LEADERSHIP LETTEROne in 17 children in Tulsa County is involved in a child abuse investigation. Wow! This number is startling but true. The silver lining is that CAN and its partner agencies are here to help those children. This past fiscal year proved to be another successful one in helping the many children looking for hope for a brighter future.

The Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) built in 1992 was originally intended to serve 40 children a month. Each year the numbers of children have steadily increased; we have served on average 50 children a week for the past three years. The need for the CAC’s services continues to grow and the staff continues to provide top quality services for these children.

Successes to highlight in 2014-2015 are:

• 2nd Annual CAN Superhero Challenge attendance grew from 250 people the first year to 700+ this year!

• 624 Kitchen & Catering Grand Opening, Suture’s Golf Tournament, IREM Fashion Show and other community sponsored events raised nearly $50,000 for CAN.

• The Tulsa Area United Way’s Day of Caring brought 200+ volunteers from QuikTrip to CAN’s campus and made an amazing transformation.

• For Fiscal Year 2015 (July 1, 2014 - June 30, 2015), CAN provided 3,705 services to 2,424 children from 19 counties in Oklahoma.

• CAN kicked off our campus expansion capital campaign, currently we have reached 30% of our overall fundraising goal.

I want to congratulate last year’s Board President, Adrienne Barnett, on paving the way for another successful year for CAN. I hope to continue that momentum and encourage the Board members to join me in positioning CAN for growth! The 2015-2016 fiscal year is off to a great start! As incoming Board President, I am honored to be a part of such an energetic and driven organization.

I’d like to share a little about myself.

4th of July• How I first learned about CAN: I became friends with Barbara after

meeting her at the Summit Club• My vision for CAN and what I would like to accomplish this year:

My goal is to serve as a resource to strengthen the collaboration, expertise and depth of our very talented group of staff and board members in our quest to serve the children in our community. I also want to see us advance our success on the capital campaign and work to finalize our plans on the renovated campus.

2015 ANNUAL RECEPTION

CAN’s annual appreciation reception on June 25 honored volunteers, donors, staff and CAN Board of Directors for their dedication and devotion to the children served at the Children’s Advocacy Center. Attendees celebrated a year of successes and kicked off a new year full of opportunities.

The highlight of the annual reception was the presentation of the CAN Distinguished Service Award. This award honors the commitment and dedication of an individual, group of individuals or organization that has made a significant contribution to the mission of CAN. This year’s award was presented to Justin Thompson of Justin Thompson Restaurant Group for his continuous support of CAN. Each year Justin finds creative ways to donate to CAN. In true Justin form, he arrived at the reception with a donation (from him and his employees) - a flat-screen TV/DVD player, 36 DVD movies and 22 stuffed animals. Justin is truly a gift to this organization.

TULSA COUNTY DIRECTOR OF CRIMES AGAINST CHILDREN RECEIVES STATE AWARDOn Thursday, July 23, Tulsa County Assistant District Attorney Sarah McAmis was awarded the Mitch Sperry Award for Oklahoma’s Outstanding Prosecutor of the Year at the annual Oklahoma District Attorney Conference. The award is named in honor of Mitch Sperry, a District Attorney who died while in office. His daughter, Haley Sperry, who is also an Assistant District Attorney (ADA) in Tulsa County, presented the award to Sarah. “It was incredibly humbling and such an honor to receive the award from Haley,” Sarah said. As Tulsa County’s Director of Crimes Against Children, Sarah spends time working with the multidisciplinary team at the Children’s Advocacy Center - law enforcement, child welfare workers, forensic interviewers, and medical professionals. In over 21 years as a prosecutor, Sarah has tried more than 150 jury trials and knows she is doing all that she can do to help make Tulsa County a safer place for children. Sarah was born and raised in Tulsa and received her Bachelor of Science from the Univeristy of Kansas and her Juris Doctorate from the University of Oklahoma College of Law. She worked as an Oklahoma Assistant Attorney General and as an ADA from Lincoln, Pottawatomie and Oklahoma Counties before coming to work in Tulsa. “There is absolutely no greater sense of accomplishment than to know that someone who hurt a child is held accountable and that he or she will not be able to hurt any more children. The best part of my job is when I know that a child is safe and that he or she has been heard,” Sarah said.

More than $250,000 was raised on April 25 at the 4th Annual CANdlelight Ball. Attendees were enchanted with the choir performance by Voices of Unity and Tulsa Children’s Chorus and enjoyed an exciting program led by Lynn Hernandez. The Historic Mayo Hotel once again provided the perfect setting for an amazing evening.

Special thanks to all of the supporters and volunteers who made this event an astounding success and to 2015 Honorary Chair, Tim Harris, whose words inspired attendees to light the way and make a

difference.

Funds raised for the CANdlelight Ball help CAN continue to provide a unique “one-stop” child-friendly facility where children involved in an abuse allegation receive the necessary services needed to begin healing. By supporting this event, supporters are investing in hope for a better and brighter future for Tulsa’s abused children.

SUPERHEROES ARE EVERYWHEREWe were so excited last March 29 to have more than 700 Superheroes join us at POSTOAK Lodge & Retreat to put their super powers to the test! The 2nd Annual CAN Superhero Challenge, with presenting sponsors QuikTrip and D&L Oil Tools, was an awesome success raising $64,000 to help CAN reduce the trauma that a child abuse investigation can pose for a child.

We would like to thank the 2015 Co-Chairs, Marnie Phelps and Leslie Croteau, and all of the committee members and volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this event a day to remember. A special thank you to the students at Monte Cassino who showed their generosity by donating back the award winnings they received from winning the 2015 School Challenge. Children (and adults!) enjoyed not only a SUPER obstacle course but also snow cones, face painting, yoga, arts and crafts, sponsor booths and more.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: St. John Medical Center Labor & Delivery NursesBeginning in August 2014, the Labor & Delivery nurses from St. John Medical Center began fundraising and collecting items for CAN. Lori Martin came to CAN with the first donation on Sept. 3, 2014, and it included boxes of various school supplies that they collected during the month of August.In December, they made their next donation that included several items from the CAN wish list and additional supplies to be used at the Children’s Advocacy Center. CAN received well over 500 items from the wonderful nurses of St. John Medical Center. On June 2, Brandi Moore was invited to the Medical Center to accept a sweet handmade card signed by many of the nurses that helped gather items and money throughout the year. Lori Martin and Brenda Duensing presented a check that represented the funds that were collected from a coin drive they held. CAN is overjoyed with

the generous donations and support of the St. John Medical Center nurses. What an incredible gift! Thank you! Little note about St. John Medical Center: It received the Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Magnet designation is nationally recognized as the gold standard in nursing excellence. St. John Medical Center is the first and only Magnet-designated facility in northeast Oklahoma.
