FACEBOOK PAGE CHECKLIST

What you need for your Fan Page before you start

❏ Big panoramic picture for your Timeline Cover (can be one image, or a montage that includes photos/stock graphics, logo, and text) ❏ Smaller photo of you (should be professional photo, not just a logo)

Settings ❏ Posting Preferences (recommended: ‘always post as page’) ❏ Email notifications Manage Permissions Included are what I feel are the most important. You may change any settings you wish. ❏ Posting Ability (recommended: check boxes ‘Everyone can post to Page’;

‘Everyone can add photos/videos’) ❏ Post Visibility (recommended: check box ‘Show box for “recent posts by

others”’) ❏ Tagging Ability (recommended: check box ‘ People can tag photos posted

by Fan Page’) *** NOTE if you UNCHECK this, people will not be able to ‘@tag’ you and give attribution/credit

❏ Show “Messages” button – I would recommend you use this feature BUT

ONLY if you plan to check your Page regularly so you can respond within a reasonable time.

❏ Moderation Blocklist; Profanity – at your own discretion Basic Information ❏ Category (If you change your mind, you can now chose a different Page

type and subcategory) ❏ Official Page (leave blank) – this is if you are making a “fan” page, ie for Lady Gaga or for Coca Cola, but you don’t own the company ❏ Username (your Page’s URL – you need 25 fans to set your Username)

* Be certain of spelling and what you choose because you cannot change this – it is a domain name!

i.e. BrightSparkSocialMedia is my Username, and my URL is http://Facebook.com/BrightSparkSocialMedia which I can include on my business card, in my email signature, in other Social Media channels, etc.

❏ Name (Page Name – you can change this up until you reach 100 fans.

Best if you include your industry keywords, not just your business name.) My Page Name is: Bright Spark Media ❙ Social Media Marketing for your

Business ❏ About – this section is important. You have 140 characters that will show

under your Page Name and Cover Photo. Use industry keywords, your website link, and a call to action.

❏ Website – you can list more than one, so include your email address,

Twitter handle, LinkedIn account, blog. Fill in as much information as you can in the Description, Mission Statement, Company Overview, Founded, Awards and Products (you may not have all sections, it depends on your Page Category chosen) sections, using your industry keywords, clients you’ve done work for (‘Our client list includes XYZ, ABC, 123’), your ideal client (‘We help businesses, professionals, and entrepreneurs to use Social Media to grow their business. Contact us if you are looking for Social Media coaching or training workshops, Social Media strategy or setup, corporate or event photography, or promotional videos.’) Featured ❏ Add “Featured Page Owner” – people do business with people, so be

sure to show the face of your company. ❏ Add “Featured Likes” – once you start “liking” other Pages, you can choose which ones to feature, or you can leave the to rotate through your Like List. You can like up to 500 Pages, so choose local businesses, strategic alliances, interests, companies in your industry or related field, and influential Pages whom you’d like to do business with or keep an eye on, which includes your competitors. Manage Admins ❏ You can add an Admin (Spouse, business partner, trusted friend) either by entering their email here, or once they have ‘liked’ the Page an option appears to “make admin”. I would recommend you choose at least one, in case for whatever reason you can no longer access your Facebook Personal Profile. Sometimes it can take a week to fix a Facebook glitch and your Fan Page is more important than your website!

Page Name vs Username Choose your Username as soon as possible, but give it some consideration in terms of keywords and “typability” first. Your Username is a short, easy to remember name, that you can use in your email signature or on business cards. It’s basically a domain name registration. You can only change it once, so be sure it’s right! Put some capitals in to separate words and make it more readable - your URL does show up exactly as typed, but it is not actually case sensitive so customers can enter all small text when searching for you. For example, my Page Name is: Bright Spark Media | Social Media Marketing for Your Business My Username is: BrightSparkSocialMedia, so the link (URL or domain name) I would use for clients to find me is http://www.facebook.com/BrightSparkSocialMedia

• https://www.facebook.com/help/pages/usernames Here is a blog post explaining how to choose a good Username and Page Name. http://socialmediamarketingkelowna.com/facebook-tip-page-name-vs-username/ Cover Photo Your panoramic cover photo is valuable real estate on your Page so make sure you take advantage of it! You want to WOW potential customers when they see your Page for the first time. However, there are strict guidelines as to what is allowed on your Cover Image. They are so important, that I’ve copied the rules from Facebook’s Terms and Conditions for you.

UPDATE: As of July 1st, 2013 – Facebook now allows the following on their Facebook cover photos:

• text, • calls to action, • arrows pointing to LIKE button, or to promotional offer • website and contact details, • sales and discount offers

Here are some suggestions for your Cover Photo:

• You might change your Cover Photo with the seasons; sporting finals/playoffs; holidays

• Make a montage – of your staff or the clients you serve • When you have a promotion, workshop, new product or service

Apps (Applications, formerly called Tabs) These are also very important in creating not only a good customer experience, but in converting potential customers to into sales. After all, that’s the goal of your Fan Page, right? (We’re not just here to make “friends”.)

There are 2 Apps that you cannot change:

• Photos – this one always appears as the first App at the left. The photo that appears is always the most recently added image.

• Likes – you cannot change or delete this App, but you can change the location of where it appears.

o If you don’t have many fans or “likes” you might not want to draw attention to it, so you would move it into the “hidden” Apps section.

There are many other standard Facebook Apps (as well as 3rd Party apps), such as:

• Events • Videos (ones that you’ve uploaded directly to Facebook, not to YouTube) • Notes

(You may have to go to ‘Admin Panel’, then choose ‘Apps’ from the menu at the left to see others that are not active.)
