Someone asked the great theologian, “What is the most profound thought that you know, Dr. Barth?” Here is what this deep-thinking man and brilliant theologian said, “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” Love is important. Popular culture tells us, “Love is a many splendored thing;” “All you need is love;” “Love makes the world go ‘round;” “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.” We understand that love is important but aren’t there other things that are equal to if not more important than love? According to the Bible the answer is an emphatic, “No!” Paul writes, “If I give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.” Faith without love is empty. Love is the essential element that gives meaning to all the others. Without love, wisdom, faith, even sacrifice, become unanchored and drift aimlessly in the sea of life. Everyone has February 24 – March 3, 2019, circled on their

calendar, right?? This is our week to host ChristNet next year. Even though it sounds far off, it will be coming up very quickly! The sign- up sheets will be up on January 27 but if you have questions, suggestions, new ideas etc., please let me know before then. We could really use more entertainment, games, and activities in the evenings.

The rotating shelter opened for the season the second week in October and has been at capacity since. This week (12/10/18) we have 30 individuals staying with ChristNet. We have 10 women right now, but had as many as 15 a few weeks ago. No children so far. The numbers do change very quickly.

A big thank you goes out to members of Faith who help at the Daytime Center preparing meals. Michele Partch, Leann Maxwell, Cindy Allison, Vicki Owens, Karen Johnson, Linda Talbert and Laura Hayman (hope I didn’t leave anyone out) have recently joined Jim Allison, Linda & Todd Cleaver and Mary Myers on different days during the week. The center gets many food donations and the volunteers are very creative in preparing the donations! Allison’s & Partche’s also served Thanksgiving Dinner at the Center and I hear there are plans for Christmas too.

Coming up on March 16, 2019 will be our annual Carrabba’s fundraiser! It’s always great food and a great fundraiser. Tickets for Carrabba’s will be available in early March.

I cannot say THANK YOU often enough for the support and commitment our Faith family gives to ChristNet. You are AWESOME! I wish you a peaceful, joyous holiday season filled with the love of Christ, which you generously share. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

WHAT CAN I GIVE HIM? by, Christina Rossetti

What can I give Him, Poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb.

If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part, Yet what can I give Him? Give Him my heart.

Happy New Year! My goodness, it is not even Christmas yet, and here I am wishing you all a Happy New Year and I just wrote 2019 for the first time! Christmas. Christmas beckons us to consider what gift can we each bring to the baby Jesus. Now it is a new year, full of promise and hope; a new year that beckons us to embrace the love we experience during Christmas time.

How do we do that, you may wonder. As United Methodist Women, we begin a new year with the realization that there are new mission tasks and opportunities waiting for us to delve into. Every four years, there is a National Quadrennial UMW meeting. This past year, it was held in Columbus, Ohio. At this meeting, four issues were prioritized as areas of focus for social action. That means there are four areas we need to learn about and explore ways we can have a positive influence during the next four years. These four issues are Climate Justice, Criminalization of Communities of Color, Economic Inequality, and Maternal and Child Health. Quite the task!

But wait! These are not the only areas of mission where United Methodist Women are involved. We still must work to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, clothe those who have no clothes. How are we going to accomplish all of this? We have jobs. We take care of family members. We take care of others. We are going to be so stressed! How are we really going to make a difference? Think a bit and consider these points as stated in The Purpose of United Methodist Women.

*To be a community of women *To know God *To experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ *To develop a creative and supportive community *To expand concepts of mission *To participate in global ministries

Each UMW group in each United Methodist Church is unique, not only because each woman is unique, but also each community and each congregation is unique. Over time, people, communities and churches change. Change brings new opportunities and challenges. We must remember that each woman brings hope, expectation, and anticipation as gifts, talents, and resources, as well as responsibilities, burdens, and need for fellowship. As these changes occur, we need to find new ways of working for mission that address the changing needs of our group, church, and community to keep us focused on moving toward our purpose, our vision. To move forward in 2019, we need to honor the 2018 accomplishments of United Methodist Women of Faith United Methodist Church. Look at the distribution of funds report—we are truly invested in mission! Being able to continue our financial support of local, national, and global missions is a gift. Learning about tangible needs of others, such as all of the members of Pollocksville UMC, NC whose lives were devastated by Hurricane Florence and Soaring Haiti Unlimited, and helping to meet their needs is also a gift. None of this would be possible without the time, talents, and gifts of the people of this church; not just the women, but every person of this church. Mission is inclusive. All of us working together accomplish much. God is so good! This Christmas. “What gift can I bring?” new year, “I bring my heart.” Consider joining us this New Year on the path of mission. Remember, UMW mission work isn’t just the Bazaar workshops or Executive Board meetings, but learning about needs and working together to meet those needs and make a positive difference. Mission is living with love and hope in our hearts and sharing it!

DOWNRIVER CHURCH SPORTS

LEAGUE There is Drop-in Volleyball at Hedke Elementary School on

Marion Drive on Monday(s) at 7:00 p.m. There have been enough players for two teams of four to six players and the number is growing. If interested stop by and check it out or call Kay Korns if you have questions. Addition of enough players for three teams would be good. Teams could play one or two matches each week. A Three-on-Three basketball league will start in February. They’ll play Thursday evenings at

Anderson Elementary on Harrison or Hedke school. Justin Bommer represented Faith UMC last year. See Justin or contact Rob McWilliams at 313-805-9284 for additional details. Anyone interested in playing Wallyball at Zodiac on Toledo Dix in Southgate should contact Kay Korns, 671-0005. Our Church Bowling League is in progress with four teams. They bowl at 10-Pins of Trenton every other Sunday at 4 P.M. Season will end in March. Substitute bowlers are needed at times. Call Kay Korns if you would like to be put on the substitute list.

The United Methodist

District Prayer Breakfast

will be held on February 9

at Redford Aldersgate.

RECYCLING at FAITH Whether throwing back the star fish or the turtles into the sea it is even that one you save that counts. Just taking

your newspapers, magazines, light weight cardboard or other paper products to the dumpster type containers at the schools makes a bit less to go into landfills. If enough people would reuse, return, recycle and consider packaging when they buy it could make a big difference. I cannot believe how many cases of bottled water are paid for and carried out of the grocery stores. White paper and corrugated cardboard will soon be delivered to the recycle center in Taylor. Drop your white paper off at church. If you have collected corrugated cardboard let Kay Korns know; she will let you know the day and time to have it at church.

Volunteers Needed to Help at St. Phillip’s Food Pantry

We are looking for people to help at the St. Phillip’s Food Pantry on Wednesdays, from 10:45 - 1:00 during the months of January and February. There will be a sign-up sheet in the corner lobby for those who are interested. We need 2 volunteers each week and you do not need to commit for an entire month

St. Phillip’s Food Pantry serves between 40 and 60 clients (individuals and families) each week. At the Food Pantry, clients are able to select food items that they know they will use, instead of receiving a generic box of food. The Food Pantry is also the Temporary Food Assistance Program site for the City of Trenton and once a month there is a “commodities day” when foods from the U.S. Department of Agriculture are distributed.

Volunteers work one-on-one with clients as they select their food items, place these items in bags and boxes in a shopping cart and help them load the groceries into their cars. This volunteer opportunity does require standing, walking and some lifting. Unlike the St. Timothy’s Food Pantry, we will not be involved in stocking or pre-packing boxes of food.

If you would like further information on this, please contact either

Sue or Ray Yee at 734-676-2731.

FAITHFUL READERS will meet on Tuesday, January 15 at 11 A.M. at Panera Bread to discuss the book, Having Our Say by The Delaney Sisters.

January 2019 “In the world you shall have trouble but take

heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

It’s wonderful that we can celebrate the birth of our Savior! That we know the reason for this season of celebration; the most wonderful gift our God could ever give us! Through Christ’s birth and death our sins will be forgiven, that’s why he’s called the Savior. Remember the reason for the season, and lean on the promises of God. It’s through faith, the belief in and acceptance of this gift we will have everlasting life!

Our memory verse for December was perfect for the many, many days of busyness preparing for Christmas! One version, my favorite is “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it!” Psalm 118:24 I hope you took the time to look it up, read it, and store it in your hearts.

So, now for the New Year; we may be carrying some of the same burdens, troubles and concerns with us from the old year to the next. One way you can calm your heart and mind is to lean on God’s promises. Thus, the verse for January I felt was appropriate for not only you…but for me as well! “In the world you shall have trouble but take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

My hope for you and your families this New Year 2019; is that you find joy in whatever you decide to do. That you try to bring joy to someone else every day,

and that you trust and believe in the promises of God.

Our calendar for January so far is light. I haven’t received any responses of interest for the U-Nite 2019 event January 11-12…so I guess we aren’t going. That’s okay, there’s always other events we can do!

Last year we made crockpot casserole breakfasts, brought fruit, muffins, milk and juice to serve to the neighborhood people in need. Let’s do this again this January 2019. I have planned for us to go to Redford Brightmoor Initiative on Saturday, January 26. I am hopeful this date works for you.

Blessings to you & yours You crown the year with

Your goodness… PSALM 65:11

Dearest Faith UMC Family, As our Father in the Faith, John Wesley said, “my heart Is strangely warmed” by all your gracious remembrances of cards, food, flowers, emails, texts, and especially prayers as I continue to convalesce from my recent shoulder surgery. I am especially grateful for your understanding that Doug is my primary care giver. I am keeping him very busy! May God continue to bless you and our congregation. In Christmas Love, Sharon Ralston
