Imagine the exuberant welcome as Jesus entered Jerusalem. People laid branches and cloaks on the road before Him while shouting “Hosanna”—an expression of adoration and praise. The Kingdom seemed very near at hand!

Through Holy Scripture, we proceed to the Last Supper. Jesus washed the feet of the Disciples, as a servant would do. Bread and wine blessed and shared became the first Eucharistic meal. Still, the Disciples’ understanding remained sketchy.

For artists, charcoal remains a forgiving medium for drawing, whether they use a rubber putty eraser or give bread a try. Shaping a piece of bread into the eraser

size needed and pressing it onto a drawing lifts the charcoal. The white bread absorbs unwanted blackness.

Jesus, life-giving Bread, gave His Body and Blood for us. He lifts the blackness of sin from us and invites us to picture His mercy.

As events unfold during the Triduum that begins on the evening of Holy Thursday and continues through Easter, we follow Jesus from His

Passion to Resurrection. We see His agonized

prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. Pontius Pilate recognizes the envy of Jesus’ persecutors and wants to release Him. The crowd wants our Savior and King crucified.

Jesus came to fulfill what Mosaic law and the prophets had taught. Scribes and Pharisees drew the line at obeying hundreds of burdensome rules. In the artistry of God’s design, Jesus wants us to think along the simple lines of doing things with love.

Although an artist sacrifices a charcoal design by painting over it, a vibrant picture emerges. Jesus sacrificed Himself on the Cross so that the Resurrection would color our lives with Easter hope.

Fr. Tony ScannellChaplain

During His lifetime on Earth, Jesus rose to every occasion, healing, helping, serving, forgiving, understanding, and loving. On Easter, we celebrate the Resurrection—our hope of eternal life as we follow His example.

Your gift to Heart of the Nation during the Easter Joy Fund Drive will share the Lord’s love far and wide. “When our lives change in ways that prevent us from going to church, the cross we bear can become heavy indeed,” said Fr. Mark Payne, chaplain for Heart of the Nation. “Your generosity will lighten the burden for many as we celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord and the overflowing joy of the whole liturgical season of Easter.”

Artist with a Good EraserArt students and master artists use charcoal for sketching what they plan to

fill in with paint. Before the days of rubber erasers, they could change a design by erasing with a bit of bread. As we reflect on the events of Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter, we can picture God’s merciful plan for our salvation taking shape through Jesus, the Bread of Life.

“Today we had to stay home from Mass. We were trying to find something encouraging to watch on TV and saw your Mass. Praise be to God!”

~James and Kryssi

“I look forward to your Sunday Mass and always watch. I am a Marine Corps vet and a 23-year vet of law enforcement. My Catholic faith always carried me through tough times.”

~Bob

“I am in a nursing home. I am only 59 but can’t walk. My sister is 5 hours away, so you are like family.”

~Patrick

Sunday of Divine MercyJesus appeared to St. Faustina Kowalska during her lifetime, revealing

His desire for a special occasion of Divine Mercy. The Lord invited the faithful to seek forgiveness of punishment and promised great mercy at the hour of death for anyone who has prayed a Novena centered on the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.

Seeking an IndulgenceEven when God forgives sin, the need for punishment

or pardon (indulgence) remains. An indulgence eliminates all or part of the purification needed on Earth or in purgatory.

To seek a partial indulgence on Divine Mercy Sunday, while free from mortal sin, tell the Lord that you desire an indulgence for yourself or a soul in purgatory. Pray with a contrite heart, “Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!” before the Divine Mercy image of Jesus with rays coming from His heart.

You can only seek a full indulgence through additional observances made with complete detachment from sin—a difficult standard. For the homebound, the additional observances include: (a) an Our Father and the Creed; (b) uniting yourself spiritually with those seeking indulgence in the usual way at church; (c) an offering of a prayer, your sufferings, and hardships to the merciful Lord; (d) resolve to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist as soon as possible; and (e) prayers, such as an Our Father and Hail Mary, for the Pope’s intentions.

Novena: The Chaplet (“Little Rosary”) To pray a chaplet of Divine Mercy, use this sequence of prayers:• Three times: “O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the

Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You!”;• Our Father, Hail Mary, and the Apostles’ Creed;• On the single bead of five rosary decades: “Eternal Father, I offer

You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world”;

• On ten beads of each rosary decade: “For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world”;

• Three times: “Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Begin the novena on Good Friday. On consecutive days, pray the chaplet for these intentions: 1) all mankind; 2) souls of priests and religious; 3) all devout and faithful souls, 4) those who do not know or believe in God; 5) souls of those who have separated themselves from His Church; 6) meek and humble souls, and the souls of little children; 7) souls who especially venerate and glorify His mercy; 8) souls in purgatory; and 9) “lukewarm” souls.

Emmaus PrayerRisen Lord Jesus,

Who met two travelers on the road, contemplating the Cross and empty tomb, When I feel disappointment, please meet me and open my heart to Your Word.

Risen Lord,

Who stayed alongside the travelers, for sorrow prevented them from seeing, When I fail to understand, please prepare me as I continue seeking.

Loving Savior,

Who blessed and broke bread at the table and in that grace-filled moment became known, Please help me to recognize the ways that unlimited love from You overflows. Amen.

Easter Prayer Lord Jesus, Risen Savior,

To You I offer joyful praise For the compassion that You give. Grateful prayer to You I raise, Who have shown me how to live.

In faith, I want to follow You, Although I sometimes stumble. May love guide all that I pursue— Your love, Savior most humble.

You know without my voicing Every blessing, dream, and care. With Easter hope and rejoicing, I come to You in thankful prayer.
