Nancy Bongiorno ’84 says, "I haveso many memories but I think that

Mrs. Campbell figures so prominentlyin so many of them for the Class of‘84. We were the first kindergarten

class and she was our teacher. As wegrew, so did she and she became thePrincipal for many, many years. Our

class was great. So many people thatstill see each other, so many that stilltalk to each other and still others thatmy children go to school with. Oh and

hot dog day, who could forget that!Loved it!!"

Susan Riley Marvin ’75 says "St. Cornelius was a foundation I will always cherish. It taughtmany things about my faith, and it was nice to be able to share this faith with my classmates. It created special bonds for me that will always be strong. We had our reunion a few monthsago, and so many were able to attend. We walked the halls of St. Cornelius, and it broughtback so many wonderful memories of teachers and friends! It was as if no time had passed. We knew we always had a special class where everyone got along. Mrs. Campbell was my

1st grade teacher, and she was at our reunion. She made 1st grade fun, and helped meenjoy learning. The class of '75 was truly a gift to me.”

With your help, St. Cornelius School once again was awarded first prize of $25,000 in the PepsiCo DreamMachine Recycle Rally! Those funds were used to purchase iPads and other “green” supplies as required bycontest rules. Bravo! Congratulations!

Many of you also supported last year’s $250,000 “Raise the Difference Campaign“ which enabled the schoolto pay down its debt.

In addition, St. Cornelius School was blessed to be one of the beneficiaries of a bequest from the estate ofMary Ann Straley, a long-time parishioner of St. Cornelius. How wonderful!

Many school supplies were purchased through the Box Top and Campbell Soup Label Programs. We’re grateful you helped with thisongoing project.

Students of St. Cornelius take an active role in raising funds throughout the school year. The monies raised are usedto further select initiatives within the school community but, more broadly, these student initiatives benefit thoseless fortunate in our local and global communities. Each Fall, our students participate in and raise funds through theirparticipation in a run-a-thon on the school grounds. The funds raised through the run-a-thon help offset expensesassociated with the school's sports program. Featured at this year's run-a-thon are Mary (Shanley) Cummins ’48 andher grandson Owen, a current 4 year old preschooler at St. Cornelius (pictured). Owen is the son of Patrick ’90,nephew of Tony ’87 and Marie ‘86.

Where Are They Now?Former St. Cornelius Faculty members seem to form a special bond with St. Cornelius. In this issue, our“Where Are They Now?” feature recognizes that bond and celebrates some special teachers. Althoughretired after years of teaching at St. Cornelius, they’ve returned to assist our school in variouscapacities. Whether they are drawn to serve children once again, or our parish community, or the spiritof our school, these devoted women have returned because they developed a fondness for St. CorneliusSchool and were happy to be part of Catholic Education. Once a part of St. Cornelius, always a part. Itseems our retirees never really retired. We are grateful to them for all they do for us.

Mrs. Marge CampbellMrs. Campbell was hired fresh out of Mundelein College at St. Cornelius in 1967 as a 1st grade teacher. From 1967 until1981, she taught a variety of grades including kindergarten (opening the kindergarten in 1975), 1st, 2nd, and 4th, as well as7th grade CCD. In 1981, she was hired by Fr. Matlak as the first lay Principal following a long history of having BVMsisters as Principal. Mrs. Campbell enjoyed a 29 year tenure as Principal until her retirement in 2010. Throughout thoseyears, Mrs. Campbell developed a great love for St. Cornelius Parish and School. In her opinion, her theme of “DreamsCome True at St. Cornelius” became a reality. Much of Mrs. Campbell’s time since retirement has been spent in care-givingto her late sister Barbara and her late brother, Fr. Feller. She is also a Minister of Care at her home parish, Mary Seat ofWisdom in Park Ridge. Since retirement, Mrs. Campbell has maintained her connection with St. Cornelius as the AlumniDevelopment Coordinator. Mrs. Campbell thoroughly enjoys keeping up with the many people she met during her yearsincluding former students, parents, parishioners, and faculty. In addition, she and her husband Tom spend many happymoments with their friends, nieces and nephews and their families (too many to even count). The younger generation keepsthem young at heart and attempts to keep them up to date with social media.

Mrs. Linda ChristianMrs. Christian, a 1963 graduate of St. Cornelius, taught 3rd grade from 2006 to 2014, which she loved because the kidswere so curious and eager to learn. She also was moderator of the Student Council for many years and has joined the St.Cornelius Alumni Association Board. She has been actively involved in the SPRED program (Special ReligiousDevelopment) at Our Lady of Victory for the past 20 years as a helper catechist, activity catechist, and Parish chairperson. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her 11 grandchildren, the youngest born this year on her birthday, March31. She and her husband took a three-week trip out west to the National Parks.

Mrs. Pauline CordellMrs. Cordell found it hard to summarize over 50 years of teaching in just a few sentences. She says, “I've found that everyyear is a new beginning and each student is unique.” Her teaching career at St. Cornelius began in September 1982 whenshe was hired by Mrs. Campbell for an 8th grade homeroom and as a 7th and 8th grade Math teacher. Through the years, she taught 6th, 7th and 8th grade classes. She retired from full-time teaching in June 2009 but was hired immediately aspart-time Art teacher. For Mrs. Cordell, this was a “dream job” that she still enjoys today. She writes that her Art projectsare fun and sometimes messy and the kids are great. In her "spare" time, she teaches Art and Environment for anotherparish church, she loves to read and, in the summer, she enjoys working outside. She says her home life is just as crazy as italways has been. She’s the matriarch of a family of seven stepchildren and their spouses, 17 grandchildren, and 12 greatgrandchildren. And she emphasizes the word “great.”

Class of 1975 ReunionOn November 8, 2014, the Class of 1975 gathered on campus for an early celebration of its 40 th class reunion. Turnout was high and all who gathered enjoyeda reception in the school building as they reminisced through the halls, shared stories of their days as students and caught up on their lives since St. Cornelius.Following their reception, many from the class joined a benefit in Pacocha Center tosupport current 8th grader, Jessica Colucci, who is battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Itwas a seamless tie-in for the reunion class to join with supporters of a current studentduring her time of need. After a few class members picked up some of the benefit’sraffle winnings, members carried their party forward to Paterno’s for more merriment.Don’t miss the quote from 1975 class member, Susan Riley Marvin, featured in thenewsletter.

He was hired rightout of Northeastern Illinois University in 1970 as a 4th grade homeroom teacher where he served for 45 years!
