Fairy Tales
What makes up fairly tales?
The Rule of Three
• Generally 3 characters– Goldilocks and the 3 Bears– The 3 Little Pigs– The 3 Billy Goats Gruff
• Often times there are 3 wishes• Often 3 tasks that a prince of princess must
perform to find true love• Sayings repeated 3 times
– I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house down
Magical or Animal Helpers
• Examples of animals– Elderly person– Talking Frog– Fairy Godmother– A Swan, ants, birds, owls, etc…
• Sometimes not always helping magical– Witches, fairies, mermaids, unicorns, trolls,
gnomes, dragons
Magical Gifts
• A special mirror that allows you to see your hearts or desires
• Table that sets itself
• Goose laying golden eggs
• Magical pouches
Trials that Test
• Going to seek out a treasure
• Learning the answer to a riddle
• Spinning straw into gold
• Breaking through a forest to find a sleeping princess
Good and Bad Choices
• Helpless people or creatures to be kind to• Opportunities to tell the truth or lie, cheat or be
honest; betray the innocent• A related idea: One’s inside matches one’s
outside (a beautiful nature manifests itself in a beautiful exterior, an attractive appearance; an ugly nature shows itself in an ugly appearance)
• If someone’s inside and outside are at odds, by the end of the tale the two are reconciled -“Beauty and the Beast”
• Notice the elemental justice of the tales
Now on to Cinderella
• You are going to get into a group of 3, or 4 people.
• Together you will fill out the chart and you need to read all the stories.
