Dennis Rader, or BTK, was nonsocial and organized. It was hard to decide which he fit under, but he leans toward nonsocial and organized. Although he was reported to be an underachieving student and had a hard time finishing college, Rader maintained a stable life with a wife and two children. He even maintained a role in the community as a scout leader for his son’s troop and was, just before his arrest, elected the president of the congressional council at his church. He maintained a steady job and relatively normal life. Upon his arrest, people from his past were shocked to hear of his crimes, as he seemed to just “blend in.” However, it is evident that he never had any close friends growing up and managed to just get by socially growing up. Regarding his upbringing, his parents were married and not abusive, although he self-reported being aroused by his mother’s spankings as a boy. His killings are somewhat organized in nature. He kills generally during the daytime and is very personal with his killings/victims. They are not things to him but rather something he needs. However, his attacks tended to be blitz or unorganized due to the fact that unexpected factors sometimes interrupted his kills- i.e. other people home/arriving home. Also, at nearly every crime scene he left behind semen and never disposes of the body at another location. He is known, however, for contacting authorities and newspapers about his kills as well as reporting them from different pay phones which signifies a more organized killer.

Souvenirs and TrophiesHis self-given nickname, BTK- Bind, Torture, Kill- tells of his method of killing or signature. He killed almost exclusively women, except for the two men from his first kill-which were victims of opportunity rather than preference. He would also leave behind semen at the crime scene beside the bound victims and often took their underwear to relive the kills as well as licenses and other valuable items in the house

Since the 1980s, Rader had been using different mediums to communicate with local authorities and media. Rader, or BTK, posted an ad that requested they communicate via floppy disk, on the condition that it could not be traced back. The authorities agreed and received a sloppy disk within a short period of time. The disk was then traced back to Rader’s church computer and DNA tests confirmed his guilt. He was arrested on February 25th, 2005. My biggest question is, who was still using a sloppy disk in 2005?

Rader’s childhood was relatively normal in regard to his upbringing. He was the oldest of four boys and was raised in a Lutheran home. Since his arrest, he has self reported odd incidents or behaviors he engaged in during his childhood. He claims his schoolwork was subpar because he was constantly day dreaming of bondage and torture throughout the school day. He was especially fond of Musketeer Annette Funicello and often fantasized about her. He has claimed that his mother’s spankings caused him to become aroused as a child. He also engaged in murdering animals and remembers the first time he saw a chicken slaughtered at a farm- and the impact that had on him.
