The Central Statistical Organization in collaboration with the Directorates of Economics and Statistics of various States/UT Governments conducted the 5th Economic Census throughout the country in 2005 with a view to collect broad information for both organized sector and unorganized sector, and to prepare a frame of agricultural and non-agricultural establishments, except crop production and plantation according to 4-digit of NIC-2004, for taking up follow-up census and surveys to collect detailed information on various parameters relating to the organized and unorganized sectors of the economy. While the All India report is being published separately, this Fact Sheet presents the key indicators for the State of Tripura along with the all India comparable figures. The results of the 5th Economic Census conducted in Tripura reveal that in the year 2005 there were 189,423 establishments of which 10,470 are agricultural establishments and 178,953 are non-agricultural establishments. When compared with the results of the Fourth Economic Census conducted in 1998, the compound annual growth rate of establishments during the period 1998-2005 was of the order of 8.88%. The number of persons engaged in these 189,423 establishments was of the order of 385,708 of which 18,022 are in agricultural establishments and 367,686 are in the non-agricultural establishments. Employment grew at the rate of 7.87% per annum during the period 1998-2005. Details of rural, urban break-up both for the year 1998 and 2005 are given in the table on the next page.

The provisional figures of Economic Census for all the States were released by the Government of India on June 12, 2006. The data presently released are based on actual processing of data using ICR technology and thus there may be some difference with the figures earlier published through quick manual tabulation using Establishment Abstract schedule of EC-2005.
