T he biggest news I have to share with you this issue is our new partnership with MD Anderson Cancer Center,

to form the Summit Medical Group MD Anderson Cancer Center.  The partner-ship brings MD Anderson’s world-renowned cancer care to patients in northern New Jersey and marks the first time it has part-nered with a physician-owned and -governed multispecialty group.

Summit Medical Group MD Anderson Cancer Center patients have access to enhanced cancer treatment, including MD Anderson’s cutting-edge treatment protocols, clinical trials, and research. Already in place at our Diamond Hill Road campus in Berkeley Heights and with a new 130,000 state-of-the-art outpatient cancer treatment center under development in Florham Park,

this level of expertise offers patients the opportunity to stay closer to home and receive their treatment in a convenient and comfortable setting.

State-of-the-Art Cancer Center T he Summit Medical Group (SMG)

MD Anderson Cancer Center will offer leading, multidisciplinary

oncology services covering all aspects of care from routine screenings to diagnos-tics, treatment, and surgery, as well as survivorship. The 130,000-square-foot building will be located at 150 Park Avenue on the Green at Florham Park and is expected to open in early 2018.

“Having a fully integrated health care delivery system located under one roof prevents gaps in timely and effective cancer care. When patients receive a diagnosis, they do not have to get a referral, go to another building, or travel over the river for care. They are immedi-ately fast-tracked for an appointment with a specialist in the same building and often on the same day,” says Brian Natale, CPP, vice president of operations and security at SMG.

For the first time at SMG, the new cancer center will offer world-class interventional radiology services, which are needed to treat nearly half of all cancers today. The radiation oncology suite will be designed to accommodate three cutting-edge linear

accelerators (LINACs)—high-energy X-ray machines that use beams of radiation to pinpoint and destroy tumors. A separate chemotherapy infusion suite with a picturesque view will offer a sooth-ing environment for patients receiving treatment.

The four-floor facility will house 60 providers in various oncology specialties, including breast care and gynecology, as well as 240 additional support staff members. Test results, which are easily accessible to all SMG providers through the centralized electronic medical record, will allow for more comprehensive care and reduce the need for redundant services.

Patients will transition seamlessly to other departments after their doctor’s visits. A state-of-the-art imaging suite will have rapid appointments for routine screenings, such as mammo-grams, as well as diagnostic tests,

including MRI and CT scans. Individuals who need blood drawn will be seen right away in the on-site oncology laboratory.

Developed by the Rockefeller Group, the building will feature an open floor plan with a glass exterior that lets in natural sunlight. Reflection rooms will offer quiet private spaces for patients, families, caregivers, and staff. The Learning Center and Education Library will be a valuable resource for patients to learn more about diagnosis and treatment options.

MD Anderson Cancer Center have joined together to form the

Summit Medical Group MD Anderson Cancer Center, bringing innovative, world-class cancer services to patients in northern New Jersey and the tristate area. The collabo-ration is the first of its kind between MD Anderson, one of the world’s cancer care leaders, and a multispecialty physician group.

“With MD Anderson and SMG now working together, patients have local access to the expertise of one of the leading cancer centers in the world,” says Jeffrey D. Le Benger, MD, chairman and chief executive officer of SMG.“Our patients will continue to experience the comprehensive care that is the hallmark of SMG, but now will benefit from our enhanced access to innovative cancer treatments, clinical trials, and tumor boards. By bringing this level of expertise into the community, patients can stay closer to home and in a convenient and comfortable setting during one of the most difficult times in their lives.”

Cancer services, which include surgical oncology, medical oncology, infusion therapy, and diagnostic imaging, are already in place at SMG’s flagship campus at 1 Diamond Hill Road in Berkeley Heights. Radiation oncology will be in place in early 2017 at the Berkeley Heights campus. All cancer care will move to the new center when it opens in early 2018.

Dedicated solely to oncology, the new 130,000-square-foot facility in Florham Park will build on SMG’s existing services by offering radiation therapy, palliative care, genomic testing, and clinical trials. Support services, including nurse navigators, who guide patients through their individual cancer experience, will also be expanded.

SMG cancer specialists are credentialed as MD Anderson Cancer Network physicians and follow the institution’s world-renowned treatment protocols.

“This collaboration is not just a branding—it is a full integration with MD Anderson offering world-class, evidence-based cancer care,” says William T. DeRosa, DO, FACP, chief of oncology services at the Summit Medical Group MD Anderson Cancer Center. “When patients come to us with a diagnosis, our approach and treatment plans will reflect MD Anderson’s standard of care. There will be constant connectivity between the two campuses.”

Transform Cancer Care in New Jersey Toby Cohen: A Grateful Patient Story

When a diagnosis of breast cancer blindsided Toby Cohen last year, the physicians, navigators, and nurses at the Summit Medical Group (SMG) Breast Care Center quickly became an extension of her family. From detecting the cancer during a routine mammogram to surgically removing the tumor, administering chemotherapy, and reconstructing her breast, the 67-year-old says the staff collaborated seamlessly.

“SMG feels like home to me,” she says. “Everyone is so empathic and knowledgeable. They guide you through everything and make you feel like it is going to be all right.”

Since exceptional care was available in her neighborhood, Cohen was able to maintain a sense of normalcy while receiving treatment. She continued working as a teacher and visited her grandchildren regularly. It also saved her time and energy to have the laboratory, doctor’s office, and chemotherapy suite located in the same place.

“Our second opinion in New York City agreed entirely with SMG’s plan. There was no reason to leave home when I could receive the same quality treatment 10 minutes away,” Cohen says. “I tell anyone dealing with cancer to see my oncologist at SMG—and now, with the MD Anderson partnership, even more resources will be available.”

With the resources of a fully integrated health system and unified electronic medical health records, patients will receive seamless care under one roof from diagnosis to treatment and throughout survivorship. Says Dr. Le Benger: “Our philosophy is to not just treat the cancer, but to take care of the entire patient.”

Patients who already have relationships with primary care physicians and specialists, and those who may now face a diagnosis of cancer, can stay within the comforts and resources of the SMG facility. New patients will be paired with doctors who will care for them from diagnosis through survivorship, all with the perspective and knowledge of their individual cancer history.

“MD Anderson pioneered the multidisciplinary or team approach to cancer care. Having many specialists at the table talking through each patient’s care plan, sharing expertise, and considering possible new options, is our signature care. SMG is a strong, integrated practice where a patient can get everything he or she needs from primary to specialized care, and now, that includes innovative, research-based cancer care,” says Margaret Row, MD, MBA, vice president, operations of the MD Anderson Cancer Network.

Patients will also have access to more robust research. “As we learn more about cancer on the molecular level, we are on the cusp of learning how to manipulate people’s individual immune systems to fight cancer,” Dr. DeRosa explains. “Through this new partnership, we can hear firsthand about the most promising clinical and basic research findings in Houston and beyond.”

MD Anderson is one of the world’s largest and most respected centers devoted exclusively to cancer care, research, education, and prevention. Nearly one million patients have sought care at the Houston campus since it opened 75 years ago. For the past 26 years, it has ranked as one of the top two cancer treatment centers in the United States.

The new Summit Medical Group MD Anderson Cancer Center logo was unveiled at Summit Medical Group’s flagship campus at 1 Diamond Hill Road in Berkeley

Heights on Aug. 2, 2016. The visual identity of this exciting new partnership is featured on exterior monument signs at the street entrances as well as throughout the campus on interior signage, and on provider lab coats, business cards, and statio-nery. The new branding is also present at SMG’s Morristown oncology offices. 

Branding for the partnership will continue to roll out, and a new website is in development. Cancer services—which include medical oncology, infusion therapy, and diagnostic imaging—are already in place at SMG’s flagship campus in Berkeley Heights. All cancer care will move to the new center in Florham Park when it opens in early 2018.

The partnership brings MD Anderson’s world-renowned cancer care to patients in northern New Jersey. It offers leading, multidisciplinary oncology services covering all aspects of care from routine screenings and diagnostics, to treatment and surgery, to survivorship.
