Faculty Development Program on “Recent Advances in Chemical Sciences”
09 – 20 July 2020 Organized by
Department of Chemistry, SRM IST, Kattankulathur-603 203, India
Department of Chemistry, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur organized the faculty
development program on “Recent Advances in Chemical Sciences” from July 9th – 20th, 2020. More than 100
faculty members attended the program and 26 eminent scientists delivered the scientific talk. Dr. M.
Arthanareeswari, Head, Department of Chemistry, SRM IST, KTR, as a convener, welcomed the delegates and the
faculty members of the Department moderated the sessions. The participants eagerly interacted with the scientists
and got enlightened during the questions and answers sessions after the lecture. The details of the program and
extract of each lecture is given below.
Talk-1: 09-07-2020, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.
Speaker: Prof. Dr. Amitava Das FASc, FNASc, FNA Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Kolkata
Title: Purpose-built Nanoaggregates and Stimuli-responsive Assemblies for Predictive Responses
The talk discuss about the design and synthesis of purpose based supramolecular building block through harnessing
both covalent interactions as well as various non-bonding interactions and discussed on how to address the problems
in recognition of certain anionic analytes, having high enthalpy of solvation in highly polar solvents, by adapting an
alternate approach of metal-ligand coordination using appropriately designed metal-ion based receptors. The talk
also discussed about the changes in molecular conformations and movements in a host-guest supramolecular
assembly. The session was moderated by Dr. Priyadip Das.

Speaker: Prof. Dr.V. Chandrasekhar FNA, FTWAS Centre Director, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Hyderabad Title: Molecular magnets: Moving from serendipity to design
The speaker shares exciting story of how a serendipitous observation of molecular magnets were explored. The
lessons learn through this exercise where beautifully explored to come up with designed inorganic metal complexes
with molecular magnetic properties. This highly ordered lecture initially described . The session was moderated by
Dr. G. T. Senthil Andavan.

Speaker: Prof. Dr. T. N. Narayanan Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Hyderabad Title: Role of Interfaces in Energy Technology and Spintronics
The talk discussed about the development of functional mesoscopic interfaces, and probing the novel and
unprecedented phenomena emanating from these junctions, development of novel interfaces from 1D, 2D and 3D
nanomaterials. Interface induced heterogeneous catalysis control is another core theme of their research. Electron
transport properties of mesoscale junctions and their interactions with light are other areas of interest. The session
was moderated by Dr. M. Prakash.

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Subhasish Basu Majumder Materials Science Center Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, West Bengal Title: Hybrid BAT – CAP for High Performance Energy Storage
The talk discussed about the carbon-coated sodium vanadium phosphate/activated carbon (NVP@C/AC) bi-material
electrodes offer superior performance as compared to either NVP@C or AC electrodes. These bi-materials are
proven to be excellent material candidates for high power density lithium titanium oxide (LTO)//NVP@C/AC
hybrid battery capacitor (bat-cap) type Li-ion rechargeable full-cells. Moreover, he also revealed that in his
laboratory they have developed usable rechargeable batteries starting from small compound synthesis. The session
was moderated by Dr. Samarendra Maji.

Speaker: Dr. Nimai Chand Pramanik Principal Scientist CSIR-Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata, West Bengal Title: Indigenous Aerogel Supercapacitors - Technological Challenges, Achievements and Applications
The lecture describes extensively about supercapacitors especially in the context of efforts to develop in an
indigenous way. The session was moderated by Dr. Manab Kundu.

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Ashwini Nangia Director, National Chemical Laboratory, Pune Title: Crystal engineering of solid state pharmaceuticals
The role of solid state analysis of drug with its co-crystals in various therapeutic areas were described. The
importance of adopting the latest technologies including AI and machine learning were highlighted. Many success
stories on how co-crystal formation will help to improve the pharmacological properties of drugs. The session was
moderated by Dr. Palash Sanphui.

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Beeraiah Baire Department of Chemistry Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras Title: The Synthesis and Reactivity of Unprecedented Gem-Dihaloketones: The α,α--Dihalo- β -Acetoxy Ketone Building Blocks The talk discussed about the unprecedented reactivity of gem-dihaloketones under various reaction conditions. For
examples, the conversion of propargylic acetates to gem-diodohalides using NIS followed by reaction it with water
as Lewis base for the synthesis of mono-iodo derivatives. Later when amines were used, they observed the
formation of α,β-unsaturated ketones. The session was moderated by Dr. Venkatramaiah Nutalapati.

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Sukhes Mukherjee All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)-Bhopal Title: COVID-19 Diagnosis and Role of C Reactive Protein

The talk discussed about the COVID 19, symptoms, diagnosis, cytokine storm and CRP. Finally, the speaker
concluded that the negative results does not rule out SARS-CoV-2 infection, particularly in those who have been in
contact with the virus. Follow-up testing with a molecular diagnostic should be considered to rule out the infections
of those individuals. The session was moderated by Dr. Priyadip Das.

University- Israel. During his talk, he shared the story of how, the natural product, Nuphar alkaloid was isolated

Associate Professor Centre for NanoScience and Technology Madanjeet School of Green Energy Technologies Pondicherry University (A Central University), Puducherry Title: Fuel Cells: Material Challenges and Opportunities
The overview of the talk was fuel cells, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC’s), material challenges and advances. The
speaker concluded that Nissan has developed the first solid-oxide fuel cell vehicle on 4th August 2016 with a battery
capacity of 24kWh and a tank capacity of 30L having a SOFC output of 5kW and driving range of 600 KM. The
session was moderated by Dr. Ashok Kumar Sundramoorthy.

He is currently an Associate Professor in IISER Kolkata. Starting from porous framework materials, he discussed
the opportunities how metal organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks can be designed, synthesized and
utilized them various applications including hydrogen and CO2 storage. The session was moderated by Dr.

graphene paper/Polypyrrole nanocomposite as electrode for flexible solid-state Supercapacitors. The session was

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Hans-Uwe Dahms Ph.D., D.Sc. Dept. of Biomedical Science and Environmental Biology Kaohsiung Medical University, Taiwan. Title: Medicinal Chemistry Applications of Natural Resources such as from Hydrothermal Vents
The lecture discussed about medicinal chemistry applications of natural resources, stress responses and studies the
toxicology of stressors from physical, chemical, and biological sources integratively. The speaker also disclosed
about the medicinal compounds, the spread of diseases, antibiotic-resistance, food and drink safety from water
sources, and integrative approaches in Environmental Medicine that include environmental and public health
monitoring, risk assessment, remediation, and management. The session was moderated by Dr. Gopal Chandru
Senadi.

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Bram Hoex University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney, Australia. Title: Atomic layer deposition enabling higher efficiency solar cells

He is currently a professor in university of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. In his lecture, he introduced and
provided an overview about photovoltaic research. He extensively ALD based work developed by his research
group especially ALD Al2O3that is a world record in Cd- free CZTS solar cells in a cost effective manner. The
session was moderated by Dr. K. Ananthanarayanan.
Talk-15: 15-07-2020, 03:00 – 04:00 p.m. Speaker: Prof. Dr. Kanishka Biswas Associate Professor in New Chemistry Unit, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bengaluru. Title: Ultra-low thermal conductive metal chalcogenides for high performance thermoelectric energy Conversion
During his lecture, he extensively discussed about the thermoelectric materials. Two key conclusion of this talk are
1. Intrinsic low thermal conductivity is an attractive paradigm for developing high performance thermoelectric. 2.
Engineering of ferroelectric instability can be readily applied to boost the thermoelectric performance of materials

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Allen L. Garner PE Undergraduate Program Chair Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering Purdue University,USA Title: Electric pulses: Fundamental Biophysics and Emerging Biomedical Applications
This lecture has discussed on examining the generation of intense electromagnetic radiations such as electric fields,
lasers and plasmas and its impact on materials, particularly biological tissues and cells. The speaker also mentioned
about research interest and bioelectrics application in cancer treatment, bioenergy, food treatment, neuroscience,
nonlethal weapons and Vet Med. The session was moderated by Dr. S. M. Mahalingam.
Talk-17: 16-07-2020, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon Speaker: Dr. Rajarshi Chakrabarti Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay Title: Transport of active and passive probes in crowded environments: theory and simulations

The talk on the transport of active and passive probes in crowded environments: theory and simulations nicely
demonstrated how in heterogeneous environments, translational and rotational dynamics play a critical role in self-
propelled Janus particles. The session was moderated by Dr. Samarendra Maji.

IIT Bombay, Powai, Mumbai Title: Lithium and other high energy density batteries: Science, Technology and applications
The talk started by highlighting the multiple challenges faced by indian energy sector. A comprehensive overview
about lithium ion battery field was presented. At the end Prof. talked about their startup firm (Virya’s battery) based
on their research work. This could be first technologically self reliant commercial lithium cells manufacturing
company in india. The session was moderated by Dr. Priyadip Das.

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Raji Sundararajan ECET Purdue university, (Indiana, US) Title: Virus related Cancer
A detailed description of virus related cancer was nicely described. Later the electric pulse and electrochemotherapy
were benchmarked with conventional chemo and radiotherapy and the advantages were described. Real time
experience with several cancer patients were discussed. Several natural products combined with their technology
were successfully employed. The ECT (Electrical pulse + Chemodrug +Electrochemotherapy technology)
technology was discussed in detail. The session was moderated by Dr. S. M. Mahalingam.

Speaker: Prof. Dr. R. Boomi Shankar Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune Title: Organic and Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Ferroelectric Materials Supported by Amino-phosphorus (V) Scaffolds

In this lecture ferroelectric materials from organic and organic –inorganic hybrids were discussed. Extensive
characterization. The utility of ferroelectric organic phosphonium salts as flexible composite material for mechanical
energy harvesting applications has been extensively probed. The first examples of all organic mechanical energy
harvesting composite systems were unravelled. The session was moderated by Dr. Manab Kundu.

Speaker: Dr. C. M. NAGARAJA Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IITR), Punjab. Title: Chemical Fixation of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) into Value-Added Chemicals
The lecture described about the high surface areas and tailored pore size and functionality of MOFs that make them
suitable candidates for H2 storage and selective CO2 capture applications. The talk also focused on MOFs composed
of potential interaction sites for H2 thereby to enhance the affinity and storage capacity at ambient conditions.
Furthermore, development of porous MOFs with pores functionalized with polar groups for selective capture and
conversion of CO2to organic small molecules. The session was moderated by Dr. Renjith Sasimohanan Pillai.

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Srivatsan Seergazhi Gopalan Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune Title: Probing Mood (Structure) Swings of Therapeutic Nucleic Acid Motifs
The lecture discussed the concepts to develop tools to assess structure, dynamics and function of nucleic acids in
cell-free and complex cellular environments. Furthermore, the development of minimally perturbing and
conformation-sensitive multi-app nucleoside probes for studying nucleic acids in real time by fluorescence and in
3D by X-ray crystallography. The session was moderated by Dr. G. T. Senthil Andavan.

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Erode N. Prabhakaran, Department of Organic Chemistry Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangaluru Title: COVID-19 - Chemistry and Therapeutics
The importance of Ramachandran plot in stabilization of proteins in general were discussed. An excellent design
was made to study the alpha helical turn stabilization. With success in the design, their own model was proposed and
benchmarked with other models. Their design enabled to study the helix growth with very precision. The session
was moderated by Dr. G. T. Senthil Andavan.
Talk-25: 18-07-2020, 02:00 – 03:00 p.m. Speaker: Prof. Dr. T Govindaraju Associate Professor Bioorganic Chemistry Laboratory Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bengaluru. Title: Molecular Architectonics for Health, Energy and Environment
Inspired by the stability of silk in nature, several mimeticwere designed, synthesized and executed for their excellent
molecular architectonic properties. Combing organic synthesis and material chemistry characterizations, various
systems were successfully demonstrated. The session was moderated by Dr. Ashok Kumar Sundramoorthy.

Talk-26: 20-7-2020, 11:00 a.m – 12:00 noon Speaker: Prof. Dr. Santosh Haram Department of Physical Chemistry Univeristy of Pune, Pune. Title: Electrochemical methods for energy research
In the lecture, he discusses various opportunities of multidisciplinary science centred around the electrochemical
techniques to do materials research. In particular, SCEM- Scanning electrochemical microscopy was discussed in
various context including imaging of live cells under biological stress. The session was moderated by Dr.
Balachandra Kakade.
This FDP provided a good opportunity for the faculty members to gain the innovative ideas and scientific
informations related to the recent advances in chemical sciences. Interaction between the faculty members and
Invited Speakers could pave the way for fruitful scientific collaboration towards the betterment of societal needs.
