Director’s note:Let’s be clear: this meeting never happened.Well…it might have happened. It was “scheduled” to happen…but there’s no record of it ACTUALLY happening.

That being said, the joy in this script is that our playwright, Mark St. Germain, has given us a fantasia – a place where these bigger-than-life historic characters can wander between fact and poetic license – where they can express themselves and their truths in direct quotes and through literary allusion – without seeming false or pretentious. This meeting lets us look at these world-renowned writers in a way we might not have before. Fragile. Human. Vulnerable.

It’s 1937. It’s Hollywood. It’s an apartment villa within the plastered walls of a glamourized echo of the Garden of Allah hotel – an artist enclave with a notorious reputation – where famous actors and actresses can be themselves while avoiding the scrutinous glare of the studios’ eyes. It’s all too perfect to be perfect. And it’s here where Scott and Hem come face-to-face with their fears, their failings and their desires.
