BANNED BOOKS: CHAPTER 2
STUDENT VOICES
On October 1, 2015, students, faculty and staff gathered in
front of the IVC Library to celebrate our second annual
Banned Books Week. This event, co-hosted with the English
Department, focused on Young Adult literature.
Librarian Celina Lee created a whimsical “Caught with
Banned Books” social media campaign on the IVC Library’s
new Pinterest, Twitter, and Facebook pages complete with
mug shots of the perpetrators. She also created a collection
of our Young Adult literature to highlight this year’s theme.
During the event, English instructors Virginia Shank, Lisa
Alvarez, and Kurt Meyer invited their students to read key
passages from Young Adult and other banned books authors.
This fun filled day emphasized the importance of defending
the freedom to read and to cherish the liberties that we
enjoy.

EMIGDIO VASQUEZ MURAL RE-DEDICATION
In the B300 building a masterpiece lay largely forgotten. A faded canvas with worn colors like distant
memories from a bygone era hung in the entrance as students and faculty passed by year after year, day
after day.
Through the diligent teamwork of the Vasquez family, IVC Administration, Facilities, and Faculty,
Emigdio Vasquez’s mural La Educación y El Trabajo was restored. Higgy Vasquez, Emigdio’s son,
tirelessly worked to save his father’s mural on site in the B300 building. With the support of
President Glenn Roquemore, the mural was carefully transported to its current home at the Library.
A re-dedication event on the afternoon of September 24, 2015 was held inside
the IVC Library so that students, as well as faculty and community members
could celebrate the unveiling of an important part of IVC history. The Vasquez
family and members of the Chicano community attended to share the cultural
history behind Emigdio’s work. After the unveiling of the mural of its new
location on the Library’s second floor, attendees enjoyed a lively reception
complete with a Mariachi band and Mexican delicacies were served.
It is a great honor for the Library to host a small part of Orange County’s
Chicano History for many years to come. We thank the Vasquez family for their
contribution.
We created a webpage to commemorate the festivities, take a peek:
