Divine Service Sunday – 8:15 & 10:45 AM

OCTOBER 27, 2019 TWENTIETH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

WELCOME TO PEACE! – The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone.

PARENT’S ROOM A room is available if your little one needs a moment. It is the first room on the right as you walk into the church building. Sound and video are piped into the room to enable you to hear and see the service. Changing tables are in both restrooms.

FACILITIES Restrooms are located down the hall and on the right side.

An induction loop is provided for the benefit of hearing aid users. To use, please switch your hearing aid to “T.”

BEFORE WORSHIP As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer:

PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty God, in Your bountiful goodness keep us safe from every evil of body and soul. Make us ready, with cheerful hearts, to do whatever pleases You; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

THE DIVINE SERVICE WITH HOLY COMMUNION Rite 1, p. 41

OPENING PRAYER P: O Lord, our Maker, Redeemer, and Comforter, we are assembled in Your presence

to hear Your holy Word. We pray You to open our hearts by Your Holy Spirit, that through the preaching of Your Word we may be taught to repent of our sins, to believe on Jesus in life and death, and to grow day by day in grace and holiness. Hear us for Christ’s sake. Amen.

HYMN #60 “O BLESS THE LORD, MY SOUL”

THE CONFESSION OF SIN P: Let us bow before the Lord and confess our sins. Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we

are by nature sinful and unclean, and that we have sinned against You by thought, word and deed. Therefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace, for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ.

C: O most merciful God, You have given Your only-begotten Son to die for us: have mercy upon us, and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us a true knowledge of You, and of Your will and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

4

THE ABSOLUTION P: Lift up your hearts unto God!

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us, and has given His only Son to die for us, and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To all who believe on His name He gives power to become the children of God, and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He who believes and is baptized will be saved. Grant this, Lord, unto us all. Amen.

THE SALUTATION

THE COLLECT P: Let us pray…one God, now and forever.

THE LESSON – HABAKKUK 1:1-3, 2:1-4 1The threatening oracle which the prophet Habakkuk saw.

2How long, LORD, must I cry for help, but you do not listen? I call out to you, “Violence!” but you do not save! 3Why do you cause me to see injustice? Why do you overlook misery?

Page 7: FAITH CAN DO THE IMPOSSIBLEpeacemankato.com/download/2019bulletins/191027... · have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that

7

Devastation and violence confront me. There is strife, and tensions rise. 4For this reason the law has become powerless. Justice is never carried out. In fact, the wicked overwhelm the righteous so that justice is perverted. 2:1I will stand at my watch post and station myself on the city wall. I will look

to see what he will say to me, and what answer he will give to my complaint. 2Then the LORD answered me. He said:

Record the vision and write it plainly on tablets so that a herald may run with it.

3Indeed, the vision is waiting for the appointed time. It longs for fulfillment and will not prove false. If it seems slow in coming, wait for it, because it will certainly come and will not be delayed.

4Look, his soul is puffed up and is not righteous within him,—but the righteous one will live by his faith.

THE EPISTLE – 2 TIMOTHY 1:3-14 3I thank God, whom I serve with a clean conscience as my ancestors did, as I

constantly remember you in my prayers night and day. 4When I remember your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. 5I remember your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am convinced that it also lives in you.

6For this reason I am reminding you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7For God did not give us a timid spirit, but a spirit of power and love and sound judgment. 8So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Instead, join with me in suffering for the gospel while relying on the power of God. 9He saved us and called us with a holy calling, not because of our works, but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, 10and it has now been revealed through the appearance of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 11For this gospel I was appointed a herald, apostle, and teacher of the Gentiles, 12and that is why I am suffering these things. But I am not ashamed, because I know the one in whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day.

13Hold fast to the pattern of sound words that you heard from me, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. 14Through the Holy Spirit, who lives in us, guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you.

THE HOLY GOSPEL – LUKE 17:1-10 P: The Holy Gospel for the Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost is written in the 17th

chapter of the Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning at the 1st verse.

1Jesus said to his disciples, “Temptations to sin are sure to come, but woe to the one through whom they come! 2It would be better for that person if a millstone would be hung around his neck and he would be thrown into the sea than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. 3Watch yourselves.

“If your brother sins, rebuke him. If he repents, forgive him. 4Even if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times returns to you and says, ‘I repent,’ forgive him.”

5The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” 6The Lord said, “If you had faith like a mustard seed, you could tell this mulberry

tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. 7Which one of you who has a servant plowing or taking care of sheep will say to him when he comes in from the field, ‘Come at once and recline at the table’? 8Won’t the master tell him instead, ‘Prepare my supper, and after you are properly dressed, serve me while I eat and drink. After that you may eat and drink’? 9He does not thank the servant because he did what he was commanded to do, does he? 10So also you, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants. We have only done what we were supposed to do.’”

THE CREED P: Let us confess our holy faith in the words of the Nicene Creed:

C: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,

Begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, Begotten, not made, Being of one substance with the Father, By Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; And He shall come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, Who spoke by the Prophets. And I believe one holy Christian and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, And I look for the Resurrection of the dead and the Life of the world to come.

THE SERMON – LUKE 17:1-10 FAITH CAN DO THE IMPOSSIBLE

THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

THE APOSTOLIC BENEDICTION P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy

Spirit be with you all.

THE OFFERING The members of Peace Lutheran Congregation have joined together to do the Lord’s work in this community and around the world. Visitors need not feel obligated to participate in this offering which supports our ministry.

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates

of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.” (Malachi 3:10)

THE SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION

Peace Lutheran Church practices close communion. We ask that only members of the ELS and WELS partake of the Sacrament today. Visitors, please speak to the Pastor about receiving the Sacrament in the future.

THE PREFACE P: The Lord be with you.

P: Lift up your hearts unto the Lord.

Page 12: FAITH CAN DO THE IMPOSSIBLEpeacemankato.com/download/2019bulletins/191027... · have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that

12

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.

THE PROPER PREFACE AND SANCTUS P: It is truly good, right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give

thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, Who with Your only begotten Son and the Holy Spirit are one God, one Lord. In the confession of the only true God we worship the Trinity in person and the Unity in substance, of majesty co-equal. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

THE SANCTUS (HOLY, HOLY, HOLY)

13

THE EXHORTATION P: Dear friends in Christ! In order that you may receive this holy Sacrament worthily,

it is good that you consider what you must now believe and do. From the words of Christ; “This is My body, which is given for you; this is My blood which is shed for you for the remission of sins” you should believe that Jesus Christ is Himself present with His body and blood, as the words declare.

From Christ’s words “for the remission of sins” you should believe that Jesus Christ bestows upon you His body and blood to confirm unto you the forgiveness of all your sins.

And finally, you should do as Christ commands you when He says “Take, eat; drink of it, all of you,” and “this do in remembrance of Me.”

If you believe these words of Christ, and do as He therein has commanded, then you have rightly examined yourselves and may worthily eat Christ’s body and drink His blood for the forgiveness of all your sins.

You should also unite in giving thanks to Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for so great a gift, and should love one another with a pure heart, and thus with the whole Christian Church have comfort and joy in Christ our Lord. To this end may God the Father grant you His grace; through the same, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

14

THE LORD’S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy

will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.

THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread and

when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying: “Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying: “Drink of it all of you; this cup is the New Testament in My blood, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins. This do as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
