Canada is multilingual. So is DMLL! 3

The year 2013-2014 has been a year of greatachievements and strong hopes. As an interimchair of the department, one of my priorities wasto invite my colleagues to redefine the mandateof our department and work together to enhanceits profile as a research-intensive unit within theFaculty of Arts. Lengthy discussions held in thedepartment throughout the year allowed us tothink how to advance teaching and research inthe areas of world literatures and cultures,intercultural/multicultural relations andmultilingualism. We collectively agreed on thenecessity of using new tools and inventivestrategies to achieve our goals, including the useof new technologies, the encouragement ofinnovative research, and the adoption of newmarketing strategies.

Our students are our most important asset and weare deeply committed to their intellectual andpersonal development at the undergraduate andthe graduate levels. This is evidenced by themultiple opportunities offered to undergraduatestudents to study abroad, exploring what theworld has to offer and getting immersed indifferent languages and cultures. In 2013-2014,our students actively contributed to thedepartment's community life through students'clubs, discussion groups, conferences andworkshops including the Entre Amigos' FilmSeries and the Third Undergraduate Symposium.Investing in our students has never been asurgent and timely as it is today. This is the reasonwhy many colleagues engaged in fundraisingactivities at the Faculty and the departmentallevels to enhance students' learning experienceand research activities conducted by professorsand their team of young researchers.

The department is committed to enhancingcollaboration with other departments andfaculties. Different forms of cooperation are

currently discussed to establish strong ties withpartners at two different levels: theinterdepartmental level: development ofcollaborative projects with ILOB and theDepartment of Communication in two areas:foreign language teaching and cooperation withthe European Center for Modern Languages onone hand, and Film studies (Major in WorldCinema) on the other hand. And the inter-facultylevel with Telfer School of Business: the Spanishprogram is actively participating in GlobalEntrepreneurship Week, co-organizing withTelfer a special workshop on Entrepreneurshipfor the Arts. This is the first time such aworkshop is held specifically for Arts students.Different DMLL sections would like to pursuethe idea of offering a joint Major with the Schoolof Business, in conjunction with joint Majorsbetween languages and business.

We remain dedicated to serving the University ofOttawa through our expert training in languageteaching and multicultural relations. We are alsofocused on intercultural interdisciplinarystrategies to ensure a sustainable growth ofenrollments in our culture courses offered inEnglish/French or in Spanish in the fields ofliterature, cultural studies, film studies, popularculture, diaspora studies, transculturality andminority languages and cultures.

In addition to this, we have strong ties with overthirty foreign embassies in Ottawa and insuresconstant relationships with the internationalcommunity through Government Foreign Affairsoffices, cultural centers (e.g. Cervantes, GoetheInstitute, CGCE) and diasporic organizations. The successful Ambassador Lecture Series andthe End of Year ceremony attended by foreignambassadors and other members of thediplomatic missions attest to this.

Greatachievements,strong hopes

"Having a deep understanding ofthe languages, histories, literatures, cultures andcivilizations of potential newtrading partners or securityallies will assist Canada inbuilding and maintaining humanrelationships in connectingpresent decision-making processto past developments in theirhistories." (Imagining Canada'sFuture, SSHRC Report, 2013)

A Word from the Acting ChairIt is our goal to achieve excellence in research, teaching and service. It is also our mission tocross boarders and build bridges betweenprofessors and students, between the universityand the community at large. And for this, theyear 2013-2014 has been a truly successful one!
