Our registered dietitians offer free one-on-one consultations and group classes, plus they now develop nutrition tips that are distributed in client meal bags each week. MANNA’s NEW EVENT CALENDAR

Three major fundraising events for 2008- 2009

In the past, MANNA’s fundraising events were like a Thanksgiving dinner: with seven or eight offerings, you didn’t know where to start!

Just as we’ve renovated our building and meal program, we are streamlining our events calendar. This is partly an effort to reduce the number of times we ask you, our donors, for support throughout the year. It will also provide the development team with new resources to ensure that each event meets its fundraising goals.

The best elements of our signature events will be available for your enjoyment in the coming years, like spectacular dance performances, tantalizing cuisine, and breathtaking artwork created by a community of supporters including dancers, chefs and artists to raise funds to support MANNA’s mission to nourish clients.

Pie in the Sky kicks off this fall, Shut Up & Dance leaps up in March of 2009 and May welcomes our new spring event, Nourish2009, which combines the best elements of A Show of Hands and ChefAID.

We hope you will continue to be an active member of the MANNA community by supporting these exciting events.

a LETTER from ThE C.E.O.Dear Friends,

A few weeks ago I had a chance to deliver meals to some of our clients for the first time in many months. Although my time “on the road” was brief, the motivational impact has been significant.

Driving home that day down I-95, I re-traced the trip in my mind and thought about those I just met:

Approaching the newly refurbished MANNA with its expanded capacity, I realized that these good people do feel cared for and hopeful in the face of their illnesses as we provide 100% of their nutritional needs 7 days a week. I’d like to personally thank you for your loyal support and “Bless you for coming by.”

Nutrition education is an essential component to improving our clients’ ability to attain and sustain their nutritional health. MANNA is committed to not only deliver the meals necessary to improve a nutritionally compromised client, but also to teach that real foods can provide important nourishment. As a result, MANNA has moved away from canned liquid supplemental meal replacers in favor of home-cooked food and homemade smoothies that clients can prepare for themselves.

Suykee Or, a summer nutrition intern from Cornell University, developed a series of nutrition tips that will be distributed in the client meal bags this fall. These short and fun tip sheets are designed to provide clients with information about what types of nutrients are included in their meals and how they relate to their health. MANNA hopes to encourage the concepts of balance, variety and moderation for meal planning so that when our clients are stable and no longer in need of the meal delivery program, they will make informed food choices. Our hope is that by providing information and education on food that is affordable for our clients to eventually stock in their own kitchens, we can help each person maintain optimal nutritional health.

MANNA has also added a new Monthly Nutrition Tips page to the Services menu of our website. Don’t forget to sign up for monthly e-mails of healthy MANNA recipes at www.mannapa.org/nutrition.

A man with severe diabetes who exclaimed, “Bless you for coming by and it’s my 65th birthday today. I’m a lucky man!”

A middle-aged woman, forced to leave her job due to a three-day-a-week kidney dialysis regimen, told me how grateful she was that MANNA now delivers a full week of meals on one day, freeing up a day for her sister to take her on errands and out for a ride.

And the young man, not yet 30 years old and barely able to open his door, who, when asked how he was feeling, answered, “I just don’t know.”
