Zion Bar-El
Founder of Ideation International Inc.
Chairman since April, 1996
Today, business environment is characterized by rapid change and leveraging of knowledge-based assets.
Time to market and relevant intellectual property have become crucial elements for competitiveness. To be
successful, an enterprise must be able to respond instantly to the dynamics of the global markets – that is
to be capable of “Innovation Upon Demand” and meet the needs of all customers.
One of the most important and most difficult issues facing organizations today is the problem of
innovation. Although commonly denied in public, it is discussed in length and deeply lamented in private
with top managers acknowledging that their organizations are failing at innovation and particularly in
making substantial leaps that are required for a continuous innovation.
Although, there is a universal agreement about the importance of innovation and R&D and about the vital
role both play in the growth, survival and persistence of companies and nations; current practice has fallen
into tenuous state of frustration because the recent track record has been so embarrassingly bad.
American companies have wasted billions of dollars on failed attempts to innovate, which shows just
spending more money does not help if the assumptions are incorrect, or the process is flawed.
Other evidence points to a fundamental problem with product conception; detailed analysis has shown
that it takes as many as 3000 raw ideas to produce one lonely commercial success. Measuring
downstream, it seems that of every four projects that enter the development stage only one becomes
commercially successful. Learning from failures may have led to ultimate successes but the cost is clearly
expensive and the returns have not been adequate. In some industries, 80% of all innovations originate
from customers rather than the producers. In the software industry only 60% of all projects are completed
on time. To get a better focus on customer needs, R&D is often integrated into the business marketing unit;
but this decentralized and incremental approach has also failed to achieve the desired results in most
companies. The US department of commerce reports that 90% of new products fail within four years and
| www.FaceInnovation.net | 248.613.3251
less than 10% of US companies have even bothered to produce new products in the past 10 years. It is
clear that there is a serious problem in the practice of innovation and it would not be an exaggeration to
say that most corporations are pushing a rope at it without success. The wide spread failure of innovation
leaves out a strategist with the following options:
• To increase value in existing global markets through market share warfare
• To reduce cost through downsizing, and outsourcing
• To reduce costs through process improvements, and quality improvements
• To enhance performance using methods and tools such as information technology
In lieu of the above, Ideation International (Detroit, USA) presents itself as the undisputed world leader
in developing the innovation methodology with software platform called Office of Innovation® that
provides a structured process for adapting continuous innovation that is dramatic, immediate and
valuable. It delivers on the premise to:
• Reduce the time and money required to solve technical problems
• Guaranteed, simple, and elegant conceptual solutions
• Overcome psychological barriers
• Develop a bank of intellectual properties that can be strategically leveraged
• Foresees future problems
• Create a comprehensive vision of future possibilities
• Objectively judge proposed innovations
• Substantially increase effectiveness of research and strategic product development
• Identify and position an enterprise for sustained competitive advantage
• Make the right decisions more effectively, quickly and easily
• Find strategic directions for investment
• Predict competitors’ developments
• Identify and eliminate shortcomings of an existing system
• Preserve the positive characteristics of an existing system
• Simplify a system
• Provide an objective evaluation of technical alternatives
• Organize, improve and greatly expedite the process of conceptual design
• Validate the organic growth and increase market share of the enterprise
On November 8, 2017 Ideation is celebrating its 25th year birthday.
Ideation’s 25 year history can be divided into four distinct periods that each made
a major impact as the company restructured with new strategies and major
accomplishments.
Prehistory: TRIZ and Genrich Altshuller
In an effort to discover generic rules for innovation, Russian engineer, inventor,
and scientist, Genrich Altshuller, began studying patents and technological
evolution in 1946. By the 1970s he had become the intellectual leader of a group
| www.FaceInnovation.net | 248.613.3251
of Russian scholars and practitioners involving themselves in the study of problem solving, invention, and
innovation. Collectively this effort is called TRIZ (pronounced “trees”) which is a Romanized acronym for
the Russian phrase Teoriya Resheniya Izobretatelskikh Zadatch meaning “the theory of inventor’s problem
solving.”
TRIZ encapsulates a set of methodologies, knowledgebase, and a set of tools to assist efforts in system
analysis, problem formulation, and idea generation. The overall goal of TRIZ has been to develop and refine
an algorithmic approach to invention and innovative problem solving that could be understood and used by
anyone.
Prehistory: Kishinev Era
Two of most important founders and the cause why Ideation is still going strong are Boris Zlotin and Alla
Zusman.
Boris Zlotin in 1974 has become a TRIZ devotee, started teaching problem solving to company engineers, in
1978 has begun scientific collaboration as a scientist, co-teacher and co-author with TRIZ founder G.
Altshuller.
Alla Zusman - over 30 years in TRIZ application, research and development (since 1981).
Both of them have developed a close tie with Genrich Altshuler.
Boris and Alla in 1982 have started a TRIZ Research School in Kishinev, Moldova, that have become the
biggest one in Soviet Union and the first to provide analytical services to industrial companies, in 1986 –
have founded “Progress” (with V. Proseanic and S. Visnepolschi) – the first TRIZ company in the world.
The Ideation era (ITRIZ) began in 1992 and continues today.
1. Nov 1992 – March 1996
During this period the five original founders were:
Boris Zlotin, CTO and VP Engineering
Alla Zusman, VP Product Development
Zion Bar-El, VP Sales
Don Simms, CEO and President
Mark Harrison, VP Marketing
During the first five years, Ideation was extremely occupied with translating TRIZ educational program
developed by Boris Zlotin and Alla Zusman from Russian to English, developing the education program
based on TRIZ and developing the software tools to support it. The best accomplishments during the first
five years were providing education and analytical services to fortune 500 companies such as Allied Signals,
Ford Motor Company, GM, P&G,
Air Force, American Suppliers Institute, PEICO, Chrysler, AC Johnson, 10 year contract with SANNO
University in Japan and starting the Ideation of Taiwan and China. Total revenue in this period was $2
million USD.

2. April 1996 – Dec 2006
Zion Bar-El, Chairman and President
Boris Zlotin, CTO and VP Engineering
Alla Zusman, VP Product Development
Major accomplishments of this period were 15 projects with Ford Motor Co. and Training 1000
professionals; 13 projects with GM and training 1000 professionals; 3 projects with Chrysler and training
100 professionals; corporate agreement with BP Amoco from 1996 to 1999 with 49 completed projects and
289 trained professionals; 3 projects with Johnson & Johnson and training 100 professionals. The total
number of professionals trained in Ideation TRIZ exceeded 50,000 in this period. A network of 21 resellers
in 21 countries was established and generated over $18 million USD in revenue.
3. 2007 – 2016
Ideation Japan was formed in 2007 by Terry Kamimura as founder and president. Terry was added to the
Ideation’s board of directors as vice-chairman. He invested in Ideation Inc. about $500,000 USD in training
eight Japanese I-TRIZ specialists and to gain equity in Ideation. Terry and Zion have been doing everything
in collaboration in terms of planning and strategy. Largest corporate customers in Japan were Hitachi, Fuji,
Honda, Toyota, Minolta, and Canon. During this period more than $10 million USD was generated
collectively.
4. 2017 - 2022
After a very intense analysis of what had happened in the past 25 years and three decades of innovation
crisis that started in the early 70’s, the growth of TRIZ and Ideation deemed to be very slow and very
limited in its present form of marketing and delivery. Despite its proven effectiveness in solving complex
technological problems; we estimate that no more than 100,000 TRIZ professionals have been trained
during our 25 years in place of expected millions working in the client industries. It is our strong opinion
that the situation poses an ideal opportunity to form a great community of trained innovators,
independent of industrial corporations, under the new enterprise “Face Innovation” specifically developed
by Ideation International. This is an imperative progression of our economy transferring into the age of
“innovation Workers” as described in a recent article by Ideation TRIZ specialist and academic scholar Dr.
Ron Fulbright from the University of South Carolina.

To establish a standard to be adopted by institutions and industrial companies, innovation and creative
thinking should become a structured process capable of solving complex technological problems and
continuous innovation. As Dr. Ron Fulbright suggests in a recent article, every individual that has a brain,
once he has the right knowledge and the tools, can invent on demand. Over the last 25 years, I developed
close relationship with many professionals that share the belief and same opinion on how world could be
enriched with an extremely large community that shares a commitment to helping train the future
innovators and make the world more creative and innovative. My close colleagues and I, share the hunger
of recruiting one million new members in the next five years.
Vision. What do we want to be? We wish to become the largest community for innovators and other professionals who shares the passion
to become an innovator. The organization that we are creating will help you to meet other innovators
around the globe, form product development teams and help licensing the inventions discovered by these
members. We have all the resources in place to help you follow the journey of taking your good ideas into
real prototypes, commercialization and licensing of the final product. Face Innovation will take care of all
the IP works and the cost of it as well as finding enterprises and to negotiate licensing the final product.
Values. What do we believe in? We strongly believe that we have several major strengths as follows:
I. Market size and its segments: we have not done a detailed demographics of all the counties in the
world and how many potential prospects are out there to become our member. We believe in the
| www.FaceInnovation.net | 248.613.3251
worst case scenario that is we can recruit, out of the 3.4 Billion internet users worldwide, at least 100
million qualified prospects.
II. That Ideation International has the best educational offering for TRIZ inventive problem solving (IPS)
and creative thinking. Ideation has developed the best curriculum, the best documentations and the
best software tools.
III. We have customized our educational training so that can bring it in a distant learning format to the
masses. It is a 30 hours program with 16 hours given in eight online lessons with a private instructor
and 14 hours that you should dedicate to solving practice exercises. Every trained professional could
easily become a trainer with a little practice and problem solving experience.
IV. It is highly recommend that every new member should get engaged as much as possible in educating
others on Invention on Demand. Face Innovation community is a private and exclusive club that does
not stop at idea generation but continues to be involved with every member until there is a business
built around it, generating wealth for the inventor, its team and the community.
Mission. What are we going to do? • Networking, networking and networking.
• Contacting all existing users.
• Contacting all the engineering and professional associations
• Working to establish global network of “National Innovation Centers”, Nigeria, Mexico and New
Zealand are just the immediate potentials
• Contacting High schools, community colleges and Universities in all target markets
• Strategic alliance with other product development societies such as Lean, six sigma, SME, ASME, IEEE,
…
• Working with global STEM communities in US and other parts of the world
• Dealing with countries in economic turmoil such as Greece, Spain, Eastern Europe
