Special Santas Team selects a theme, and this year they chose

Zeller Welcomes Hillside Students to Their Family

Talk to any employee at Zeller Corporation who has

worked with Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection

student Sidney Phinazee and you would believe that you

were talking to a member of Sidney’s family. In a way, you are.

Because for this Rochester-based electric company, the

commitment to partner with Hillside Work-Scholarship

Connection is one that management and staff honor very highly.

By providing more than just a part-time job for the students,

Zeller staff foster a sense of family for the students as they help

them reach their full potential.

This spirit of benevolence is one that stems from the very

beginnings of the Zeller Corporation. The company was founded

in 1961 by Henry Zeller, who

himself was supported through

college. Throughout his business

and personal life, Henry valued the

opportunity he was given.

Education became an underlying

tenet throughout Zeller history.

Hank and his son Eric Zeller, CEO

from 1986–2001, laid down the

foundation of this philosophy

through their support of young

students both inside and outside

the Zeller family during their 40

years of ownership.

When Eric Zeller decided to

step down in 2001, it was this

strong foundation that led Gary Haseley, Zeller’s new CEO, and 65

employees of the Zeller Corporation to recognize and honor

Zeller with the establishment of the Eric Zeller Scholarship Fund.

Through individual employee contributions to the fund,

supplemented with financial backing from Zeller Corporation,

$10,500 will be awarded to Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection

to support student advocacy services.“Every year we hope the

fund will get bigger,” says Karen Tabar, Human Resources

Manager, Zeller Corporation.“It makes us feel good that we can

make a difference in a student’s life.”

One of the students who has been benefiting recently from

Zeller’s support is Sidney Phinazee. Sidney is a senior who has

been working part-time at Zeller as part of a new partnership

between Zeller and Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection. This

partnership provides for employment of students in the Hillside-

Work Scholarship program, along with job mentoring support

while they are employed with the company.

The part-time employment is important for students earning

money for college, but it is the mentoring portion of this program

that makes it different from other types of employment situations.

Zeller employees have a genuine interest in helping Sidney

succeed and they provide him with the tools to be successful.

“The goal we have for Sidney is that he goes to college. By

helping him develop good work habits and study habits, we

hopefully keep him going on a straight line so that he can

graduate and go to college. Education is the big thing,” says Jeff

Arnold,Warehouse Manager, and work site mentor for Sidney.

At Zeller, this personal commitment comes from the top

down. As the person whose idea it

was to partner with Hillside Work-

Scholarship Connection, Zeller

CEO Gary Haseley has a vested

interest in making the relationship

a success.“I believe that you can

make a difference by helping

children get a good start in life

through education and hard work,

which is reflected in our personal

commitment to hiring and

mentoring city students and

supporting their educational

pursuits,” says Haseley.

As a former co-op student

himself, Haseley knows the value

of a good mentoring relationship. According to Tabar, he talks

with Sidney daily as his schedule allows and he monitors his

progress to make sure that he is working hard. Showing his strong

support for Sidney, Haseley recently gave him a card with money

inside as a reward for all of his hard work.

Sidney himself also knows that Gary is there for him at

any time.“He talks with me about what I’m going to do after

graduation. Anything I need, he tells me just to ask him,”

says Sidney.

Through Zeller Corporation, Sidney has found a group of

people who want nothing more for him than his success.“We

become a second family for a student who works here,” says

Arnold,“People care about Sidney, care about what happens to

him.”What Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection

has found is a true business partner.

VO L U N T E E R S I N P R O F I L E

Name: Ahnie’s Angels

Family: Ahnie’s Angels are relatives of Ahnie Burke, a 95-

year-old who has inspired her family to devote time and

resources to various area causes and charities. About 20

related households are involved in Ahnie’s Angels.

Volunteers since: 1997

Reason began volunteering: Rob Swapceinski, a family

representative, says,“My Aunt

Ahnie took care of all of the

kids in my family as we grew

up, but she also took care of

those in need in the

community.We decided a few

years ago to carry on her

legacy and help the community

in her name.”

Typical activities as a

volunteer: Each year Ahnie’s

Angels volunteer to support an

organization in meeting its

needs. In previous years, they

have helped with projects at Open Door Mission and

Corpus Christi. This year, Ahnie’s Angels are volunteering

at several Hillside Children’s Center events. They have also

donated a 20-foot shade tree, with a discount from Bristol’s

Garden Center, to Camp Possibilities on Lehigh Station

Road. A plaque will be placed near the tree, dedicating

it to Ahnie Burke.

Lessons learned: “Getting involved in our community has

brought my family together,” says Rob.“We share something

that we can remember hearing about from Aunt Ahnie in our

childhood. I enjoy sitting with Ahnie now and telling her

stories about what we’ve been doing, who we’ve been

helping. She gets such enjoyment from hearing our stories.”

What volunteering gives back: “My family strives to do

more than just give money or donate things, although that’s

important,” Rob says.“We

want to get in there and show

support for the people who

are already doing this work.

We want the staff at the places

we volunteer to know that

their work is noticed and

appreciated.”

Advice to those considering

volunteering: “You can make

a really big difference in

some people’s lives without

feeling locked down into a

time commitment for

volunteering,” explains Rob.“I hear friends say that they

don’t have the time to volunteer. They may not realize that

you can do something really worthwhile in a short amount of

time. My family does one big project a year together and we

are able to plan it for a long time. Don’t let time constraints

keep you from helping others who need you.”

Creating a Carnival of Fun Each fall during freshman student orientation, University of

Rochester students, staff, and alumni volunteer to spend a

day serving their community. For the past five years,

University of Rochester volunteers have spent Wilson Day

creating and staffing a carnival for children who live on

Hillside Children’s Center’s Monroe Avenue Campus. This

August, 35 University of Rochester and Hillside volunteers led

games, gave out prizes, and served lunch to youth.“This is a

great opportunity to come out and do something for others,”

said Emily Riegel, a freshman at the University of Rochester.

University of Rochester volunteers Emily Riegel, Kim Guche,

Stephanie Bartlow, Anna Czapla, and Megan Knapp await the

arrival of children from Hillside before the start of the carnival.

Mollie shows her

artistic side by decorating

the arm of a carnival attendee

Kodak Makes a Difference at HillsideKodak employee volunteers spent Kodak People Make a

World of Difference Day on September 8 planting flowers and

painting the kitchen of Hillside Children’s Center’s Hogan

Road Group Home in Fairport. This annual volunteer day is a

global initiative that encourages employees to donate their

time and energy to improve the quality of life in the

communities where they live and work. Hillside has been

fortunate to host volunteers for Kodak People Make a World

of Difference Day for over 10 years.

Kodak volunteers worked with great enthusiasm on September

8 to help make the Hogan Road Group Home a brighter place.

A sampling of how individuals and organizations

have given their t ime and talent to Hil lside, proving that actions speak louder than words.

A Benevolent MissionWith a mission that includes encouraging philanthropy,

facilitating community involvement, and fostering

volunteerism among real estate professionals, the Realtors

Community Foundation has recently chosen Hillside as a

major beneficiary of its efforts.

Over the summer, the Realtors Community Foundation

raised $13,197 for Hillside Children’s Center through golf

tournaments at Greystone, Shadow Lake, and Shadow Pines

Golf Clubs. Three hundred eighty golfers participated in the

tournaments.

The Realtors Community Foundation also recently

pledged $50,000 to support the construction of a new

emergency shelter and health clinic on Hillside Children’s

Center’s Monroe Avenue Campus.

Through its generosity, the Realtors Community

Foundation has garnered a special place in the hearts and

minds of Hillside children and families. It has proven that a

group of individuals can come together with the common

mission to make a difference in the lives of others.

Tom Willis III, Chairman of the Board, Realtors Community

Foundation; Judy Columbus, Judy Columbus Realty; and

John Piper, CEO and Treasurer, Realtors Community

Foundation, help break ground for Hillside’s new

Emergency Shelter.

Golf Tourney Supports Fire VictimsThe Monroe County Fire Marshals and Inspectors Association

raised $3,000 for Hillside Children’s Center at their 10th

Annual John Holtz Memorial Golf Tournament in August at

Victor Hills Golf Club. The money raised is being used to

support fire victims and children who have started fires.

Special thanks to Monroe Ambulance, Emergency

Enclosures, Doan Buick, and Wegmans Food Markets for

sponsoring the event.

Children Tell Us Special Santas Theme

The children speak for the nation and the world with

their small but powerful tribute. More important is the fact

that these children, whose individual “worlds” feel confusing

and uncertain, are now expressing concern about the world

they live in. It is touching to see them demonstrate

such compassion and concern for others.

The Special Santas Team chose gingerbread

people as its theme because each gingerbread

person is unique, special, and loved by all.

Like these gingerbread people, each child

and family Hillside serves is unique. We have

very special children who simply hope for a

game, radio, big stuffed animal, or book. A food

certificate would mean so much to a child’s family,

giving them the ability to have some special treats to

share on their family’s holiday.Whether you choose a child

or a family, donate a new toy, or give a cash donation, you will

be a very Special Santa to someone.

From the words of professionals, we know that, as adults,

we must try to provide our children and teenagers with hope

and reassurance about the future. The Hillside Special Santas

program is a commitment to the future of our children and

families. This commitment includes 3,500 individuals who will

be receiving services at Hillside Children’s Center and

Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection during the

holidays. Just by having the Hillside Special

Santas program, Hillside has assured them that

they can count on us this holiday season.

A gingerbread person decorated by one of

the children has a small caption with it that

reads,“Help is on the way.” Our children

need to have hope for the future. Please call

Those Year-End AppealsWith roughly one million charities operating in the

United States—and most of them seeking year-end

contributions—it’s no wonder your mailbox bulges with

appeal letters as the calendar winds down. Seems like

everybody wants your money!

Sorting through the mail, you find familiar organizations

and some you don’t recognize. You wonder, how did these

people get my name? And to add to the onslaught of mail,

your telephone rings more often.“Please help us meet our

financial crisis!”“We’ll have to close the doors if we don’t pay

our bills.”“Children will starve unless you give.”

It’s downright confusing…and irritating.

As you consider the variety and intensity of the financial

appeals you receive, we hope you will remember at least five

things about Hillside Children’s Foundation:

1 . W E C O U N T YO U A S PA RT O F O U R FA M I LY.

Whether you are a recent friend of Hillside, or a longtime

supporter, we value your interest and involvement. We

consider you a partner with us in this great enterprise. You

are part of our family. And together, we share a common

commitment, a common mission.

2 . W E R E M A I N T RU E TO O U R M I S S I O N .

As you know, our mission is to give children and youth access

to the opportunities that will enable them to achieve their

potential and to keep families together and functioning—

especially during those times when everything appears to be

breaking down around them.We want you to know that we

have not veered from this, nor do we intend to.We lay our

plans, build our budgets, and monitor our results to better

achieve this mission. You can have confidence that we are

“staying the course.”

3 . W E D E P E N D O N YO U R FA I T H F U L G I V I N G .

Whether a small annual gift or a larger estate gift, we rely on

your financial support to help us accomplish our important

mission. The more you give, the more we can do. It’s that

simple. On the other hand, without you and our other

supporters, we could not exist.

4 . W E P L E D G E F I N A N C I A L F I D E L I T Y.

We wince when we hear of scandals in the news regarding

nonprofit organizations because this casts a shadow over all

charities. And so we want to affirm to you that financial

integrity is extremely important to us.We maintain strict

accounting and reporting rules. Our books are open and we

invite any donor to scrutinize us to the limit.

Please know that your contribution to Hillside is treated

carefully and with a keen sense of stewardship.

5 . W E O F F E R P E R S O N A L I Z E D S E RV I C E .

Do you have real estate that would make a tax-wise gift? Do

you need to receive lifetime income as part of your gift to

Hillside? For these and similar questions, Carol Bonenfant,

President, Hillside Children’s Foundation, can help.

Carol will meet with you personally to talk about your

giving goals and to show you various options. She will guard

your confidences and respect your freedom. She is also

available to consult with your professional advisors.

As the year-end appeals come and your thoughts turn more

toward charitable giving, remember Hillside. And please call

Carol Bonenfant at (716) 256-7516 to learn more about year-

end gift planning. Or, you can use the form below.

Finger Lakes Celebrates StudentsA ceremony in August at Hillside Children’s Center’s Finger

Lakes Campus School recognized each student individually

with an award for a subject or activity in which he/she

excelled. Certificates for merit in journal writing, reading,

science, and volunteering were given to students with

prideful smiles from their teachers.

After the awards ceremony, Hillside teachers, staff, and

students enjoyed a beautiful day outdoors by eating lunch

together at picnic tables. Finger Lakes Campus also

celebrated the official opening of its improved Hillside

Nature Trail, with renovations completed for the year. Staff

and students worked on the trail all summer, clearing debris,

painting the bridge, and marking the trail. The trail

celebration recognized their efforts in creating a peaceful

walk that everyone will enjoy for years to come.

Art teacher Tammi Evans shows off her grilling

technique at the Finger Lakes Campus picnic.

Zoo Trip Spawns Students’ Empathy

Students in Sharon Rosetti’s class at Hillside Children’s

Center’s Finger Lakes Campus School took a field

trip last summer to Rosamond Gifford Zoo in

Syracuse. While enjoying the sights and sounds,

several students noticed a poster announcing that

sponsors were needed to adopt zoo animals. When

they got back to school, Mrs. Rosetti’s class began

to plan how they could earn enough money for an

animal adoption. The class made their own posters

and asked other students and teachers for coins to put

into a piggy bank. Through their collection efforts, the class

was able to adopt a snow leopard at the zoo. Mrs. Rosetti’s

students were so successful, they were also able to donate

money to St. Alphonsus Food Pantry from funds remaining

after the animal adoption.

“The students enjoyed the first project so much, they

wanted to do more to help their community,” said teacher

Sharon Rosetti. Mrs. Rosetti’s class is now volunteering at First

Love Ministries by cooking and serving meals to the local

poor every Wednesday. Chris, one of Mrs. Rosetti’s students,

looks forward to serving his community each week.“We’re

helping make lunch for people who need our help, and I’m

also learning how to cook at the same time,” he said.

Oh,What aNight!A student dances to

the sounds of the

band Giga Beats at her

prom in the gymnasium

of Hillside Children’s

Center’s Finger Lakes

Campus School. Formally

dressed and with smiles that lit the

dance floor, several teenagers

attended this second annual event

held in June. Special thanks go out to

the community members and

businesses that donated decorations,

flowers, and clothing to make this a

special night for the young men and

women who attended.

Student Projects Have Community FocusAs part of Hillside Children’s Center schools’ focus on

community service during the summer months, students in

Maria Rosica’s class at Andrews-Trahey School served lunch

to Rochester homeless at the Open Door Mission in August.

Andrews-Trahey art students, with the help of art teacher

Lynn Bull, also donated 53 painted faces for displays at the

Monroe Avenue Branch of the Rochester Public Library, the

Boys and Girls Club on Genesee Street, and the Open Door

Mission. The Fleet All-Stars program, an initiative that rewards

youth groups and organizations for their community service

projects, provided $100 for the cost of art supplies. Fleet

Bank recently announced that an award of $15,000 would be

made to Hillside Children’s Center schools for its

participation in the All-Stars program. The Student Council at

Hillside’s Andrews-Trahey School will receive $7,500.

Hillside’s Finger Lakes Campus School will also receive

$7,500 in recognition of its students’ participation in several

community service projects.

sponsored by the City of

Rochester. As members of

the neighborhood, the

Hudson Team did its part

by planting flowers

supplied by the city and

attending the ribbon

by city officials to

commemorate the project.

Homers Has a Winning Season With a little help from baseball players in Auburn, Batavia,

and Rochester and the generosity of very special

community sponsors, Hillside children and families

had a winning season at bat this year. The new

Homers for Hillside initiative launched this year

in cooperation with the Auburn Doubledays,

the Batavia Muckdogs, and the Rochester

Red Wings raised a total of $10,975 for

Hillside Family of Agency affiliates.

The Homers for Hillside initiative in

Rochester raised $7,125. As part of this

initiative, News 8 Now, Jines Restaurant,

and Piccadilly’s Toy Shoppe donated a

total of $75 to Hillside Family of Agencies

every time a home run was hit by a

Rochester Red Wings player during the

2001 baseball season. Calvin Pickering, a

Red Wings designated hitter, hit the most

“homers” for Hillside, with 20 home runs for

the season. Crestwood Children’s Center,

Hillside Children’s Center, and Hillside Work-Scholarship

Connection will share funds raised in Rochester.

Hillside Children’s Center received $2,850 from Homers

for Hillside sponsors in Batavia to support its

programs in Genesee County. Oil Spout, Inc.,

Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co., Reinhart Enterprises,

and Turnbull Heating and Air Conditioning

each designated specific dollar amounts for

donation to Hillside Children’s Center

every time a home run was hit by a

Batavia Muckdogs player during the

2001 baseball season.

WIXT Channel 9 in Syracuse

supported Homers for Hillside through

the Auburn Doubledays team, donating

$1,000 to Hillside Children’s Center.

Also part of Homers for Hillside,

children and families had opportunities to

meet players through team-hosted clinics

and received free tickets to Red Wings,

Muckdogs, and Doubledays games.

Gala auctioneer Howard Jacobson donned many hats

during the evening as he talked about jobs for Hillside

Work-Scholarship Connection students and great buys

on auction merchandise.

Danny Wegman, Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection

Gala Host, thanks Chef David Bouley and the culinary staff,

for a meal well prepared.

“Job-Raising” for Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection

With the tastes of Chef David Bouley on the menu and the

students of the Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection in

everyone’s heart, this year’s Gala Dinner on June 22 proved to

be a great success. The 2001 Hillside Work-Scholarship

Connection (HW-SC) Gala raised $75,000 and garnered 38

new jobs for students in the program.

Hosted for the second year by Danny Wegman, one of the

major goals of this year’s Gala, outside of fundraising, was to

increase awareness of the need for employers to hire HW-SC

students. Gala auctioneer Howard Jacobson skillfully carried

that theme throughout the event as he talked to participants

about the importance of providing part-time jobs. As an

added incentive, guests who pledged new jobs received

vouchers that were redeemable that evening toward

auction merchandise.

Held at Steamboat Landing in Canandaigua, the Gala

was attended by nearly 200 business professionals from the

Rochester area.

Partnering for Our KidsCombining their efforts for the first time this year, Crestwood

and Hillside Children’s Foundations held the most successful

Wegmans Nature’s Marketplace Hike for Kids in the event’s

three-year history this September. Over 450 hikers in Buffalo

and Rochester raised over $43,000 for children and families

served by Crestwood and Hillside Children’s Centers.

As in previous years, the 2001 Wegmans Nature’s

Marketplace Hike for Kids featured a three-mile walk,

along with entertainment, food, prizes, and

guaranteed fun for all. At the Buffalo Hike,

participants enjoyed a scenic hike around

Delaware Park. Rochester hikers traveled

through Brighton neighborhoods and

Hillside Children’s Center’s Monroe

Avenue Campus. Food was provided for

hikers along both hike routes thanks to

Wegmans Nature’s Marketplace and its

gracious vendors.

With the tragic events of September

11 only two weeks in the past, hikers, staff,

and volunteers at both Hikes took time to

remember those whose lives were lost. In

addition to listening to live performances of the

national anthem, everyone wore ribbons and observed a

moment of silence before beginning the walk.

Individuals and teams that raised the most money in

pledges were given special recognition. Rochester’s top

individual was Ken Walsh, Human Resources Manager,

Hillside Family of Agencies, and the top team was comprised

of staff from the Early Childhood Center of Crestwood

Children’s Center. At the Buffalo Hike, Debbie Mower from

Hillside Children’s Center’s Wyoming Team and her husband

David were the top individuals, and Hillside Children’s

Center’s Warsaw Office staff was the top team.

Event raffles gave hikers another opportunity to take

home prizes. Newman’s Own gift baskets, provided by

Wegmans Nature’s Marketplace and Newman’s Own,

and a bicycle, were raffled off in Rochester.

Thanks to Gina Schmidt from Hillside’s

Lockport Office, Buffalo participants had the

chance to win one of over 30 gift baskets

donated by Buffalo area businesses.

Hikers were also treated to a variety

of entertainment at both locations.

University of Buffalo’s male a cappella

group the Buffalo Chips, DJ Jay Moran and

John Buccilli of WJYE, and Diann Roffe,

Hillside Champion and Olympic Medalist,

joined the Old Country Buffet mascot and a

face painter in Buffalo. In Rochester, music was

provided by Call4BackUp, a women’s a cappella

group from Nazareth College, and DJ Billy Kidd and

“Buzzy” from WBEE, while “Spikes” of the Red Wings, a face

painter, and clowns put a smile on everyone’s face! Lisa

Salvati from News 8 Now also came out to show her support.
