Admissions to our NICU include infants born at 30 weeks gestation and above, newborn infants who may require extra monitoring or care after delivery and infants who are transferred to us from other hospitals so families can be closer to their own home while their little one continues to heal and grow .

Baby’s are our business! Neonatal Nurse Practitioners working in collaboration with the neonatologist from the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children's Hospital and University of Minnesota Physicians are available 24/7 to monitor and care for your baby(s).

Working in collaboration with our Neonatologists, Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, and your family's baby doctor our highly skilled nursing staff provide exceptional, quality care to your baby(s).

Additional care team members may include lactation consultants, social workers, respiratory therapists, speech therapists, physical therapists and other medical or surgical specialists.

Fairview Southdales NICU uses state of the art equipment to monitor your baby’s vital signs, help your baby breathe (ventilator-breathing machine) and to keep your baby warm. Our NICU has a special area where staff are able to more closely monitor critically ill infants.

Our NICU has 18 individual rooms where families are able to stay with their baby(s).

Our goal is to providing developmentally supportive care for your baby. Each room has many lighting options to accommodate the needs of the staff, your baby and your family.

Each individual room has special ceiling tiles that help keep the noise level in the room within a therapeutic level to enhance a quiet, healing environment.

In supporting developmental care, our rooms with windows have two different type of shades to control the amount of sunlight shining into a room; one is a light filtering shade and the other is a room darkening shade.

Our individual rooms are specifically designed with one side for the nursing staff and equipment to care for your baby and the other is for families and your belongings.

Families are a very important member of your baby’s care team. For your comfort each room has a recliner-rocker in addition to a chair that pulls out into a bed where family members can rest and sleep.

To provide extra comfort, a private bathroom and shower is available next to the unit for family use. All meals are provided to one family member each day.

We have one room where twins and their family members can stay in the same room. Another area of the NICU has space where triplets and their family members can stay close to each other.

The NICU at Fairview Southdale Hospital is safe and secure. The entrance to the NICU is accessible only to those staff and family members who have electronic card access to unlock the doors.
