FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to fall semester at

Wallace State, where we are contin-

uing to celebrate our Year of the

Student!

Wallace State is committed to

ensuring that our students are the

best prepared students in the nation,

ready to achieve the success they

deserve and desire. Our college has

been rated the first choice among

community colleges by high school

seniors taking the ACT, and this spring the Aspen Institute

designated Wallace State as one of the top 120 community

colleges in America according to our student outcomes. We

lead the Alabama Community College System in graduation

rates, and a recent report in Community College Week

ranked Wallace State among the "Top 50 Associate De-

grees: Health Professions and Related Clinical Sciences" in

the United States. We hold in high regard our rich history of

awards for teaching excellence, and we are most proud of

our outstanding students who enable us to achieve these ac-

colades, and to whom we are everlastingly dedicated to

providing supportive and state-of-the art learning environ-

ments and a world-class education.

During this Year of the Student, we are collecting good

news about our students such as Kenneth Harris, a Wallace

State nursing grad, who is featured in the recent UAB An-

nual Report; or nursing graduate Laura Russell Richerzha-

gen, who recently published a journal article on her

research; or welding student Joey Foster who placed first

in national skills USA; or recent alumni Chase Carpenter

and Steffanie Hocking who were accepted to the

McWhorter School of Pharmacy; or Ty Parker, Wallace

State alum who was UA Drum major and is now Band Di-

rector at Holly Pond. The list goes on, and it is especially

rewarding for all of us who serve in higher education to

witness the outcomes of those we serve. If you have a suc-

cess story about a current student of alumnus you'd like to

share, please email it to

[email protected].

Many events and activities are in store for students this

fall, including the Wallace State Theatre production of the

Broadway musical "Guys and Dolls" and two new exhibits

hosted by The Evelyn Burrow Museum. A new Simulation

and Modeling Certificate is being offered through the Vi-

sual Communications Department in conjunction with the

Advanced Visualization Center, where students can train in

virtual reality using 3-D and 4-D simulation-based learning

platforms. Our new short-term green construction program

offers training for the growing number of green collar jobs

free of charge for those who qualify. Short-term programs

are also being introduced for Patient Care Assistants, Dial-

ysis Technicians and Opthalmic Assistants.

Whether you are a returning Wallace State student or

enrolling for the first time, we are delighted that you are

joining us this fall and we are eager to serve you.

Vicki P. Hawsey

President
