COALITION NEWS A PUBLICATION OF THE RELIGIOUS COALITION FOR EMERGENCY HUMAN NEEDS IN FREDERICK COUNTY Thank you for your generous support to our critical community ministry and for answering our call when we reached out! In May we learned that the air conditioning and heating system at the Alan P. Linton, Jr., Emergency Shelter needed to be replaced at a cost of $72,000. We knew this was an urgent need for when guests are with us in both the hot and cold months. With such a considerable unexpected expense that would impact our budget greatly, we reached out to our supportive community with a campaign to raise these funds. We were humbled by the outpouring of support we received that allowed us to complete the replacement from the funds raised. The new system was installed earlier this month; just in time for the last bit of extreme summer heat and ready for the upcoming cold months. The new system is much more energy efficient, so we are looking forward to reduced energy costs, which will impact our operating budget for months (maybe years!) ahead. Thank you for special support that helped us continue to operate a comfortable shelter for our homeless guests that God has entrusted into our care. This marks the third Coalition facility that has been named in honor of Alan P. Linton, Jr. who died in the Sept. 11 attacks. The Emergency Shelter and Client Assistance Center are the other two.

If you have the desire to give at this level, please contact Rev. Brian Scott at [email protected]

2016 SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE SERVES 1,398 STUDENTSFrom The Rev. Dr. Barbara Kershner-Daniel, Evangelical Reformed UCCUP

DATE

:

“FOR THE SEVENTH YEAR, the Religious Coalition along with CASS and other partners in the community provided leadership for the distribution of school supplies to Frederick City students.

This year we were blessed again by thousands of donated items through the United Way’s Stuff the Bus campaign. We continue to use financial donations to purchase backpacks and additional items that are on school lists but which we do not promise to have: graph paper, dividers, multiple colored highlighters, and thumb drives, but are necessary for students.

Over 200 volunteers were part of this year’s drive! This is the double the amount we had last year. Volunteers came from Evangelical Reformed UCC, Frederick Presbyterian, The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints, Congregation Kol Ami of Frederick, Calvary United Methodist, SHIP, the Temple School, the Rotary Club of Carroll Creek, and many from other faith groups and the community.

This project is an incredible testimony to the power of schools, the faith community, and businesses to do great things – together.”

MESSAGEFROMOUR ANNUAL school supply drive held each August marks the end of the Summer and the beginning of Fall. I would like to thank Pastor Barbara Kershner- Daniel for her work on this year’s Frederick City School Supply Drive, the Frederick County Bar Association and other community groups that provided the much needed resources for being able to provide over 1,300 needy children with school supplies. The event, not only provides backpacks, pencils, notebooks and other supplies, it provides each child with an opportunity to receive a quality education by having the supplies they need to learn and possibly break out of the poverty that impacts so many of their families.

As we enter into the last few months of the year, our thoughts and prayers continue to be focused on those in need in the community and how we need to serve them. I hope you will join us in being part of how we can make difference in the lives of so many these next few months.

WE INVITE YOU TO “BE AN ANGEL” with our new Adopt a Night Angel Campaign for the Alan P. Linton Jr Emergency Shelter. This is a great way for you to show you care about homelessness and to make a difference in a homeless person’s life, one night at a time.

ON FRIDAY DECEMBER 2ND we will host a complimentary holiday showing of “It’s a Wonderful Life” at

the Weinberg Center in downtown Frederick. This production reflects a biblical theme of the importance of each life and what a difference each person makes in our community, similar to how we think of our donors and volunteers.

In Phillipians 1:3 the Apostle Paul says “ I thank God for every remembrance of you “. I also thank the Lord for your prayers, your commitment to the work we do in our community.

With God’s blessing every day,

Rev. Brian J. Scott
