Standard B: Literature and Culture
Students will use reading, listening, and viewing strategies to experience, understand, and appreciateliterature and culture.
Performance Indicators: 1, 31. Understand the basic plot of simple stories.
3. Identify differences and similarities in story elements (e.g., plot, setting, characters, conflictresolution) in works from various cultures.
Assessment Summary:
Students listen to or read two versions of the same fairy tale and complete a story map for each version.Students then use a graphic organizer to identify similarities and differences in the two versions. The
teacher may need to identify the country the fairy tale originated from if that is not obviously stated inthe book or story. This may be done as part of the introduction to the fairy tale prior to reading it, or
after reading, the country of origin may be identified through a class discussion.
Materials and Resources:Two or more versions of the same fairy tale See list of titles provided

Suggestions for Prior Instruction:
Students should have received instruction regarding characteristics of fairy tales and vocabulary wordscommon to fairy tales. A list is provided below.
Characteristics of Fairy Tales:
Are fantasy
Usually end happily
Were handed down from generation to generation by word of mouth before being written down.
Frequently begin with Once upon a time... or Long, long ago Present good versus evil themes
Include heroes/heroines
Include characters who have problems
Depict hopeless/unhappy situations
Have problems solved with magic and/or patience
