GENERAL INFORMATION

Selection A selection procedure takes place prior to admission to any degree programme in this Faculty. Students who do not pass a sufficient number of modules at the end of the first year of study to be admitted to the second year of study, have to apply for re-admission.

Admission Any person who wishes to register at the University for the first time, or after an interruption of studies, should apply or re-apply for admission. Application for admission to all programmes in the Faculty of Theology closes on 30 September of the preceding year.

Statement of symbols or academic record When registering at this University for the first time, a candidate has to submit a record of symbols obtained for each subject in the Grade 12 examination. Candidates who studied at other tertiary institutions have to submit an official academic record.

National Senior Certificate All undergraduate candidates who enroll at the University of Pretoria for the first time, must show their original National Senior Certificate at the Student Administration of their faculty before the end of the first semester.

Language of tuition In conducting its general business, the University uses two official languages, namely Afrikaans and English.

In formal education the language of tuition is either English or Afrikaans, or both of these languages; provided that there is a demand and that it is academically and economically justifiable. However, it remains the student’s responsibility to ascertain on an annual basis in which language a module and any further level of that module is presented. In respect of administrative and other services, a student has the right to choose whether the University should communicate with him or her in English or Afrikaans. Where the University has the capacity, Sepedi is used as an additional language of communication.

Bursaries and loans Particulars of bursaries and loans are available at www.up.ac.za/fao.

Accommodation Applications for accommodation in university residences for a particular year should be submitted as from March 1 of the preceding year. Applications will be considered as long as vacancies exist, and prospective students are advised to apply well in advance. Please note that admission to the University does not automatically imply that lodging will also be available.

Welcoming day, registration and start of the academic year Details of the welcoming day to which all parents are cordially invited, and the subsequent programme for registration and start of the academic year during which all new first-year students must be present, are obtainable from the office of the Director: Student Affairs.

Prescribed books The lecturers will supply information regarding prescribed books at the commencement of the specific programme or module.

Amendment of regulations and fees The University retains the right to amend the regulations and to change programme/module fees without prior notification. NB: The fees advertised and thus levied in respect of a module or study programme offering represent a combination of the costs associated with the formal services rendered (for example lectures, practicals, access to laboratories, consumables used in laboratories, etc) as well as associated overheads such as the provision of library and recreation facilities, security and cleaning services, electricity and water supply, etc. Therefore the fees in respect of a module or study programme offering cannot simply be reconciled with the visible services that are rendered in respect of such module or study programme. Leave of absence

If it is impossible for a registered student at the University of Pretoria to continue with

his/her studies/research in a specific year, but he/she intends to continue in the

following year, the student must apply in writing to the dean of the relevant faculty for

leave of absence. The application must include: full names, student number, address,

reasons and period for leave of absence, for example the whole year, first semester

(January to June) or second semester (July to December), name of supervisor (where

applicable), and the student’s intentions for the period after his/her leave of absence.

However, in accordance with the policy of the University of Pretoria, leave of absence is

not granted for more than two years. Any outstanding fees should be paid in full upon

the student’s return from his/her leave of absence.

Degree with distinction Weighted averages (GPA), together with other faculty-specific criteria if applicable, are used at UP to calculate averages for the determination of distinctions.

Definition of terms Familiarise yourself with the following terms. They are used generally in all faculties. Certain terms are only applicable to the Faculty of Theology.

academic literacy: the minimum level of conversational, reading and writing skills in English or Afrikaans needed to participate successfully in programmes of the University of Pretoria academic year: the duration of the academic year as determined by the University Council church partner: a church with which the University has concluded a formal agreement regarding the training of candidates and the provision of academic personnel church-specific: that portion of a programme or theological instruction which takes place in terms of the regulations in the Yearbook, but which deals with the specific perspective, practice or instruction requirements of a church or denominational partner colloquium doctum: an interview which the Dean, the head of department concerned and the supervisor (if required) may have with a candidate to determine his or her study background and level of scientific knowledge or competence as scholar and researcher core module: a module that is compulsory for a particular programme or package credit (or credit value): a value unit linked to particular learning activities; in the case of modules, the value is related to the complexity and the total number of learning hours needed to complete the modules successfully

If necessary, the examination mark is finalised after ancillary examinations have been completed. extended (study) programme: a study programme for a degree or diploma which, in accordance with the regulations, is taken over a longer period than the minimum duration of the degree or diploma final mark: the mark calculated on the basis of the performance mark and the examination mark a student obtained, using a formula which is determined from time to time in the regulations with the proviso that should no performance mark be required, the examination mark serves as the final mark fundamental module: a module that serves as the academic basis of the learning activities for a particular programme or package general denominational: theological training which is not denomination specific grade point average based on module credits: an average mark that is calculated by multiplying the final mark achieved in a module with the credit value of that module and then dividing the sum of these values by the total of the credit values of all the modules for which a student was enrolled. The result of these calculations is a weighted average based on module credits. GS: a combined mark (performance mark plus examination mark) of at least 40% required for admission to a specific prescribed module learning hours: the notional number of hours a student should spend to master the learning content of a particular module or programme. The total number of learning hours for a module consists of the time needed for lectures, practicals, self-tuition and any other activity required by the programme. Learning hours for modules are calculated on the basis of 40 working hours per week x 28 weeks = 1120 + 80 additional hours for evaluation = 1200. For undergraduate modules, the total number of learning hours per module is calculated using the formula: number of credits (per module) x 10 level (or year level): an indication of the level of complexity of a module (e.g. first, second or further level) and also implies a particular credit value; the (year) level is indicated by the first digit of the module code (thus, ENG 352 is a module in the discipline English at level 3) module: a defined part of a subject which forms a whole module code: consists of an equal number of capitals and digits, which indicate the name of the module, the year of study and the level of the module NBT: National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) assesses academic readiness of first year university students as a supplement to secondary school reports on learning achieved in content specific courses performance mark: the mark awarded to a student on the basis of tests, class work, practical work or any other work which was done in a module programme: a coherent number of modules which lead to the acquisition of a specific qualification (certificate, diploma or degree); coherent elements and actions of education and training which lead to a specific outcome or set of outcomes

REGULATIONS AND CURRICULA

The rules for the degrees published here are subject to change and may be amended prior to the commencement of the academic year in 2015. The General Regulations (G Regulations) apply to all faculties of the University of Pretoria. It is expected of each student to familiarise himself or herself well with these regulations. Ignorance concerning these regulations will not be accepted as an excuse for any transgression. 1. Admission to diploma or undergraduate study 1.1 General 1.1.1 To register for a first diploma or bachelor's degree at the University, a candidate

must submit – • for admission to diploma studies, a National Senior Certificate with

admission for diploma purposes; • for admission to bachelor studies, a National Senior Certificate with

admission for degree purposes. In addition to this, the candidate must comply with the specific admission requirements as prescribed in the admission regulations and the faculty regulations of the departments. Academic literacy The academic literacy of all students who enrol at the University of Pretoria for the first time and all new students enrolling with the Faculty of Theology for the first time will be assessed at the start of the academic year by means of their NSC-marks. Students following a degree programme in English: The NSC Grade 12 English mark will be used to determine whether students in the Faculty of Theology should register for the academic literacy modules (ALL 110 and ALL 120 in English):

Page 11: FACULTIES OF THE Books 2015/Theology/t… · Theology 2015 5 curriculum: a series of modules grouped together from different disciplines over a specified period of time and in a certain

Theology 2015

7

Home Language: Students with a 4-symbol or lower register for ALL 110 and ALL 120.

First Additional Language: Students with a 5 or lower, will register for ALL 110 and ALL 120.

Students following a degree programme in Afrikaans: The NSC Grade 12 Afrikaans mark will be used to determine whether students in the Faculty of Theology should register for the academic literacy modules (VAG 110 and VAG 120 in Afrikaans):

Home Language: Students with a 4-symbol or lower register for VAG 110 and VAG 120.

All students must pass VAG 120 as prescribed by the curriculum. These modules have to be passed before the qualification will be awarded.

NB: Grade 12 examination refers to the final National Senior Certificate examination.

1.1.2 The following persons may also be considered for admission: (i) A candidate who is in possession of a certificate, which is deemed by the

University to be equivalent to the required National Senior Certificate, can be considered for admission to diploma studies.

(ii) A candidate who is in possession of a certificate, which is deemed by the University to be equivalent to the required National Senior Certificate with admission for degree purposes, can be considered for admission to bachelor’s degree studies.

(iii) Note: A conditional exemption certificate issued by HESA does not grant admission to bachelor's degree study. However, in certain circumstances some of the faculties do accept a conditional exemption on the basis of mature age issued by HESA. Candidates are advised to contact the specific student administration of a faculty in this regard.

(iv) A candidate who is a graduate from another tertiary institution or has been granted the status of a graduate of such an institution can be considered for admission to undergraduate studies.

(v) A candidate who obtains at least 55% in the institutional proficiency test (National Benchmark Test), which is prescribed by the University from time to time, can be considered for admission to the relevant programme.

Abovementioned candidates are requested to contact the faculty concerned for more information regarding admission requirements.

1.1.3 Senate may limit the number of students allowed to register for a programme, in

which case the Dean concerned may, at his own discretion, select from the students who qualify for admission, those who may be admitted.

1.1.4 Subject to faculty regulations and the stipulations of General Regulations G.1.3

and G.54 a candidate is admitted to the study for the honours degree, only if he or she is already in possession of a recognised bachelor’s degree.

1.2 Admission requirements for the Faculty of Theology

To be able to gain access to a faculty and specific programmes, prospective students require the appropriate combinations of recognised NSC subjects as well as certain levels of achievement in the said subjects. In this regard the

Page 12: FACULTIES OF THE Books 2015/Theology/t… · Theology 2015 5 curriculum: a series of modules grouped together from different disciplines over a specified period of time and in a certain

Theology 2015

8

determination of an Admission Point Score (APS) is explained and a summary of the faculty specific requirements per programme and the specific subjects required per programme is provided.

Determination of an Admission Point Score (APS) The calculation is simple and based on a candidate’s achievement in six 20-credit recognised subjects by using the NSC ratings, which is the “1 to 7 scale of achievement”. Thus, the highest APS that can be achieved is 42. Life Orientation is excluded from the calculation determining the APS required for admission.

Rating code Rating Marks %

7 Outstanding achievement 80-100%

6 Meritorious achievement 70-79%

5 Substantial achievement 60-69%

4 Adequate achievement 50-59%

3 Moderate achievement 40-49%

2 Elementary achievement 30-39%

1 Not achieved 0-29%

Provisional admission is based on the results obtained in the final Grade 11 examination. Final admission is based on Grade 12 results. Please note: The final Grade 12 results will be the determining factor with regard to admission.

Alternative admission channels: Candidates with an APS lower than required, could be considered for admission to the faculty if they meet the additional assessment criteria specified by the faculty from time to time. Preference will, however, be given to students who comply with the standard admission requirements of the faculty.

1.3 Specific admission requirements for the Faculty of Theology

a) A valid National Senior Certificate with admission for degree purposes. b) The minimum APS is 25 for admission to degree studies and 22 for

admission to diploma studies. c) The following minimum subject and level requirements, including four

subjects with a 20 credit value each, chosen from the designated subject list and with a minimum rating of 4 (50-59%) for degree purposes and a rating of 3 (40-49%) for diploma purposes.

d) One of the four subjects chosen from the designated list must be either Afrikaans or English, the medium of instruction at the University.

e) Life Orientation is excluded when calculating the APS.

The applications of candidates whose Grade 11 marks do not meet the admission requirements, but who do comply with the above requirements in the Grade 12 examinations, will be reconsidered on request, based on their results in the institutional proficiency test and only if there are places available in the Faculty, and on condition that the candidates applied for admission prior to 30 September of the previous year.

Candidates who are admitted provisionally on the basis of their Grade 11 results, retain their admission after sitting for the Grade 12 examinations, only if they obtain an NSC with admission for degree purposes and comply with all of the above requirements.

1.4 Requirements for specific modules

A student who registers for a module which is offered by another faculty, must familiarise him- or herself with the admission requirements for the particular modules (see yearbook of that faculty), as well as subminima for examinations, supplementary examinations, etc.

2. Registration for a particular year of study

At the beginning of an academic year, a student registers for all the modules he or she intends taking in that particular year (whether these are first-semester, second-semester or year modules). Changes to the selection of modules may be made at the beginning of the second semester with the Dean's approval. A student may only register for modules that will fit in on the lecture, test and examination timetables. Application for reregistration can be refused on the grounds of poor academic performance in the previous year. If a module does not attract enough registrations in order to be presented economically, the Dean may decide to withdraw it. The affected students will be informed in time to enable them to register for an alternative module. If a student interrupts his/her registration for the undergraduate programme and it is not renewed within four years of the first registration, the credits obtained will no longer be valid. The student should repeat the modules already passed.

Page 14: FACULTIES OF THE Books 2015/Theology/t… · Theology 2015 5 curriculum: a series of modules grouped together from different disciplines over a specified period of time and in a certain

Theology 2015

10

3. Module credits for unregistered students There are students who attend lectures, write tests and examinations and in this manner earn “marks”, but have either not registered for modules or have not registered as students at all. These marks will not be communicated to any student before he/she has provided proof of enrolment. A student cannot obtain any credits in a specific academic year for a module “passed” in this manner during a previous academic year and for which he/she was not registered. This arrangement applies even where the student is prepared to pay the tuition fees.

4. Examination admission and pass requirements A performance mark of at least 40% is required in order to be admitted to the

examination in a module, with the exception of first-semester modules at 100-level for which the requirement is at least 30%.

Excluding cases where faculty regulations require a higher percentage, a subminimum of at least 40% is required in the examination in each module. Should the student fail to achieve the required subminimum, the lecturer could grant a supplementary examination provided that the average of the semester mark and the examination mark is at least 40%.

A final mark of at least 50% is required to pass. The pass mark for a mini-dissertation is at least 50%. The stipulations of G.39 regarding pass requirements for dissertations apply mutatis mutandis to mini-dissertations.

4.1 Subminima in examinations Where applicable, the subminima required in examinations appear in the regulations of the qualification in question and in the syllabi of the modules required for that qualification.

4.2 Examinations

The examinations for semester modules take place at the end of the semester. The examinations for year modules take place in October/November, except where such modules are presented according to a block system, in which case the examinations take place at the end of the particular block period. Each student has the responsibility to ascertain when modules will be written according to the official examination timetable. No cell phones or any other electronic communication aids are allowed in test or examination venues.

4.3 Ancillary examinations

After completion of an examination and before the examination results are published, the examiners may summon a student for an ancillary examination on particular aspects of the work of that module.

4.4 Re-marking of examination papers (also consult Gen Reg G.14) After an examination, departments give feedback to students about the framework used by the examiners during the examination. The heads of department determine the feedback process. Students may apply for re-marking of an examination paper within 14 calendar days of commencement of lectures in the next semester. The prescribed fee has to be paid. The paper will then be re-marked by an examiner appointed by the head of the department. A student is only allowed either to write the supplementary examination or to apply for a re-mark but not both.

Page 15: FACULTIES OF THE Books 2015/Theology/t… · Theology 2015 5 curriculum: a series of modules grouped together from different disciplines over a specified period of time and in a certain

Theology 2015

11

4.5 Supplementary examinations (a) Supplementary examinations take place after the regular examinations, as

scheduled by the Dean. (b) To pass a supplementary examination, a student must obtain a minimum of

50% - the semester mark does not count. (c) The highest final percentage a student can obtain in a supplementary

examination is 50%. (d) All students with a final mark of 40%-49% will qualify to write the

supplementary examination. If a student does not write the supplementary examination on the scheduled day, there will not be any later opportunity for a rewrite.

4.6 Aegrotat/extraordinary examinations

Students, who do not write their examination on the scheduled day, may apply for an aegrotat/extraordinary examination at the Student Administration Office. Each request is considered by the Head of Department in consultation with the Dean for a decision. Lecturers are not allowed to grant any permission for this category of examination. It is the responsibility of the student to ascertain whether his/her request has been successful. If permission has been granted, the student must write the aegrotat/extraordinary examination during the supplementary examination. Such a student will not qualify for a further supplementary examination.

Application for the above examination must be handed in at the Student Administration Office together with a valid medical certificate not later than three working days after the modules were scheduled to have been written. The worn excuses of having “overslept” or “read the timetable incorrectly” will not be accepted.

A student who has been granted permission to write an aegrotat/extraordinary examination and who then fails to write the examination will not qualify to submit any such application at a later stage.

4.7 Special examinations

A final year student who has complied with all the requirements for a degree, with the exception of a maximum of four semester or two year modules in which a final mark of at least 40% has been obtained, may be admitted to a special examination at any time prior to the scheduled examinations in the relevant modules. See also General Regulations G12.4 and G12.6.

4.8 Class attendance

Class attendance in all modules and for the full duration of the undergraduate programmes is compulsory for all students. The course coordinator of a particular module must also publish the attendance requirements of that module in the study guide and must set out how class attendance will be monitored. A student may be refused admission to the examination in a particular module if he/she failed to fulfill the published attendance requirements in that module.

Page 16: FACULTIES OF THE Books 2015/Theology/t… · Theology 2015 5 curriculum: a series of modules grouped together from different disciplines over a specified period of time and in a certain

5. Test policy 5.1 Semester tests There will be at least two evaluation opportunities per semester module.

The scheduled dates of official semester tests may only be changed with the permission of all members of a class group present during a scheduled lecture. Should such a change of schedule occur, the onus is on each student to ensure that he/she is aware of the change. Students are entitled to perusal of tests scripts but not to a re-mark by either the lecturer or an external examiner.

5.2 Aegrotat tests A student who is unable to write an official semester test on the scheduled date or at the scheduled time, must apply in writing for an aegrotat or extraordinary test. Written applications must be handed in to the lecturer who is responsible for the module, or to the relevant departmental secretary, beforehand, or within three working days after the scheduled date of the test. In the case of illness, a medical certificate must be submitted to the lecturer or departmental secretary. The medical certificate must certify that the student was in the doctor’s opinion unfit to prepare for or to sit for the test as a result of ill health. A student who has been granted permission to write an aegrotat or an extraordinary test and who fails to write the test, will not qualify for any such test at a later stage.

5.3 Announcement of test and examination results Lecturers will advise students where test scripts will be made available. The lecturer will give the students feedback on semester tests, either by way of written memorandum or a class discussion. Final examination marks will be published by Student Administration. The lecturer will advise students in advance of the date on which perusal of examination papers will take place. Lecturers are entitled to destroy examination scripts one year after the completion of the relevant examination session.

5.4 Handling of problems A student with a problem must first determine whether the problem relates to their registration with the University or to the module in which case the Student Administration should be contacted. A problem regarding the content of a particular module must first be taken up with the relevant lecturer. If the student cannot be assisted with his/her problem at this level, he/she must consult with the relevant head of department and afterwards with the Dean, if necessary. Students may consult the lecturer, head of department or dean by making an appointment during consulting hours.

T.1 Programmes in the Faculty of Theology leading to diplomas and degrees

(a) General The programmes of the Faculty of Theology are aimed at theological training with a view to church ministry. Some offer general training and formation, which can be used by churches as basis for church-specific training and formation. Other programmes, which are offered in co-operation with church partners, offer both generally formative and church-specific formative theological training.

Theology 2015

13

The programmes can be divided into two further categories: (i) those meant for early specialisation [MTh, PhD] (ii) those offering a broad, general education to a reasonably advanced

stage, before focussing on a specific field of specialisation and research [BDiv, MDiv, MTh, leading to PhD].

(b) Degrees and diploma – until end of 2015

The following diploma and degrees are offered in the Faculty (minimum duration of study given in brackets). (i) University Diploma in Theology – [DipTheol] (3 years) (ii) Bachelor of Arts in Theology – [BA(Theology)] (3 years) (iii) Bachelor of Arts Honours in Theology – [BAHons (Theology)] (1 year) (iv) Bachelor of Theology – [BTh] (4 years) (v) Master of Philosophy in Applied Theology – [MPhil in Applied Theology] (2 years) (vi) Master of Divinity – [MDiv] (2 years) (vii) Master of Arts in Theology – [MA(Theology)] (1 year) (viii) Master of Theology – [MTh] (2 years) (ix) Doctor of Philosophy – [PhD] (2 years)

Degrees and diploma – from 2016 The following diploma and degrees will be offered in the Faculty from the academic year 2016. The MA Theology and the MTh degree programmes will no longer be offered, a new MTh has been created. The minimum duration of study is indicated in brackets. (i) University Diploma in Theology – [DipTheol] (3 years) (ii) Bachelor of Theology – [BTh] (3 years) (iii) Bachelor of Theology Honours – [BThHons] (1 year) (iv) Bachelor of Divinity – [BDiv] (4 years) (v) Master of Philosophy in Applied Theology – [MPhil in Applied Theology] (2 years) (vi) Master of Divinity – [MDiv] (2 years) (vii) Master of Theology – [MTh] (1 year) (viii) Doctor of Philosophy – [PhD] (2 years) General Regulations G.1 to G.15 apply to a bachelor’s degree, G.22 to honours studies and G.34 and G.48 to master’s and doctoral studies.

(c) Computer literacy The Faculty of Theology regards computer literacy as an important skill which students have to master during their studies. The outcome which the programme aims to achieve, is theoretically supported formation aimed at a broad spectrum of ministerial needs. For this purpose certain elements of the programme are presented in partnership with churches that bought into the programme. A student who registers for this programme has to submit his or her curriculum to the Dean for approval at the beginning of each year.
