The Parables of Lent Throughout March we'll be focusing upon Jesus' parables. We'll do that in our Lenten services on Wednesday evenings, go into deeper study during Sunday morning adult Bible classes, and encourage family study at home using the Lenten devotional booklets available at church. Each week we'll consider and study a different parable from the Gospels. During Holy Week we'll study a different parable during Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday worship. Feb. 18 & 22 The Pharisee and the Tax Collector Luke 18:9-44 Feb. 25 & Mar. 1 The Sower and the Seed Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23 Mar. 4 & Mar. 8 The Hidden Treasure and the Priceless Pearl Matthew 13:44-46 Mar. 11 & Mar. 15 The Good Samaritan Luke 10:25-37 Mar. 18 & Mar. 22 The Workers in the Vineyard Matthew 20:1-16 Mar. 25 The Prodigal Son Luke 15:11-32 Mar. 29 (Palm Sunday) The Lost Sheep Luke 15:1-7 Apr. 2 (Holy Thursday) The Great Banquet Luke 22:14-23 Apr. 3 (Good Friday) The Landowner and Tenants Mark 15:21-39 Apr. 5 (Easter Sundayl) The Wise and Foolish Builders Mark 16:1-8 For those who have never studied the parables before, prepare to be surprised by how these stories about "earthly" things can have such importance and messages about heaven. For those who have studied the parables before, prepare to see new things and be challenged to grow and change as God's Word cuts through our pretenses and veneer to really see our spiritual need. The Sunday morning class will meet in the Auditorium each Sunday morning, beginning at 9:45 a.m. The class is open to all, so please join us! Lenten Worship As we have done in previous years, this year we will have Wednesday evening worship throughout the season of Lent. Each Wednesday we gather for dinner and fellowship at 5:45, followed by worship at 6:30. Your help is needed for the meals. If possible, please sign up to bring something to share on one (or more) of the Wednesday evenings. You may sign up on your Connection Card (during worship), at the Information Center (in the Concourse), or by calling the church office at 381-3970 ext. 10. The focus in all of the Wednesday services, as well as in all of the services during Holy Week, will be upon the Parables of Lent. (See the article above for more details.) The services are geared for all ages and include special music. We hope you'll join us and will invite your friends to join you!

Calling all Easter Egg Hunters! Faith will once again be holding an Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday. The Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled for 10:00 AM. Many of the eggs will contain non-food items, and all of the food will be peanut free. Bring your friends and neighbors! All Sunday School age kids are welcome. Kids will be divided into two groups for fairness and safety. One group will be up to age 3 and the other group will be age 4 and up. Contents of the eggs will be age appropriate. We hope to see you and your families there!    We write this having just started in our new role as the Directors of Children’s and Family Ministries. Thank you to everyone for the well wishes and support as we have prepared to assume this new role this last month or so. In particular we would like to thank Donna Kaser for all of the work she has done these last nine years in this role. As Donna has said on multiple occasions, she isn’t going anywhere! She is going to continue to write Sunday School curriculum and will write the VBS curriculum again this year. We thank her for her service, her support, and the work she will continue to do among us. In Sunday School, the younger grades (3s and 4s and Kindergarten) will be preparing for Easter as they learn about stories such as Palm Sunday, the Last Supper, Jesus washing his disciples’ feet, and Jesus’ Death and Resurrection. The children who are doing rotations will be learning about John the Baptist as he “prepares the way of the Lord” and then will study the Resurrection leading up to Easter Sunday. You can now receive text message updates and reminders from Faith Children’s and Family Ministry. To receive these updates, simply text the message @faithchild to the number 81010. God’s Blessings Carrie and Steve Ford

A special invitation for Faith members and friends to experience

“Traditional Ireland” October 4-12, 2016

As we’ve been promising and planning for the past several years, Faith Lutheran Church is combining with St. Louis Church of Pittsford for a trip to Ireland in the fall of 2016. This trip will include a wonderful mix of history, ancient historical ruins, stunning panoramic views, legendary castles and moats, and the romantic and rugged regions of lakes and bogs. We will see illuminated manuscripts, wonderful little villages, and arts and crafts. Above all, we will get to know the people, with their lively, happy Irish nature and unparalleled hospitality. Ireland will take your breath away! Some highlights will include visits to…

• Galway, including a Corrib River Cruise

• Connemara Region – known for its granite mountains, hundreds of lakes, sandy beaches on the seacoast, stone walls, small farms, thatched cottages

• Kylemore Abbey – This famous lakeside estate was built in 1867 as a romantic gift and contains lots of history and tales of romance, tragedy, and success. Since 1920, it has been home to Ireland’s only community of Benedictine nuns.

• Spectacular Burren Region, famous Cliffs of Moher, which rise over 700 feet up from the ocean and extend for over 4 miles.

• Visit a Medieval Castle – enjoy a Medieval Banquet complete with a 4 course meal, wine, and period entertainment of drama, music and song.

Page 7: FAITH NOTES - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/faithlutheranchurch5/documents/... · 2015. 2. 26. · Mark Your Calendars… Mar. 29 – Apr. 2 Flower City Work Camp Apr. 12 Sunday

• Ring of Kerry – ride on the most famous and panoramic route in Ireland and enjoy mountains, peat bogs, lakes, and magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean

• Dingle Peninsula, Killarney National Park, Muckross House

• Clonmacnoise – a great monastery founded in the 6th c. Learn about its fascinating history. It was a great center of learning, and many manuscripts, including the Annals of Tighermach (11th c.) and the Book of the Dun Cow (12th c.) were written here.

• Dublin –

o Tour of city, including famous “Doors of Dublin”, the elegant Georgian squares, and Phoenix Park

o Trinity College, which houses The Book of Kells, an 8th c. illustrated manuscript o Great shopping - Nassau Street, famous Waterford Crystal o St. Patrick’s Cathedral, which was made famous

by its former dean, Jonathan Swift (18th c.), the author of Gulliver’s Travels. This Gothic style cathedral was built in 1213 and is the largest in Ireland.

• Gala dinner and entertainment, complete with

contemporary Irish dancing

• A combined choir will perform an organ and choral concert at either St. Patrick’s Cathedral or Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin. But don’t worry; you do not need to be able to sing to join this tour. It is open to both choir members and those who simply want to take part in an amazing adventure.

Please contact Dianne Christensen ([email protected] or 381-3970 x17) if you are interested or would like more information.

The premise of the novel is this: the rotation of the earth has begun to slow, and days and nights are growing longer and longer. All the scheduled rituals of daily life are disrupted. The New York Times hails it as "a genuinely moving tale that mixes the real and surreal, the ordinary and the extra ordinary with impressive fluency and flair."
