Pub culture• Many Irish people exceed their recommended weekly intake on a Friday or Saturday
night alone, leading to chaos in hospital casualty wards at the weekend. Many of these people may not see their bingeing as a problem, since they only drink once a week, but the habit of binge drinking actually exacerbates the problem.
• On the continent, alcohol is generally taken slowly and often accompanied by food. In Ireland, however, pub culture has us propped up at the bar for hours on end, shocking our organs with a week's worth of alcohol. The net result is the chronic levels of liver disease, heart disease and other alcohol related illnesses that take such a toll on our health service.
