Based on workforce needs in Person and Caswell counties, PCC has begun offering training that can be completed in six months or less. BioWork (Hybrid - some modules are online)Prepare for one of our state’s up and coming careers—biotechnology! BioWork will prepare you to work as a process technician in biotechnology, pharmaceutical or chemical manufac-turing companies. Students enrolling in the hybrid option must be enrolled in JobNOW: 12 in 6 program. Please see page 15 for more information.

PhlebotomyTrain for a career as a phlebotomist, working in a hospital, medical office or health care clinic. Phlebotomists obtain blood and other specimens for laboratory analysis. PCC’s pro-gram will train you in the proper specimen collection and handling, communication skills and maintaining patient data. Graduates are eligible to test for national certification.

Nursing Assistant INursing Assistants work with licensed health care professionals to perform nursing care and services to people of all ages. Graduates may find employment in home health agencies, hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, extended care facilities and doctors’ offices.

Pathways to SuccessA Cross Border Initiative

Pathways for Success is an initiative of Piedmont Community College and Danville Community College that addresses the financial funding gaps

that can negatively impact local Trade Act students. These students receive assistance in completing a degree, diploma or certificate in their program of study as defined by their Employment Security Commission or Virginia Employment Commission Trade Act training plan. They also are provided

with resources to assist them in seeking employment.

Do you know that most employers require you to have a high school education before

they will let you complete an application for employment? If you did not complete high

school, PCC has a program to help you! It’s the Adult Basic Skills/GED program.

Cost: Basic Skills & GED study = Free

GED Test Fee = $7.50

Requirements: Basic computer literacy skills, Internet

access, an e-mail account and self discipline to meet the minimum of 6 hours

per week online study requirement.

To register for Health Occupations, General Interest and Just for Fun classes located at the Workforce Training Center (WTC) or the Person County Campus (PCC), call (336)599-1181, ext. 268 or 269. To register for classes held on the Caswell County Campus (CCC) call (336) 599-1181, ext. 216 or (336) 694-5707, ext. 238.

Health OccupationsEMT-Basic Initial Training (17.2 CEUs)This course provides instruction in basic emergency medical care and is open to individuals with little or no medical experience. Upon the successful completion of the course, the student is eligible to take the North Carolina State EMT-Basic exam. Entrance requirements: Must be at least 17 years of age prior to the end of the course and a high school or G.E.D graduate. All students are required to take a reading placement test and score at a 10th grade or higher reading level. Interested students must attend the Orientation Session on Sept. 3, 6:30 p.m., in Room D120 on the Person County Campus. The placement test will be given at this time. Classes will be held at the Roxboro Fire Department, Station 1, Sept. 21-Feb. 8, Mon./Thurs., 6-10 p.m., and once a month on Saturdays, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. $175 plus cost of textbook.

CPR for Health Care Providers (American Heart Association)Instruction will be provided for 1- and 2- person Rescuer CPR on adults, children and infants. This course fulfills the CPR course requirement for entry into nursing and other medical training programs. Call for class schedule. $65 plus cost of certification card.

CPR/First Aid (1 CEU)This course provides instruction in the American Heart Association Basic Life Support -CPR for infants, children, adults and first aid techniques & applications to treat minor to major injuries. The registration fee is waived for North Carolina public school employees. Call for class schedule for Person County Campus. Tues. & Thurs., Oct 13 & 15, 3:30-6:30 p.m., CCC. $65 plus cost of certification cards.

Medical Coding – 96 hours (9.6 CEUs) Medical Coding provides a foundation in coding and classification systems in a variety of heath care settings. Emphasis is placed on ICD-9-CM, CPT and HCPCS coding principles, including coding practice using actual patient records, patient record abstracts and coding resources. Also included is instruction in the assignment of appropriate modifiers to CPT and HCPCS codes, for various health-care environments. Introductions and overview of DRG codes will also be covered. Upon completion, students should be able to apply coding principles to correctly assign ICD-9-CM, CPT and HCPCS codes. Prerequisite: Medical Terminology. Mon./Wed., Sept. 9-Dec. 16, 2-5 p.m., WTC.$175 plus cost of textbooks.

Medication Technician Training (2.4 CEU’s)This course provides training to unlicensed personnel in Adult Care Homes on how to properly administer medication to patients. The course prepares students to take the Medication for Unlicensed Personnel in Adult Care Homes Exam administered by the North Carolina Division of Facilities Services.Tues./Thur., Oct.6-29, 6-9 p.m., WTC. Mon.-Thurs., Sept 21-24, 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m., CCC. $65.

Nurse Aide Level I (14 CEUs)This course will prepare you to provide personal care and perform basic nursing skills for the elderly and other adults. A skill/competency evaluation is required. The course includes class, laboratory and clinical learning experiences. Nurse Aide Level I Refresher & Competency Evaluation (2.4 CEUs)This course prepares students whose listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry has expired and students who are listed on the Nurse Aide Registry in another state to take the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Competency Examination. Students must bring written documentation of registry listing, a picture ID and a signed Social Security Card to the first class meeting. The course consists of a review of basic NAI information and skills practice. Fire/Rescue TrainingFire and rescue training courses are offered on demand at the request of local fire departments and rescue squads in Person and Caswell counties. Teacher CertificationEffective Teacher Training (3 CEUs)For pre-service teachers and in-service teachers who have never had the course. Floral DesignThis course will teach you how to arrange flowers and the proper containers to use for the type of flowers. You will work with the Windows Operating System in file organization and management, will learn word-processing and spreadsheet techniques using Microsoft Word and Excel, and will use a Web Browser to search the Internet. Additional topics include e-mail and desktop publishing. No prior computer knowledge is needed for the class, but a USB flash drive is required. This course will benefit those desiring to update their current job skills as well as those who are just learning how to use the computer.

Computers for New Users (2.4 CEU’s); BDEC and CCCThis course is designed for the brand new computer user. It will introduce you to the parts of a personal computer and some common computer terminology. You will learn general concepts that will help you work in a Windows environment on the computer. You will also practice using a mouse and keyboard. You will also learn the basics of sending, receiving, and replying to email messages using a webmail account. No prior computer knowledge is needed for the class, but a USB flash drive is required.

Computers Intermediate (2.4 CEUs); BDECThis course is designed to expand knowledge of Microsoft Word 2007 and Excel 2007; includes an introduction to PowerPoint and enhanced word processing skills such as customizing bullets, creating tables, borders and templates. In Excel, you will learn how to incorporate formulas between sheets of a workbook, use a large spreadsheet, and create graphs from their data. If you have not completed Computers for Beginners, you should have some experience with Windows XP, Word and Excel. No previous experience with PowerPoint is expected. A USB flash drive is required.

Microsoft Excel—Introductory (1.8 CEUs); CCCNeed to solve numerical problems? Track numerical data? Excel is the program for you! Excel is an electronic spreadsheet. In the Excel class, we’ll introduce you to the terminology concepts and practical uses of an electronic spreadsheet. You’ll learn how to set up a basic spreadsheet, perform calculations using formulas and functions, and format the output for presentation purposes. Students taking this class should have a working knowledge of the computer keyboard and mouse.

Microsoft Excel—Intermediate (1.2 CEUs); CCCThis class is designed for those who want to know more than the basics taught in the introductory class. You will expand your knowledge of Microsoft Word and will work extensively with many techniques that will be useful in both the office and home. You will create and modify a variety of documents. Tables, columns, headers & footers, and various other advanced word processing skills will be explored. You should have prior experience with word.

Microsoft Word 2007 – Introductory (1.8 CEU’s); BDECIn this course you will learn the essentials of the most versatile word-processing program that allows you to create professional-looking documents and edit them with ease. With Microsoft Word you can develop various types of creative documents such as flyers, letters, and memos. Word 2007 has many new features to assist you with preparing your documents. This class will accommodate people who are new to word-processing or new to the 2007 version. A solid foundation in Windows, as well as a working knowledge of the computer keyboard and mouse is needed. A USB flash drive is required.

What are Continuing Education Courses?Continuing Education courses at Piedmont Community College are designed to provide citizens with opportunities to develop their academic and occupational potential to the fullest. Courses are also offered to stimulate the creative interests of students. Continuing Education courses can vary in length from one day to several months.

RegistrationRegistration is open to anyone at least 18 years of age or older. Individuals who are 16–17 years of age may enroll with written permission from their parent/guardian and the principal of the high school they are attending.

Registration may be completed in person, by mail or by phone.See specific “how to register” information in each program area listing.

We encourage the payment of the registration fee prior to the first day of class in order to hold your space; however, fees can be paid at the first class meeting. Some courses have a limited enrollment and are filled on a first-paid basis.

Continuing Education PoliciesRefundsRefunds for Continuing Education courses are made as follows: 100% if requested before a course begins or if the course is cancelled; 75% if requested after a course begins but before 10% of the total course meetings.

Course RepeatsState regulations require that students who take the same job-related course more than twice in a five-year period must pay additional charges for the course unless they are required to repeat the course for certification or license renewal.

CEU CreditsPolicy guidelines determine that any continuing education course may be taken for CEU’s. In order to receive CEU’s, successful completion of the course is required. One CEU is awarded for every 10 hours of class.

Class AttendanceRegular attendance at all class meetings is necessary for students to achieve educational success. Students are expected to be regular and punctual in meeting all classes. To receive credit for a course, the student must attend class prior to the 10% point of the class and attend a minimum of 80% of classes including labs, clinical and shop hours.
