Stock up on convenient produce
What’s healthier than munching on fresh fruits and veggies?
And when the weather is cold, fresh produce can really hit the
spot, but if you don’t have it on hand, you’re more tempted to
hit -the vending machine. At the end of the weekend, cut up a
plentiful supply of veggies and fruit to bring with you on
Monday to store in the break-room fridge. That way when
hunger pangs strike, you have a quick snack that’s easy to grab
and go, and you always have a wholesome side on days you
bring in leftovers or a basic sandwich.

ORANGE-GINGER
BABY BACK RIBS
INGREDIENTS:
5 pounds baby back ribs
SAUCE:
1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup hoisin sauce
4 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons grainy mustard
3 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons orange juice
2 tablespoons Asian chili sauce
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
4 c loves garlic , minced
1 tablespoon ginger
Grated zest of an orange
Salt and pepper
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat the grill to medium and turn dow n to low. Prepare ribs for grilling by removing the membrane from the underside of the ribs. Prepare several foil envelopes and place 2 strips of r ibs into each envelope, w ith 1/4 cup of w ater and seal tightly. Cook for 2 to 21/2 hours on low (300* F) w ith the lid c losed. Check the thermometer on the front of the grill lid frequently and adjust the c ooking temperature accordingly. This may require turning one or tw o burners off and cooking indirectly.
To prepare the sauce: Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and set aside until the ribs are ready to remove from the foil. Gently heat the sauce on the side burner for 10 to 15 minutes before using.
Carefully remove the ribs from the foil and place on grids. Baste generously w ith sauce, and grill for 10 minutes per side, leaving the lid open, turning several times, and basting w ith sauce after each turn.
Heat remaining sauce to a boil and then allow it to simmer for 5 to 10 minutes. Serve on the side as a dipping sauce.

Will a boycott of this year’s Oscars make Hollywood more diverse?
Yes, it will definitely help.
It all depends on who boycotts the event.
It’s unnecessary. The Academy is working to diversify.
No. Movie studios need to promote movies with minorities.

Perinton Volunteer Ambulance Corps Educates Chamber on Tax Dollar Use
The Perinton Volunteer Ambulance Corps hosted an event for the Fairport-Perinton Chamber. Ambulance President Jon LeRoy shared the organization’s history and what tax dollars are doing for community residents.
The Perinton Volunteer Ambulance Corps was founded 50 years ago on April 30, 1965. It began as a project for the Lions Club, but became a part-time, volunteer based service on September 1 of that year. They provided basic life-support service for the residents of the Village of Fairport and the Town of Perinton. In the beginning, the service was only available evenings and weekends, but they expanded into a full 24/7 service by the late 1970s. They maintained 100% all-volunteer crew coverage for 20 years.
With the new millennium, availability of volunteers dropped while call volume increased, which led to the adjustment in staffing in 2011. The Corps became a “combination service” which meant that they operated with volunteers as well as hourly personnel. This allowed them to keep pace with the community, and better serve their needs.
The Perinton Volunteer Ambulance Corps currently operates with a fleet of 4 ambulances, a first response vehicle, and an incident report trailer. They are located at 1400 Turk Hill Road, adjacent to the Town Hall. In addition to emergency response, the Corps offers a loan cupboard stocked with walkers, wheelchairs, crutches, and canes. They also offer free blood pressure checks to anyone who stops in, and File of Life emergency information cards, which are available at their quarters, events they staff, and certain pharmacies around town. In
addition, they sponsor an Explorer Post through the Boy Scouts of America, provide scholarships to high school seniors who are pursuing health-related studies in college, and sponsor CPR and First Aid training to Fairport High School students through a local American Heart Association training center.
Jon shared with the Chamber that tax dollars help subsidize the cost of ambulance service, reducing out-of-pocket user expenses.
Ellen Reynolds of Aflac and Event Coordinator on the Chamber Board reflected on this service to our community, “We take this type of service for granted until we find ourselves in need. It is comforting to know in advance that financial help will be forthcoming if the need arises for emergency transportation care. The Chamber members in attendance are now more aware of services offered by the Perinton Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Chamber events hosted at member locations are for that purpose – exposure throughout our community.”

STAY SAFE AND WARM DURING W INTER W ORKOUTS
Wear appropriate headgear. For years, many people subscribed to the conventional w isdom that suggested people lose 40 to 45 percent of their body heat through their heads. But in 2008, researchers at Indiana University debunked that myth, suggesting that if humans lost that much heat through their heads, then they w ould be just as cold w hen going outside w ithout a hat on as they w ould be if they left home w ithout w earing any pants. But w earing headgear w hen exerc ising outdoors is still a good idea, as the head is more sensitive to changes in temperature than many other areas of the body. A w ool hat you can pull dow n over your ears can protect them from getting too cold. Athletes may also w ant to consider ski masks or other fac ial covers that can protect their faces w hen w inter w inds are how ling.

Preparing for hospice care Sometimes patients succumb to a disease, in spite of the
best treatments and support. When the time comes for a family to confront a loved one’s declining health, hospice care can be a dignified way to make that person’s final days as comforting as possible.
Hospice is a type of care designed to make the final moments of a person’s life as pain-free and manageable as possible. It can take place in a medical facility, but very often hospice care occurs at home or wherever the ill person feels most comfortable.
Hospice care is usually the last step when all other options have been exhausted. Making the decision to move a loved one to hospice care can be an emotionally wrenching time. Decisions such as these may be better made at a time in a person’s life when he or she is not sick. That is why living wills that spell out details for end-of-life care can be quite valuable. Decisions are made with a level head and not wrought with emotions. Such living wills also can take the pressure off of family members who may not feel comfortable making such decisions on their own or in concert with relatives.
Hospice is a type of care and a philosophy that focuses on the palliative care of terminally ill patients. Rather than providing medication to try to treat the illness, medicine is offered to make a person more comfortable and remove any pain. Psychological therapy may also be offered to help the person come to terms with the end of life. Although hospice is a concept that has gradually evolved since the 11th century, the principles of modern hospice care can trace their roots to the 1950s and Dame Cicely Saunders, a nurse and social worker who is known as the creator of the hospice movement.
If hospice care is outlined in a dying person’s living will or expressed wishes, there are some guidelines that can be followed by the sick individual.
• Visit various medical care centers to see if away-from- home options provide the care and environment you desire. Be sure to establish what type of hospice care you prefer. This may
include care within a nursing home or hospital, or in the comfort of your own home.
• Sign a medical durable power of attorney. This signed document gives authority to an adult age 18 or older, who then has the right to make necessary medical and healthcare decisions for you in the event you become incapacitated.
• Clearly indicate your wishes regarding resuscitation. A signed document may alert emergency healthcare personnel or others of your wishes not to be resuscitated. This document must be signed by you and a doctor and witnessed by others.
• Decide on the duration of care. Hospice care generally lasts six months. This enables a long stretch of palliative care. Should you live beyond the time period, hospice care can continue. Studies have shown that patients who receive hospice care for at least 30 to 60 days gain greater benefit than those who are placed in hospice only in their final days.
• Investigate financial options for hospice. Medicare and Medicaid provide hospice coverage in 44 states. Many private insurance plans have a hospice benefit as well. Understand how payment is made to figure out if private funding will be necessary.
Not all hospice programs are the same. Certain core models of care are followed by many hospice facilities, but options vary. Hospice can provide comfort in a person’s final days and help sufferers better enjoy life and time spent with loved ones in these last days.
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Feb. 3, 1998, a U.S. Marine jet flying low over the town of Cavalese in the Italian Alps severs a ski-lift cable, sending a tram crashing 250 feet to the ground and killing 20 people. The pilot and navigator destroyed a videotape that had recorded their flight. They were court-martialed for obstruction of justice and dismissed from the Marines.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Can Heart Surgery Cause Hot Flashes? DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had hot flashes, similar to those experienced by post-menopausal women, ever since my coronary bypass in 1990. I can be sitting quietly in a chair reading or at my computer, and suddenly I find myself dripping with perspiration. I also have had panic attacks, with increased heart rate and other physical symptoms. A few years ago, a 24-hour EKG showed heart- rhythm irregularities and that my heart stopped briefly while asleep.
If these idiosyncrasies of my autonomic nervous system are a consequence of my time on the heart-lung machine for the bypass, I’m not complaining -- just curious. You said that studies have been done on almost everything. Is this one? -- W.S.B.
ANSWER: I found that a lot of people complain of similar symptoms. I also found that indeed, the autonomic nervous system (the part of the nervous system that regulates temperature, sweat, blood pressure and many other critical aspects of body function without our being consciously aware of it) can be adversely affected by cardiac surgery. Some authors have suggested that the autonomic nervous system changes are one mechanism by which people are more likely to have depression after cardiac surgery. I found several possible explanations why the ANS changes with bypass surgery, but no clear consensus.
I would want to be sure that there are no other causes of these symptoms. It sounds like you have had an extensive evaluation, but I certainly would be concerned about a sudden fast heart rhythm, such as atrial fibrillation.
The booklet on abnormal heart rhythms explains atrial fibrillation and the more common heart rhythm disturbances in greater detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 107W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.
***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered a long time with GERD. I was diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus, a precancerous disease. My doctor recommended a procedure called a Nissen fundoplication. Since the procedure, I have not had heartburn again. I would do it again, after what I went through. I get an endoscopy every two years to keep an eye on my disease. -- G.D.B.
ANSWER: Barrett’s esophagus is a complication of longstanding reflux. It is diagnosed when the lining of the esophagus starts to look like the lining of the stomach. Barrett’s esophagus can progress to cancer of the esophagus. About 0.2 percent of those with Barrett’s per year will develop cancer, which sounds low, but if you live with the condition for 25 years, that’s about a 5 percent risk.
Surgery for reflux disease is done only rarely. However, it is very effective (85 percent to 90 percent). The most common reason to consider surgery is inadequate relief from medications and lifestyle changes. However, severe erosions from acid in the esophagus, inability to take medications, a stricture (partial closure) of the esophagus and Barrett’s esophagus are all reasons to consider surgery. Surgery appears to reduce the risk of cancer more than other treatments.

Remodeling the Bathroom
Bathroom remodels are the most popular remodeling
projects because they have a high return on investment.
When you’re ready to sell your house, renovating the
bathroom typically has a return of 62 percent. A low-cost way
to modernize the bathroom is installing new faucets. Sleek,
contemporary pieces can add instant luxury.
Another idea for modernizing the bathroom is to add
additional light sources. Bringing in more light will open up the
space and make your bathroom come to life. Adding the right
lighting can set the tone for a spa-like atmosphere. One way to
do this, w ithout breaking your budget, is by simply replacing
the light fixtures. Add a modern touch to your bath with
dramatic choices like chandeliers and sconces.

Board Games Recent research has acknowledged
the significant benefits that board games have, not only on children’s cognitive development and their brain’s motor functions, but also on important life skills such as patience, cooperation, concentration, teamwork and perseverance.
“We find that game play enhances many cognitive functions, including visual discrimination, visual span, visual processing speed, visual-motor integration and visual sustained attention,” says Jason Pine, president and founder of the national after-school program Sharp as a Tack. “It is astounding how much progress each student makes in terms of cognitive processing speed in just one session! You can see the transformation in their eyes and body language.”

The Memorial Day
Detachment # 468 of the
Marine Corps League
would like to thank
everyone who participated
in the Toys For Tots
campaign for 2015. We
appreciate the organizations
and businesses who
participated as drop off
points and the generosity of
everyone in Ontario and
Livingston Counties who
donated toys. We were able
to collect and distribute
4,000 toys through our
participating agencies. A lot
of children had a great
Christmas because of all of
you. Thank you and we look
forward to 2016.
On Monday, December
29th I was in Denny’s in
Batavia alone having
breakfast. I am a widow of
20 years plus and dine alone
quite often, and across from
me a beautiful family were
also having breakfast. A
husband and wife and I
assume their daughter who
had 2 beautiful well behaved
twin daughters. They left
before I did; they glanced
over and gave me a nice
smile. After they left the
waitress came over and told
me they had paid for my
breakfast. I don’t know if
they are local or just passing
through. I just want to say
Thank You to them. I will
pass it on.
A Grateful
Senior Citizen
The residents of Lakeville
Estates want to give a huge
THANK YOU to all the local
merchants who were so
generous with their
donations of gift cards and
merchandise to use as door
prizes at our Community
Christmas Party.
Gratefully Yours,
Residents of
Lakeville Estates
Hats off to Caledonia
Mayor Debbie Davis for
securing a third grant for the
culverts on Mill Street. As a
tax payer it’s encouraging to
see our federal & state tax
dollars put back into our
community & not always
others. Keep up the good
work!!!
Cat overpopulation is not a cat problem, it’s a people problem. People caused it, people can fix it. All cats deserve a home and love; they should not be living wild outside. Please do not get a cat or kitten if you cannot have it spayed or neutered or keep it in at all times, and give it a lifetime home. Aid financially or help if you can those trying to trap, neuter & release feral cats. If you can, give a shelter cat or two a good home.
Veterinarians, please make the cost to euthanize an animal as low as you possibly can. Many animals suffer needlessly as their owners cannot afford the high cost. Do it for the animals.
While driving yesterday, I had two cars pull out in front of me! When I looked in my rear view mirror both times there were no cars behind me. Yes, you “made it” but only because I braked. I could understand if I had 4 or more cars behind me but to wait an extra 30 seconds or so to be safe, why not?
A neighbor up the hill from us lets their stupid dog bark incessantly, even late into the evening (10/ 11pm). If you are not going to take care of a pet properly, then DON’T HAVE ONE! We can hear it inside
our home, even on the opposite side of the house. My wife even wears ear plugs to bed and she can STILL hear it. If it keeps up I will contact the authorities. We are up early for work and we need to sleep!
Just a reminder from Driver’s Education class, when vehicles turn right at an intersection onto a 4- lane road, stay in the right lane, then put on your turning signal to merge to the Left lane. Those turning left onto a 4-lane road, stay in the left lane, and then put your turning signal on to merge to the right lane. As a quick reminder, when turning, stay in the closest lane, then merge into the other lane making sure lane is clear & your turning signal is on. Driver’s Ed should NEVER have been cut from school budgets. If you drive, learn the rules of the road & law enforcement of the rules as well.

Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger.

Quality of life: Quality of life is too often overlooked when professionals are considering a career change. Though the opportunity to make more money is enticing, money should not dictate your decision. A new job with a higher salary might require you to be on the road more often than your current career, negatively impacting your quality of life, especially if you have a family. Longer hours at the office may also take away from family or personal time, which can affect your quality of life as well. Before changing careers, think of the potential impact such a change may have on you and if you’re willing to live with that impact.
