    Fall 2016 Commencement is tonight

    ACES SLEIGH - The University Police Departments bright-red Hummer featuring ACE the Eagle was the hit of the 32nd Annual Texarkana Christmas Parade Tuesday evening in downtown Texarkana. The children enjoyed interacting with ACE and the UPD team throughout the evening. More than 100 lighted entries were featured in this years parade, which was themed Letters to Santa.

    Texas A&M University-Texarkana will celebrate its fall 2016 commencement ceremo-ny today at 6:30 p.m. at the Perot Theatre in historic downtown Texarkana, Texas.

    A total of 265 students from August and December 2016 will receive masters and baccalaureate degrees. Approximately 200 students are expected to participate in the ceremony.

    Dr. Emily Cutrer, President, and Dr. Gary Stading, Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, will present the candidates and confer the masters and baccalau-reate degrees.

    Dr. Bill McHenry, Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, will present academic hoods to recipients of masters degrees.

    We are starting to look at years of service for our Employee Celebration in January. If you feel you should be receiving a milestone award for 2016, please contact Ayla Baldwin in Human Resources at Ayla.Baldwin@tamut.edu. We dont want to miss anyone! Please remember, we do not count part-time service, so it will not be included in the years of service calculations.

    Eligible creative-writing or research papers must: investigate this years PLACE theme of race and ethnicity, receive completion during the summer or fall semesters of 2016 or the

    spring semester of 2017, and receive review from an A&M- Texarkana professor inside of or outside of

    a class.

    Undergraduate and graduate papers must: range between 1,250 and 1,750 words (excluding references), and citenofewerthanfivesources.

    Creative-writing submissions must take the following forms: short stories (1,250-1,750 words), chapbooks (15-20 poems), or scripts (1,250-1,750 words).

  • Ophthalmic Assistant/Optician 15 Week Training CourseThis 15 week (80 hours) Ophthalmic Assistant/Optician Workforce Training course prepares students with the necessary skills to perform ophthalmic procedures in the office of an Ophthalmologist or Optometrist.

    Skills taught include: ocular anatomy and physiology, conducting visual testing, reading patient prescriptions on specialized equipment, glaucoma testing, principals of fitting and adjusting eyeglasses and contact lenses, general medical knowledge, including medical histories optical instrument maintenance, and skills to assist the doctor in patient care.

    Students will complete 60 hours of classroom and 20 hours of clinical instruction under the supervision of the course instructor or a designated employee at the Texarkana, TX clinical facility.

    Taught by a local Therapeutic Optometrist/Glaucoma Specialist, the 20 hour clinical portion of the course will be completed at a designated Texarkana Eye Associates location in the Texarkana area. Students must successfully pass an end-of-course exam to earn a Certificate of Completion from TAMU Texarkana and be eligible to sit for the JCAHPO Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) exam.Student liability insurance and course materials are included in price of course. Materials will be distributed the first day of the class.
