Letter from the President
Over the past 30 years, donors have estab-
lished field-of-interest funds at the Albu-
querque Community Foundation and
directed us to use the spending from these
endowments to address the changing needs
of our community over time. Given this
significant responsibility, we carefully review every program we
fund – community impact is the ultimate measure of honoring
the intent of these visionary donors. Currently, the Foundation’s
fields-of-interest are Arts & Culture; Education; Environmental
& Historic Preservation; Health and Human Services.
The endowments of field-of-interest funds, along with those of
impact funds (which allow for giving that is not restricted by
field) comprise our Competitive Grant Program. Each year, the
Foundation receives nearly two hundred grant proposals that are
thoroughly reviewed by community grant panels. The available
funds are then granted to the organizations that have developed
programming that will achieve the greatest impact on the con-
stituencies they serve.
On the occasion of our 30th anniversary, we’d like to share with
you a list of these funds and a few of this year’s competitive
grants funded through these funds. We sincerely thank the gen-
erous donors who have entrusted their charitable dollars to the
discretion of the Foundation. Rest assured, every dollar is care-
fully spent. continued on page 3
Sincerely,
Diane Harrison Ogawa
President
Letter from the
Executive Director
According to the most recent
numbers published by Giving
USA, individual giving contin-
ues to account for the largest
percentage of donations to
charity.
Just ask those who generously
contribute to our Partners in
Philanthropy annual drive. With their support, the Founda-
tion has been able to respond to the significant demands cur-
rently faced by our community. So far in 2011, the
Foundation has been able to grant $2 million to meet these
needs because our donors stepped up and recognized that the
time for philanthropy is now.
The Foundation would not be able to provide this type of sup-
port to the nonprofits in our community without the com-
mitment of our donors who give to help cover our operating
expenses so that we can further our role in the community,
growing and expanding to meet increased need.
We exist to inspire and grow philanthropy by managing a pool
of endowment funds for the long-term benefit of the com-
munity. We could not achieve this without the generous sup-
port of the following individual and corporate donors who
have contributed to our Partners in Philanthropy annual giv-
ing campaign. The campaign runs through December 31,
2011—it is not too late to make your contribution.

This is What 30 Looks Like
The Foundation celebrated its 30th Anniversary with more than 600
people in attendance. In honor of the anniversary, Board Chair Diane
Harrison Ogawa announced the establishment of the Visionary
Fund, an endowed fund to recognize the vision of the Foundation’s
founders and first trustees. One hundred people are being sought to
contribute $1,000 each to establish the $100,000 fund that will make
a grant each year to a “visionary” nonprofit organization. See the cur-
rent Visionary Fund donors list below.
Other highlights of the celebration included a brilliant 30th Anniver-
sary video highlighting the Foundation’s milestones over the past 30
years (view it at albuquerquefoundation.org) and performances by
grant recipients including Los Reyes de Albuquerque and the Na-
tional Institute of Flamenco.
Nancy Johnson, the Foundation’s Program Director, was honored for her 20 years of serv-
ice and awarded this beautiful tree sculpture inscribed with a Chinese Proverb, “One gen-
eration plants the trees, another get the shade.”
Thank you to the generous Corporate sponsors of our 2011 30th anniversary luncheon.

Great Grants Funded through the Competitive Grant Program
Alzheimer’s Association At least 70% of the 38,000 New Mexicans living with Alzheimer’s are
cared for at home by a family member. Often times, persons
providing care are elderly spouses. The grant awarded to the
Alzheimer’s Association funded a program that provides de-
mentia caregivers, who are twice as likely as other caregivers to
have physical or psychological problems, with brief periods of
rest from the demands of caregiving. The program offers re-
imbursement to primary caregivers for up to three instances a
year of their contracting with an outside source to provide care
for their loved ones.
ARCA The grant awarded to this organization is helping to provide safety and mitigate further life disruption
for traumatized children with disabilities by healing and/or reunifying their families through foster care. When
families cannot be reunified, the children are placed with loving permanent families. The intent of foster care
is to make each child safe and provide for medical care and behavioral needs while supporting the family. Cur-
rently, foster care funded by this grant is being provided for 26 abused, neglected, and fragile children with dis-
abilities.

futureChampion Building
By now you’ve probably read that the Foundation will be moving to a permanent home! We couldn’t be more proud to have been selected by
Paul and Patti Marianetti to be the ‘Champions of the Champion Building’, the 100-year-old red brick building that stands on the corner of
7th and Tijeras in downtown Albuquerque. A major renovation and facelift appropriate for this centenarian beauty is currently underway.
By early next year, it’s going to be the new jewel in the community jewelry box. With new flooring, wiring, plumbing, paint, and lighting,
along with a new roof, this magnificent structure is being restored literally from the ground up.
This project would not be possible without truly generous contributions of time, talent, and, of course, treasure from those in the community
who recognize the splendid opportunity this building presents for the Foundation and for the community. Fortunately, we already have a
commitment from the Gorham Family to sponsor a community conference room even larger than the one in our current location. As always,
it will be offered free of charge to other nonprofit organizations.
We’d like to thank those who have already contributed and those who are thinking about it. Tours are available for those interested in a spon-
sorship opportunity. Sponsorships range from $1,000 to $100,000. We certainly need your help.

The Realtor Fund – Then, Now, Forever
Realtors have played an integral role in the development of the greater Albuquerque area for 90 years. Through their dedicated
efforts, they have positively shaped the community. In celebration of their 90th anniversary, the Greater Albuquerque Association
of Realtors established the Then, Now, Forever Fund to provide a permanent fund “to aid in creating adequate housing, building
functioning cities, developing productive industries and preserving a healthful environment in the area.” $90,000 was con-
tributed to establish the fund, $1,000 in honor of each of the 90 presidents of the board. The organization intends to donate
subsequent amounts corresponding to their anniversaries over
the next ten years, growing the fund to $1,000,000 on their
100th anniversary!

Donor Dish
The Albuquerque Community Foundation values fresh ideas and
thoughtful philanthropy. So, we’ve invited our nonprofit partners to give us the dish on what is going on in our community. On Tuesday,
November 1, we’re going to dish about “Where are all the New Buildings Coming From?”
Besides the Foundation, we can think of nine other nonprofits with new digs. Join us to talk about who and how. Call our office to RSVP,

As a twenty-year member of the United States House of Representatives,
Manuel Lujan, Jr. saw the growing need to help young people with their
rising college costs. A fund was established in his honor to provide resources
to students from 24 designated central New Mexico high schools. Each
year, scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors attending a New Mex-
ico four-year college or university. The designated high schools each select
one student for a $600-per-year award, renewable over four years of un-
dergraduate studies.
Student Aid Funds
The Foundation has 15 scholarship and student aid programs to
help New Mexico students attain their educational goals. Each
program was established by a donor with individual interests
and priority areas. These programs represent the broad diversity
of the generous individuals who care about education and be-
lieve the best way to give back to the community is by sup-
porting future generations.

Since our last newsletter, the Future Fund members have been a busy group of young philan-
thropists. In June, members gathered at the old Hiland Theater for their annual luncheon.
Members listened to reports from the three organizations they awarded grants to in 2010: La
Familia, Watermelon Mountain Ranch, and the New Mexico Collaboration to End Hunger.
Each organization reported positive news on the success of the programs funded.
The group was treated to a sneak peak tour of the old theater that will soon become the new
home for NDI (National Dance Institute). Look forward to the grand opening performance
in May 2012!
The Summer Soiree membership party was also a great success, recruiting new members and
reconnecting old friends. Members enjoyed a preview of “Hot Cars” from the 2011 Concours
du Soleil to get “revved” up for the event. This year, members volunteered to organize the
Concours Road Rally and After Party.

Better Than a Sweater
Great for everyone on
your personal and professional
gift list!
The holidays are once again nearly upon us. We have a great suggestion for gifts that
are easy, affordable yet generous, don’t have to be gift wrapped, and won’t wind up in
a stack of unused, unappreciated gifts. Charitable Gift Cards are available in $25, $50,
$100 & $200 increments. Your recipient simply sends them to any nonprofit organi-
zation of his or her choice. That organization calls us and we send them a check. YOU
get the tax deduction, your gift recipient gets the recognition, and everyone feels good.

Gordon Bernell Charter School
Exposure to education and positive role models will change the future for many of the kids at Gordon Bernell, and the grant made by the
Competitive Grant Program funded one such unique opportunity. The grant helped Gordon Bernell students to work on designing and de-
veloping the “Pocket Park” on Gold Avenue between 2nd & 3rd Streets and has allowed
students to reconnect with their community in a positive way. Imagine how good students
feel when they can brag to family members or friends that they played a part in the building
of the park not far from where many students live. Not only is the park a wonderful addition
to the revitalization of downtown Albuquerque, it is a shining example of the positive impact
an effective collaboration —combining the resources of government, private business, and
industry, along with those of the nonprofit community — can have.

Concours du Soleil
“An Evening of European Romance” was just that. Beautiful cars, people, food, entertainment and venue created a marvelous evening again this
year. Three new events were added -- a Road Rally, After Party at the Finishline and a free public show held at the Old Town Square. Guests stood
by as hot car after hot car raced to the finish line. The proceeds of this event are divided, with one half being contributed to the permanent Cinco
Amigos Fund of the Foundation while the other half goes to funding grants made through the Foundation’s grant program.
Concours du Soleil sells out earlier every year. Save the date now for the next Concours, to be held September 15th thru 17th, 2012. To view
photos or to be added to the mailing list, visit SeeHotCars.com or Like us on th SeeHotCars Facebook page.

French Funerals & Cremations
At the request of his grandfather, “Chet” re-
turned to Albuquerque to begin a career in fu-

Wheaton College and serving in the U.S.
Army. Upon completing the Dallas Institute
of Mortuary Science to become a licensed funeral director, his grand-
father sold him 1/3 of French Mortuary and made him a partner in
the business. Just three weeks later, Mr. French died suddenly and
Chet purchased the remaining interest in the business, where he has
served for 41 years now.
Chet has also served on many volunteer boards, including those for
