Le PeTiT ConservaToire

Le Petit Conservatoire est le nouveau

programme d’éveil musical en

français pour les jeunes enfants

offert conjointement par l’Association

canadienne-française de Regina et le

Conservatory of Performing Arts de

Le Petit Conservatoire is a new program

that invites parents and children to

French language. It is offered jointly by the

French-Canadian Association of Regina

and the Conservatory of Performing Arts,

University of Regina, with support from

the Department of Canadian Heritage. Structured around the Orff and Kodály concepts, the program teaches both French and music through the use of singing, pulse and rhythm. An authentic and positive musical experience that will be a valuable tool for years to come!

Les PeTiTes souris (groupe 18 mos-2 ½ ans)

The LiTTLe miCe (age 18 months-2 ½ years)

At birth, a baby’s hearing is better developed than its vision, which is why light-hearted songs and nursery rhymes are so important in the first months of life. This class uses rhymes, body movement, and small percussion instruments to encourage the child’s growing awareness of the space around them and promote the development of fine motor skills.

Day: Jeu (Thu), 18 sep-20 nov ET Jeu (Thu), 15 jan-26 mar (no class 19 fev) Time: 11h00-11h45 Course Fee: $240

Scottish piping and drumming is a unique and culturally rich musical style performed around the world. You DO NOT need to be Scottish to participate! Students learn both solo and band skills, while working as a team to improve the band.

The program’s goal is to help young players reach their musical potential in a supportive and fun learning environment. Instruction in bagpipes and snare and tenor/bass drums is based on Scotland’s Piping and Drumming Qualifications Board guidelines and on the long experience of the teaching staff in

individual instruction

Learning to play an instrument is one of

the greatest gifts you can give yourself

or your child. The Conservatory of

Performing Arts has been offering high

quality music instruction in Regina for

100 years. From voice to violin, music

lessons teach more than just tunes.

hiGh QuaLiTy insTruCTion

Our instructors are among the best in the

country. Many hold university degrees

and perform with the Regina Symphony

Orchestra as well as their own groups

and ensembles. Most importantly,

Conservatory instructors nurture and

develop students to their highest

potential.

The riGhT aGe

Quite often, we are asked what the ‘ideal

age’ is for beginning music lessons. The

answer is any age can be the right age

to begin. It really depends on the person

and the instrument chosen. String lessons

often begin with students as young as

four, with active parental involvement.

Piano lessons can begin as soon as the

child is tall enough to sit at the bench

and reach the keys. Many students begin

playing piano, violin, cello and guitar at

a young age. As they grow older and

develop physically, they can begin to

explore other instruments. Often students

begin taking lessons on winds and brass

instruments to complement their school

band program. Starting music lessons is

a personal decision for every family and

depends on the maturity, interest and

motivation of your child regardless of age.

Of course, individual lessons aren’t just

for children. Many adults with a passion

for music decide they want to know

more about their favourite instrument –

including their own voices. Our teachers

welcome students of any age from young

children to mature adults.

hoW musiC Lessons WorK

Music lessons at the Conservatory are

taught one-on-one with an instructor and

are typically once a week for 30 minutes.

Lessons are available seven days a week

and generally take place after school

and on weekends. The Conservatory also

offers lessons during the day if desired.

Lessons usually run from September to

early June, but students may begin at any

time during the year. For a complete list

of our private instructors and our current

fee information, please visit www.uregina.

aCComPanimenT

Whether learning new repertoire or

preparing for an important audition,

concert or exam, singers and

instrumentalists need to work with a

private coach/pianist. The Conservatory

has a number of outstanding

accompanists who can help you become

a better performer by improving your

interpretation of a song or instrumental

piece through a stronger understanding

of harmony, rhythm, ensemble playing,

and musical style.

After all, managing money is more about

what you spend than what you earn!

Understanding where your money is

financially healthy. In this course, learn

the difference between needs and wants,

why you should set goals, how to track

Whether you’re establishing credit for the first time or rebuilding after getting off course, it’s important to know how to use this financial tool responsibly. Using credit properly can make your life better. Using credit poorly can have devastating effects. Dealing with credit is similar to other forms of spending: it requires a plan and preparation to stay in good shape. In this course, learn how to organize your current finances, understand credit reports, build credibility, research the best credit options for your situation, learn what creditors

look for and how to be a wise credit user.

riches and What to Do with Them

When we look closely at our spending

we always find items that cost us more

than they should. Are we paying the

lowest fees possible? Are we paying

for services we never use? Are there

cheaper alternatives? In this session we

will explore ways to identify and change

these areas of overpayment in our day

to day lives and in our investments. We’ll

then consider what to do with the saved

money. Invest? Re-allocate? Save?

The PLeasure oF Pessimism

We live (and have always lived) in troubled

times. Mark Twain said, “The man who is

a pessimist before 48 knows too much;

if he is an optimist after it, he knows too

little.” Many people respond to troubled

times with a feeling of injured self pity as

if things should be better and the media,

politicians and writers of self-help books

continue to tell us that we can make things

better and better. But then, when we don’t

(or can’t), what then? We’re left feeling

not only unhappy, but we’re unhappy that

we’re unhappy. In this talk Darrel Lawlor

will put darkness squarely on the table.

He will sing the praises of pessimism and

emphasize the wisdom and beauty of

thinking of life as a troubled affair.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Regina offers an ongoing series of non-credit Chinese courses for those interested in travelling to or doing business in China. The Confucius Institute also offers a series of workshops designed for those with an interest in Chinese culture and who want to learn about it in an interesting way. Not only can you gain new ideas and knowledge about Chinese food and arts, you can also learn some practical skills from qualified teachers. We encourage you to join us and have a lot of fun!

“Enrolling in the Public Relations program at the University of Regina was a great way to complement my Bachelor of Arts degree with a professional certificate. Taking the courses online gave me the flexibility to study and work at the same time. Speaking of which, I was able to secure a full-time position on the basis I would complete the certificate in the near future. Just the simple fact of seeing the program pay off for me right away was incredibly reassuring.”
