybe combined based on enrollment.

Level 1: Pike The first level of lessons is for beginning swimmers. Swimmers should be able to listen to instructions and follow directions. Swimmers will learn the basic paddle stroke on the front, back and sides. They will also be taught kicking skills and putting their face in the water.

Level 2: Eel Swimmers will learn to jump in without assistance, float on their front and back for 20 seconds with or without an IFD. Swimmers will also learn to paddle on front, back and side for 25 yards with an IFD and 15 feet without.

Prerequisites: To enter this level, swimmers should be able to front and back float 20 seconds with an IFD. Swimmers should also paddle on their front, back and side for 10 yards with an IFD, and 5 feet without.

Level 3: Ray In this class swimmers will learn to front and back float 30 seconds without an IFD; front alternating paddle with rhythmic breathing 25 yards with an IFD, and 20 feet without. Swimmers will also learn front symmetrical paddle with rhythmic breathing 25 yards with an IFD, and 20 feet without; do a side alternating paddle for 25 yards with an IFD and 20 feet without; back alternating paddle for 25 yards with an IFD and 20 feet without; and back symmetrical paddle for 25 yards with an IFD and 20 feet without.

Prerequisites: To enter this level, swimmers should be able to jump in without assistance, float on their front and back for 20 seconds with or without an IFD. Swimmers should also paddle on front, back and side for 25 yards with an IFD and 15 feet without.

Youth Aquatic Programs(Age: 6-12)

This program follows the YMCA of the USA's guidelines to swim lessons. There is a focus on five main points: personal growth, personal safety, stroke development, water sports & games, and rescue. Classes maybe combined based on enrollment.

Level 1: Polliwog This is the beginning level for school age children and is appropriate for anyone new to the water or with little formal instruction. Children will learn the basic paddle stroke on their front, back and sides, kicking skills and will become comfortable putting their face in the water.

Level 2: Guppy In this class swimmers will learn to front and back float 1-minute; front alternating paddle 25 yards with rhythmic breathing with and without an IFD; front symmetrical paddle 25 yards; back symmetrical paddle 25 yards; back alternating paddle 25 yards; side alternating paddle 25 yards; and kneeling dive.

Prerequisites: To enter this level, children should be able to front and back float for 30 seconds with or without an IFD; paddle 25 yards on their front, back and side with an IFD, and 15 feet without an IFD; jump in without assistance; be comfortable in deep water.

Level 3: Minnow In this class swimmers will learn to do a standing dive; basic front crawl rotary breathing 25 yards; basic breaststroke 25 yards; backstroke 25 yards; elementary backstroke 25 yards; basic sidestroke 25 yards; and tread water 1 minute.

Prerequisites: To enter this level, children should be able to front and back float 1-minute; front alternating paddle 25 yards with rhythmic breathing with and without an IFD; front symmetrical paddle 25 yards; back symmetrical paddle 25 yards; back alternating paddle 25 yards; side alternating paddle 25 yards; and kneeling dive.

Level 4: Fish In this class swimmers will learn to tread water for 3-minutes; swim 50 yards front crawl; swim 50 yards breaststroke with legal kick and arm pulls; swim 50 yards backstroke; swim 50 yards elementary backstroke with a glide; swim 50 yards sidestroke with a scissors kick; and swim 15 yards butterfly.

Prerequisites: To enter this level, children should be able to do a standing dive; basic front crawl rotary breathing 25 yards; basic breaststroke 25 yards; backstroke 25 yards; elementary backstroke 25 yards; basic sidestroke 25 yards; and tread water 1 minute.

Level 5: Flying Fish In this class swimmers will learn to do a flip turn; swim 100 yards front crawl with bilateral breathing; swim 100 yards breaststroke; swim 100 yards backstroke; swim 100 yards elementary backstroke; swim 100 yards sidestroke alternating sides; swim 100 yards lifesaving sidestroke; and swim 15 yards butterfly.

Prerequisites: To enter this level, children should be able to tread water for 3-minutes; swim 50 yards front crawl; swim 50 yards breaststroke with legal kick and arm pulls; swim 50 yards backstroke; swim 50 yards elementary backstroke with a glide; swim 50 yards sidestroke with a scissors kick; and swim 15 yards butterfly.

Level 6: Shark In this class swimmers will learn to take their own heart rate; learn about open water and backyard pool safety; swim 100 yards from crawl with flip turns; swim 100 yards breaststroke with pull-out; swim 50 yards inverted breaststroke; swim 100 yards backstroke with dolphin kick and pullout; swim 50 yards over arm side stroke; swim 25 yards butterfly with streamline; and swim 200 yards individual medley.

Prerequisites: To enter this level, children should be able to do a flip turn; swim 100 yards front crawl with bilateral breathing; swim 100 yards breaststroke; swim 100 yards backstroke; swim 100 yards elementary backstroke; swim 100 yards sidestroke alternating sides; swim 100 yards lifesaving sidestroke; and swim 15 yards butterfly.
