Attack! Boss! Cheat Code!A Gamer's Alphabet

Chris BartonAn ironic yet informative alphabet that defines the most important gaming termsthat everyone needs to know, Attack! Boss! Cheat Code! A Gamer's ABC is theultimate crossover gift for our age, a book that can actually bring together videogame-obsessed kids and their often perplexed parents. If you can decipher the following sentence, you don't need this book:

"This open beta game is in third-person but first-person is unlockable if you know thecheat code or install your own mod, but either way, for the best attack on the boss onthis level, try to grab that power-up!"

Almost any 9-year old could translate for you but if you don't have access to one, trythis book instead.

Brilliantly colorful illustrations by video game artist Joey Spiotto vividly embody the terminologyof video games, bringing the world of video games to life

Lucid definitions make terms clear and understandable, even for non-players

Presented as an alphabet, Attack! Boss! Cheat Code! is also an entertaining visual history andglossary of gaming, providing a solid understanding of terms that have made their way intoeveryday language, from "RPG" to "mod"

Reach up and grab your head. Feel that? No,

not your hair. And take off that hat in the house!

Now . . . try again. Feel what’s underneath your

hair? That’s your skull! The bones of your skull

are super-hard so they can

protect your brain. Your brain

is the most important part of

your body, so you gotta keep it

safe! (That’s why you wear a

helmet when you ride some-

thing . . . that’s a time to keep it

extra-safe!) If something whacks

your head, your skull protects

your big brain.

In this experiment, you’re going to

invent a skull. Then we’ll smash it

against a wall! (Don’t worry. Smash-

ing is a key part of the experiment.

No actual skulls will be hurt.)

Along with the materials to make your new

skull, you’ll be using one other important

piece of gear: Your actual brain! Your brain will

give you ideas on how to make the skull. Then

your brain will tell your eyes and hands how to

build it. Having a brain is pretty cool, right?

STUFF YOU NEED:

• Balloons• A pile of stuf

f from

around your house,

such as: • styrofoam • cups • wrapping paper

• cotton • old socks • felt • egg cartons

• bubble wrap

• newspaper • tape...lots of

tape!

STEP STEP:BY

1.

FILL A BALLOON WITH WATER. If you need help tying the balloon tightly, ask one of those people who used to be kids (you know...grown-ups!). From now on, this water balloon is your brain!

Now you’re going to INVENT A SKULL FOR YOUR BALLOON-BRAIN. You can use any of the materials you’ve gathered (don’t be afraid to try some that are not on my list.) Don’t buy any materials . . . be creative! Just use the stuff you find around your house.

2.

Build the skull around your balloon-brain. It should surround the entire balloon, ready to protect it from harm! Think about combining hard and soft materials. When you think your skull is well protected...

...THROW IT AGAINST A WALL! Yep, it’s testing time here at Skull Central. (Quick tip: To avoid a giant mess, do your testing outside. You’ll thank me later.) Stand a few feet away from the wall and toss the skull-covered balloon at it.

3.

If your balloon does not pop, you saved your brain! You are now a SKULL INVENTOR! If your balloon pops, clean up the mess . . . and then it’s back to the drawing board! Scientists always learn from their mistakes!

“Why did the skeleton chase the skull? It wanted

to get ahead!”

“Burst your balloon? No

worries! Science is all about trial and

error. That means if it doesn’t work,

try again!”

“The biggest dinosaur skull

ever found was eight feet (2.4 meters) long. It was from a torosaurus. Good luck

finding a hat that fits that head!”

Your skull feels like one big bone, doesn’t it? Nope! The entire skull has more than 20 bones in it. The hard, round part on top is formed by four larger pieces that fit together like jigsaw puzzles. Just be sure not to lose any pieces!

Stuck behind enemy

Want to hide your latest

going to show you how to

make invisible ink!

(Note: I did not use invisible

ink to write this book. Other-

wise, you would not be able to

read it. I used visible ink. But that’s for

another lesson...)

STUFF YOU NEED:

• whole milk (make sure it’s

not half-milk...get it?)

• a glass for the milk

• paper to write on

• cotton swabs for

dipping pencils

for revealing

(you’ll see...really!)

• a friend (for reading)

STEP STEP:BY1.

POUR YOURSELF A GLASS OF MILK. Dip your cotton swab into the milk. Use the cotton swab like a pen, and write on the paper. When the tip runs dry, dip again and finish writing!

Now take the paper and gently move it through the air. As you do, THE MILK WILL EVAPORATE. The paper is dry . . . or is it? Bwa-ha-ha! (Sorry, that was my mad scientist coming out . . . I’m better now.)

2.

The water has evaporated, but the fat from the milk is still there on the paper. You need some-thing to stick to the fat. THIS WILL REVEAL YOUR HIDDEN MESSAGE.

3.

HERE’S THE COOL PART: Take two pencils and rub the tips of the pencils together. Do this while hold-ing the pencils above your hidden message. It will look like black snow or pepper is falling. That’s the graphite from the pencils.

5.

NOW YOU NEED THAT FRIEND SO YOU CAN SHOW OFF!

6.

“No Way! Yes, Way!

This experiment won’t work with other kinds of milk. Why not? In low-fat or skim milk, the fat is nearly all removed. If you used those, it would almost be like

putting water on the paper. There would be no fat for the “pepper”

to stick to!”

Steampunk Alphabet

Manuel SumberacAn alphabetical journey through a richly colorful and detailed steampunk world, perfect for geeky parents to introduce the alphabet to young readers. Steampunk, with its odd but irresistible combination of Victorian-era style andfuturistic sensibility, comes to children's books with this alphabet. Lushly texturedpaintings and rhyming text illustrate each letter of the alphabet, inviting the reader on avoyage through a quirky steampunk fantasy world, where things are not quite what onemight expect. Kids will love the imaginative depictions of the machines and objects thatexemplify each letter, while older steampunk fans (from tweens to parents) will enjoyporing over these gorgeous retro-futuristic illlustrations--and you will find no simpering Ais for Apple in this world.

though it began as a sub-genre of science fiction, steampunk has quickly crossed culturalcategories to become a popular theme in fashion, design, film, music, and even food and drinkno less an authority than IBM's Social Sentiment Index, which analysed more than half a millionpublic posts on message boards, blogs, social media sites, and websites, predicted in late 2013that steampunk will build to a peak trend over the next 2 years
