Facebook > Power Editor How to: Create and publish a Facebook post We use the Facebook Power Editor to create linked photo posts on the Trends Facebook page, like the one above. This is slightly more complicated than posting directly to our Facebook page, but the advantage is that it gives us precise control over all aspects of the post. Also, clicking anywhere on the resulting image, headline or description will take a user to the link destination (myTrends) – exactly what we want. Facebook > Create a post Facebook: What you’ll need

(1) an image sized 475w x 250h (or if possible bigger with same ratio: 1200w x 630h, 600w x 315h)

(2) link URL (where you want to send people) (3) text for the post (4) headline to go under image (5) description* (optional – at your discretion) Facebook: (1) Create a post 1. Go to the Power Editor in your browser. 2. Click Cancel on the pop-up that appears. 3. Select Trends Ideas in the column on the left. 4. Select Create Post.

5. Enter the URL, Post Text, Link Headline, Display Link* and Description (optional).

(*Display link for myTrends content should be trendsideas.com) 6. Select Upload image. 7. Drag your image into the drag and drop box (or click Select image to locate). 8. Select This post will be published on the Page.

Facebook > Publish a post Facebook: (2) Publish a post Now that you have created a post, you can either publish it straight away or schedule it to appear on the Page some time in the future. 1. Select the post you have just created (it will be at the top of the list you see.) 2. Check everything is as it should be in the Post Preview that appears (*see below). 3. Click Publish Post.

4. To post immediately, click Publish. 5. To schedule for later, select Schedule a time to publish, enter a date and time, then click Publish.

Facebook > Publish a post *Help, I made a mistake while creating a Facebook post If you made a mistake when creating the post, you’ll need to start again. Select the post in the Power Editor list and click Delete Post, then start from the beginning again. One exception: if you’ve only made a mistake in the Post Text field you can avoid starting all over again. (Though you may prefer to – up to you.) Here’s how:

- What you’ll need to do is schedule the post for some time in the future, go to the Trends Facebook page and click on Posts at the top to view scheduled posts. - Click on the post and then click Edit. - You will be able to edit the Post Text. - Make corrections then click Save. - Now you have the option of leaving the post scheduled as is, or clicking Edit again and publishing it straight away or rescheduling.

All our Facebook posts are made up of the same elements – an image, some text and a link. For our purposes, the biggest differentiating factor is where the link leads. There are lots of options. Here are some: - an article on myTrends - a video on myTrends - a Snapshots collection (web content reposted on myTrends) - a Your Guide To What’s New collection (web content reposted on myTrends) - the myTrends Project landing page - a search wall result on myTrends - myTrends homepage (trendsideas.com) - external website (rarely) Shortening links in post text If you want to include a link in your post text, shorten long myTrends URLs using the Google URL shortener – http://goo.gl (an absolute imperative when putting a link in a tweet). Times of day to post Feel free to experiment with posting at different times of the day. The majority of our Facebook audience are in NZ and Australia, so good times to post include 10am, 2pm, 4pm, 6-7pm, 9pm. Tracking Facebook posts Facebook Insights can help you track post engagement and other stats. Access this through the menu bar at the top of the Facebook Page. There is also a shared spreadsheet where you can record posts and view them next to myTrends stats (which you’ll need to grab from Google Analytics).

Facebook > General info Facebook posts are on the left. Stats drawn from Facebook and myTrends Google Analytics are on the right. Facebook as a content tester for eDMs Social media can be thought of as a good testing ground for eDM content. When looking for content to feature in myTrends eDMs, check what has generated the most engagement on Facebook during the previous week.

Facebook > Other social networks Other social networks: Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, Tumblr We also have pages on these social networks, however compared to Facebook the engagement they generate and the traffic they send to myTrends is (currently) negligible. This doesn’t mean we should neglect them, but in comparison we need to give Facebook the majority of our time. Twitter has the biggest following, so it is worth posting there at least a few times a week or even once a day if manageable. You can simply take a Facebook post and adapt it for Twitter (or Google+ or Tumblr etc.) The aim, as always, is to get people to click through to myTrends.
