From page 2Results. EPA will take the first samples of

groundwater from the new wells once the wellsare completed and about every four monthsthereafter for at least two years. EPA will makethe results of the groundwater sampling availableto the public through newsletters, and along withother project documents, at the informationrepositories.

Groundwater Contamination in the ValleyThe Area 3 monitoring well project is part

of a larger effort to protect the water supply ofthe San Gabriel Valley. The San Gabriel Basinaquifer provides approximately 90% of thedomestic water supply for more than one millionresidents of the San Gabriel Valley. In 1984,widespread pollution of the underground watersource by industrial chemicals prompted the EPAto add four areas in the San Gabriel Valley (Areas1 through 4) to the National Priorities List of thecountry's most hazardous waste sites. Area 3includes parts of the cities of Alhambra, SanGabriel, Temple City, San Marino, South Pasa-dena, and Rosemead. The groundwater contami-nation is the result of decades of handling anddisposal practices that released volatile organiccompounds, or VOCs, into the soil and ground-water. VOCs are commonly used in dry clean-ing, paint stripping, metal plating, and machin-ery degreasing. Contaminants found in Area 3include the VOCs trichloroethylene (TCE) andtetrachloroethylene (PCE).

Despite the contamination, water suppliersin the San Gabriel Valley continue to providecustomers with clean water by shutting downwells in contaminated areas, treating water toremove contaminants, blending water to meetdrinking water standards, and obtaining water

Is my drinkingwater safe?

Yes! All drinking water it provided bywater utilities in San Gabriel Valleycommunities meets current Federal andState drinking water standards.

from neighboring suppliers or utilities.

Area 3 Remedial Investigation andFeasibility Study

After adding the San Gabriel Valley sites tothe National Priorities List, EPA began efforts, called the Remedial Investigation/FeasibilityStudy (RJ/FS), to determine the nature andextent of soil and groundwater contaminationand the potential for harm to the public, toidentify sources of contamination, to develop abasin-wide plan to set cleanup priorities, and todevelop alternatives for cleaning up the contami-nation.

EPA began the RI/FS for Area 3 in 1999and is currently searching for sources of contami-nation throughout the area. Several area busi-nesses have completed soil gas testing and arebeginning groundwater testing to determine thepotential for contamination of groundwaterbeneath their facilities. The next step, as notedabove, is to install groundwater monitoring wellsto collect data to help assess the extent of thecontamination and its relationship to suspectedsources in the area.
