OWEN SOUND
FROM the splendid situation both from alocal and commercial standpoint, one
who studies natural advantages peculiar
to towns and cities cannot help coming to
the conclusion that the City of Owen Soundis destined to become one of the leading
cities of the Dominion of Canada.
The townsite gradually sloping to the
waters of the Bay, has two rivers, the Syden-ham and the Pottawatamie, flowing through
it,which add in many ways to its advan-
tages; the Sydenham River forming the inner
harbor on which are located terminals of
Canada's two greatest lines of railway, the
Canadian Pacific and Grand Trunk.

An Ideal Natural HarborOwen Sound possesses one of the finest natural
harbors on the Great Lakes. The Harbor is absolute-ly safe and easy of approach, so that no matter howheavy the storm any vessel can make this port insafety.
The harbor is large, and in addition to the sev-eral miles of splendid wharf has miles of undevel-oped water front along which the lines of Railwayrun, so that manufacturers on the water front mayhave Railway Sidings installed at a small expense. There are a large number of factory sites availablealong the water front adjoining the Railway tracks. These sites are obtainable in almost any size, andmay be procured at very reasonable prices. Unlim-ited acreage may be obtained on both the West andEast shore of the Harbor.

Unequalled Shipping Facilities
To the manufacturer contemplating the erectionof a plant, the question of shipping is one of themost important. Owen Sound is particularly wellsituated in the way of shipping facilities. For notonly is it the terminal point of the two principalRailway Systems of Canada, the C.P.R. and G.T.R.,hut it has direct C.P.R. steamship connection withFort William at the gateway of the great CanadianWest. A weekly steamship passenger and freight
service is maintained throughout the season of nav-igation, giving Owen Sound manufacturers quick ac-
cess to the Western markets, and the full advantageof lake and rail rates.
The manufacturer in addition to his overheadcosts in Owen Sound has a very decided adArantage inbringing in raw materials by boat.
In addition to the service to the head of thelakes, the Dominion Transportation Co. provides aregular semi-weekly steamboat service to all pointson the Georgian Bay, Manitoulin Island, Sault Ste.Marie, and Str. Michipicoten gives a weekly steam-boat service to the Eastern points of the GeorgianBay and Manitoulin Island. The Str. Pedwell servesthe Western Shore of the Georgian Bay and Mani-toulin Island.

To the ManufacturerThe City of Owen Sound is prepared to offer spec-
ial inducements to manufacturers who are contem-
plating establishing plants in Canada. These con-
cessions, in addition to the general advantages to be
obtained by locating here, enable the Board of Trade
to make a very attractive proposition.

A City of HomesOne point that cannot fail to strike the visitor is
the nlumber of substantial and comfortable homes inthe city. While there are few so-called “palatial”residences, there are on the other hand no slums;from the largest to the smallest, the houses are.practically without exception, solid and comfortable—hcime-like in the true sense of the word. Thiscondition, probably, arises from the fact that OwenSound has a population practically one hundred percent English-speaking; and the further fact is note-worthy, that approximately two-thirds of the citiz-
ens own their own homes and take pride in keepingthelm up to the mark in every way. Owen Soundis truly a city of homes, a community of contentedpeople.

The “Scenery City”Owen Sound lias been called “the Scenery City,”
and not without good reason, for surely Nature hasgenerously dowered her with beauty. No morebeautiful picture can be seen anywhere than thatseen from the Bay—the city nestling between ter-
raced hills, in which the white rock gleams throughand above the curtain of many-shaded green. Un-less it be the view from one of the hills, whence onesees the buildings almost hidden among the spread-ing trees, with the blue of the Bay and the green ofits shores in the background.
The civic authorities have been wise enough notto try to “paint the lily” in their efforts at beauti-fication, but have been content to make the most of
Nature’s bounty. Harrison Park, one of the finest
parks in the Dominion, is almost entirely as Natureleft it: and in the other parks the rule has beenfollowed of interfering as little as possible withnatural conditions.

Winter Sports
It is not always summer in Owen Sound; andin winter one of the favorite “playgrounds” is theCurling Rink, admitted by all who have seen it tobe one of the best in Ontario, if not in the Domin-ion. It is used exclusively and extensively—the Clubhaving an active membership of close to 200—forcurling; skaters and hockey-players are well lookedafter by two fine rinks.

Parks and PlaygroundsThere is no scarcity of parks and playgrounds.
Of the parks, the most important is Harrison Park—so named after one of the pioneers of Owen Sound,by whose sons it was presented to the city—situatedon the banks of the Sydenham River, and said bygood authorities to be one of the finest natural parksin Canada. Victoria Park, a tract of over fifty
acres located on one of the hills, is used as an ath-letic field, with race track, baseball, football andlacrosse grounds, while in a corner of it below theliill are the headquarters of the Bowling and LawnTennis Clubs. Queen’s Park, a delightful little
breathing-spot, is on the river bank only a fewyards from the heart of the business section, whilein the Northern part are Alexandra and St. JulienParks, smaller in size but much enjoyed by thepeople of the sections where they are. A numberof other small parks and squares are scattered overthe city.

Golf Club and Resorts
About three miles fro%n the city, on the westshore of the Bay, is the new Golf and CountryClub, ideally situated both from a sporting and ascenic standpoint; and about a mile further wecome to King’s lioya l Park, one of the popularresorts where many citizens have their summerhomes. Across the Bay arc Paynter’s Bay andKeith, equally popular as summer homes. Indeed, during the hot months both sides of the Bay arelined with cottages and tents housing citizens andvisitors.

Owen Sound a Good Place To LiveIn Owen Sound one can find ideal living’ condi-
tions. As a place of residence this city cannot besurpassed. Owen Sound is well supplied withschools, public library, churches of all denomina-tions, clubs, three theatres, etc. The population is
almost entirely English-speaking.
The magnificent expanse of its harbor gives un-excelled opportunity for boating and canoeing forthose who delight in such amusements, and there is
excellent fishing within a reasonable distance of theCity. Owen Sound is now working out a plan for aMunicipal Fishing Reserve for the benefit of all cit-
izens.
Being surrounded by a splendid agricultural dis-
tiiet living costs arc very reasonable compared withthe larger centres.

Owen Sound’s War RecordOwen Sound is justly proud of her record in the
European War. When the call to arms crdme earlyin August, 1914, many of her citizens, men of theBritish Army Reserve, hastened to re-join then*regiments, while others of her native sons rushedto the aid of the Empire. By the end of August adraft of over fifty had joined the first Canadian con-tingent and were mobilized at Valcartier; and asother calls came for recruits, so came the response.Besides a large number of young men who enlisted
in the Cavalry, Artillery, Air Force and ForestryCorps, Owen Sound contributed two quotas to the20th, 37tli, 58th and 76th Battalions as well as avery large proportion of the strength of two GreyCounty battalions, the 147tli and 248th. It wasalso well represented in the Medical and Nursingservices.
In war honors won Owen Sound ranked high.
Two of its citizens, 1/t. Col. W. A. Bishop and Sergt.
Thos. Holmes, won the Victoria Cross; and manylesser honors, Military Cross, Military Medal andDistinguished Conduct Medal, also came to the boysof the town.

Owen Sound’s claim to recognition as the “Scen-ery City” does not rest entirely on Wliat it lias tooffer within its own borders. Indeed, the title “Cas-cade City” has been more than once suggested, forwithin a few miles of the city are three falls whichfor beauty would be hard to surpass. One, Inglis’
Falls, is shown in the illustration on the cover ofthis book. It is situated about three miles fromOwen Sound, on the Sydenham River, and is but oneof many beauty spots on the river. The Sydenhambetween the Falls and Harrison Park is a successionof rapids, densely wooded, and presents a series ofpictures to delight the lover of unmarred Nature.

A Mecca For Motorists
Owen Sound is already, and will become moreand more as time goes on, a Mecca for Motorists. It
is situated at the junction of two Provincial high-ways, one leading from Toronto, the other fromHamilton via Guelph, and both tapping the mainhighways through the centre of the Province. Sothat all roads .may be said to lead to Owen Sound;and under the supervision of the Ontario Departmentof Highways they are kept in first-class condition
for motor traffic. Other roads leading into the city
are under supervision of the County of Grey or the
Suburban Area Commission of Owen Sound, and are
kept in good shape. And when the motorist is in the
city he finds all the main business and residential
streets paved with asphalt or excellent macadam onwhich driving is a pleasure.
While the Provincial Good Roads system is, in a
way, in its infancy, yet much good work has already
been done and the results are markedly apparent.
