FCEDA works with 60 businesses adding 1,400+ jobs to local economy

During the second quarter of 2013, the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) provided services and resources to 60 businesses that are adding more than 1,400 jobs in Fairfax County. Most of these businesses are in the information technology and professional services

sectors, and seven are foreign-based firms using a Fairfax County location to expand in North America.

“It is impressive for so many companies in Fairfax County to be hiring at this time,” said Gerald L. A remarkable, if not unprecedented, event happened at Fairfax County Economic Development

Authority headquarters in Tysons in August. Three chambers of commerce —the Asian-American Chamber of Commerce, the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Northern Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce—signed a memorandum of understanding that pledges the groups to collaborate on programming and events. The goal of the MOU is to guide the organizations to provide increased opportunities for minority-owned businesses in northern Virginia and around the state.

There are a few reasons that this was an interesting development. One, it reflects the increasing strength and importance of minority business communities. These chambers could not exist without a critical mass of companies that are supportive members. Two, these organizations represent a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds, and agreeing to collaborate strikes me as an important milestone in bridging cultural gaps. Three, there is strength and influence in numbers. Together the organizations can present an impressive, forward-thinking alliance.

The FCEDA brought the chambers together to discuss how to build alliances, and that discussion led to the unique agreement. It makes perfect sense that it happened here, because Fairfax County truly is the melting pot of the 21st century.

“Diversity is a tremendous asset for the county. [It] fosters creative problem-solving, which in turn fosters an innovative, dynamic, world-class business community.

It also makes Fairfax County a more cosmopolitan community.”— Steven L. Davis

The most recent (2007) Economic Census compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau reported that more than 18,900 Asian-owned businesses, 9,600 Hispanic/Latino-owned firms and 7,700 African American-owned businesses operate in Fairfax County. These firms employed nearly 55,000 in the county and had more than $8.3 billion in annual revenue.

Four companies based in Fairfax County are on Black Enterprise magazine’s 2013 list of the 100 largest African American-owned service or industrial companies in the nation. Ten Fairfax County companies are on HispanicBusiness.com’s 2013 list of the 500 largest Hispanic-owned businesses. There is no comparable national list of Asian-American businesses, but Fairfax County boasts strong communities of business people with Korean, Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese and other Asian backgrounds.

This diversity is a tremendous asset for the county. Diversity fosters creative problem-solving, which in turn fosters an innovative, dynamic, world-class business community. It also makes Fairfax County a more cosmopolitan community. Along with the signing of the chamber document, those are all things to celebrate. n

news & notablesLeidos and Transurban announce Fairfax County headquarters

Tysons Corner-based SAIC announced that Leidos, its national security, health and engineering solutions spinoff, will be headquartered in Fairfax County. The company signed a lease for office space located at 11951 and 11955 Freedom Drive, named One and Two Freedom Square, in the Reston Town Center complex.

SAIC, one of 10 Fortune 500 companies based in Fairfax County, has long been one of the county’s largest employers, and in 2009 relocated its headquarters to the Tysons Corner area of the county. It announced in 2012 that it would split into two independent, publicly traded companies.

“SAIC has been a valued member of this business community for many, many years. Fairfax County is extremely proud to be the home of both the resultant corporate headquarters,” said Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., president and CEO of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority. “SAIC is one of the companies that communities cherish as they bring not just jobs, but because they are amongst the absolute best corporate citizens in America.”

Transurban Ltd., an Australia-based company that partnered with the Commonwealth of Virginia on providing solutions to transportation issues in northern Virginia through the 95 and 495 Express Lanes projects in Fairfax County and points south, has changed its U.S. headquarters to Fairfax County from New York City.

“Transurban is pleased to officially call Fairfax our U.S. home base,” said Jennifer Aument, Transurban’s group general manager, North America. “The transportation solutions we’re delivering with Virginia provide the region with new options and predictable travel, which helps make Fairfax County an even better place to live, work and play.” n
