Engaging online students
Possible Models:
Face to face induction – one session only
Two face to face sessions – induction & one other
Fully online – no face to face
Engaging fully online students
Pre week – the week immediately prior to course starting
Purpose – to ensure all students can: get into the TAFE VC post on the discussion board send an email attachment use all technology required
Pre Week – 3 emails
Email 1. Welcome to the course
Introduce teacher & technical support
Request student to email a photo of themselves – will go on photoboard
Advise them to expect a parcel in mail
Email 2
Information only:
TAFE VC ID and password
Next email will inform you when VC is open
Headsets in mail out – watch for them
Email 3
VC now open – go in and find Welcome discussion board and introduce yourself
Elluminate – explain what it is – headsets in mail – offer at least 2 trial times to test elluminate
What is visible in the VC module
Pre week – only photoboard, welcome discussion & elluminate link for trialling
Week 1 – day of first elluminate session open up the first unit
First elluminate session
Introduce everyone
Teacher’s knowledge of students important
Explain course, structure, RPL opportunities
First elluminate session
Application share to demonstrate navigation on VC module and where to find assignments and toolbox
Explanation of learning activities and assessment tasks for the 1st unit
After 1st elluminate session
Email about how wonderful the 1st session was
Recording link
Attachment of documents of ‘How to…’ for the VC
Pattern of communication
Contact those not engaging about week 3, again at week 7
Emails about ‘special’ occurrences – guest presenters
Emails about particular RPL possibilities
