The early Brethren were serious students of the Bible. They lived in a time when most people re- lied on priests to tell them what God said in His Word. They wanted to read for themselves to learn what God wanted them to be. But the question arose, Who really knew enough of Gods heart to interpret the scriptures for the others to understand? As pastor Bernie Fuska says, Brethren believe that we should seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit as we read the Scriptures. One of the best ways that happens is in the context of the faith commu- nity. We listen to each other and learn from each other. That is why we place such an emphasis on group Bible study and prayer as well as worship. The whole Bible is important to Brethren as the infallible and authoritative guide for faith and prac- tice. Since the Bible is the Word of God, obedience to the biblical com- mands is obedience to God. When early Brethren determined to put into practice what they read, their choice made them societal out- casts and subject to persecution. Yet they were not swayed. Moses told the Israelites: Take to heart all the words I have sol- emnly declared to you this day, so that you may command your chil- dren to obey carefully all of them. They are not just idle words for you—they are your life(Deuteronomy 32:46-47). To follow Jesus involves our entire lives. We learn more completely where Jesus leads us when we study the Bible together in communi- ty. Let us commit ourselves to study together this year. Let us take up the goal of the early Brethren to be completely obedient to what we read in Scripture as we Follow Jesus. Let us continue to be People of the Book,as the early Brethren were called. Following Jesus in Bible Study by Our Pastoral Team The idea to Follow Jesus is at the heart of true belief, and knowing where he leads us can only happen as we learn about his life and his teaching. The early Brethren were serious students of the Bible. They lived in a time when most people re-lied on priests to tell them what God said in His Word. They wanted to read for themselves to learn what God wanted them to be. But the question arose, “Who really knew enough of God’s heart to interpret the scriptures for the others to understand?” As pastor Bernie Fuska says, “Brethren believe that we should seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit as we read the Scriptures. One of the best ways that happens is in the context of the faith commu-nity. We listen to each other and learn from each other. That is why we place such an emphasis on group Bible study and prayer as well as worship.” The whole Bible is important to Brethren as the infallible and authoritative guide for faith and prac-

tice. Since the Bible is the Word of God, obedience to the biblical com-mands is obedience to God. When early Brethren determined to put into practice what they read, their choice made them societal out-casts and subject to persecution. Yet they were not swayed. Moses told the Israelites: “Take to heart all the words I have sol-emnly declared to you this day, so that you may command your chil-dren to obey carefully all of them.

They are not just idle words for

you—they are your life” (Deuteronomy 32:46-47). To follow Jesus involves our entire lives. We learn more completely where Jesus leads us when we study the Bible together in communi-ty. Let us commit ourselves to study together this year. Let us take up the goal of the early Brethren to be completely obedient to what we read in Scripture as we Follow Jesus. Let us continue to be “People of the Book,” as the early Brethren were called.

If you have spools of thread that you

no longer have use, it is needed by those sewing the diapers for Haiti. Any color will be welcome! If you’d

like to drop a spool of ‘good quality’ white thread

into your shopping cart next time you’re in town, that would be helpful too. The average spool of thread sews between 12—15 diapers, and over 900 diapers

have been sewn this fall and winter. There are 500 more to go.

    Leadership Team Summary

One of the projects of the Leader-ship Team has been the cross that has been created to go up on the church. Ashley Brinegar found Justin Long of Long’s Scrap Art in Centerville to create the cross. Now it is awaiting powder coating by Mr Inman.

Biographies to Inspire When Peter Keyser, Jr. was a young man in the 1780’s, he was put to work grinding bark for this father’s tannery. Eager to learn the scriptures, he placed a shelf over his work on which he placed an open Bible. So he began his practice of memorizing long sections of the Bible. Over a period of years, he completely memorized the New Testa-ment and major portions of the Old Testament. Later in life Keyser was completely blind, but blindness was no handicap for this Breth-ren preacher could announce a chapter and repeat it from memory without missing a word. People who knew him often said that if the scriptures were destroyed by accident, Peter Keyser could replace them from memory. (Heart, Soul & Mind, p. 9)

Christopher Sauer printed a newspaper, a religious magazine, and an almanac for the German people in the American Colonies in the 1700’s. He produced nearly everything that went into his printing. He had his own paper mill. He manufactured his own ink and part of the type. He furnished his own binding. He did all this without charging more than he thought the German colonists could pay. But his greatest work was the printing of the first German Bible in America. This he did with a hand press. Only four pages could be printed at one time. More than a year of hard work was necessary to complete it. After it was finished, on a hot July night, the great man gathered his workmen about him, folded his arms, lifted his eyes to heaven, and exclaimed, “Thank God, it is finished.” He saw to it that even the poorest German might own a Bible. His motto posted over his printing press said, “To the honor of God and my neighbor’s good.” (Heart, Soul, & Mind p. 3)
