But you don’t have to be a celeb with a personal trainer to rock a goddess-like body. Our fat-blast- ing fitness gurus give you three different options to tighten and tone those elusive ab muscles, so dance, diet or do traditional cardio: Each of these options, or even a combi- nation of the three (do what works for you!) requires no crunches, only tips that work. Shape up, thin out Targeting your body’s core can be simplified for your busy lifestyle. “It’s all about dieting and cardio,” said Rahman “Ray” Grayson, president and CEO of Athletes and Entertainers in Motion (A.E.I.M.) in Atlanta, Georgia. Ray, who has helped shape up talents like Ciara and LeToya Luckett, focuses on getting the body as lean as possible rather than spot-treating flab. He said you have to “hit the abs from all angles” by working the obliques and lower back to define the mid-section. To do so, Ray recommends low and high intensity car- dio workouts for 45 minutes a day, three days a week. Using an elliptical machine, walking a treadmill and stair climbing are low intensity. Jumping rope at a rapid pace, running sprints (on a treadmill or track) or running uphill are high intensity. Or, you can do two to three sets each of his favorite exercises, which are bicycles (20 reps per side), seated oblique twists (20 reps per side), core planks (45 to 60 seconds) and hanging knee raises (10 to 15 reps). Ray’s workouts set your body in motion and elevate the heart rate. Instead of two hours at the gym, you work your entire body in 40 minutes. Switch your exercises every two weeks for variety, then notice a difference in four to six weeks. Still, “It’s not about the scale,” Ray stressed. “Your abs may look better and the weight may only be one or two pounds different, but it’s about how you look.” Dance off the pounds Hip-Hop Abs creator Shaun T of New York City believes you can have a blast while blasting off fat in just 60 days. He said that 30-45 minutes of dance, even if it’s just in your living room, is great cardio for getting the blood flowing. His Hip-Hop Abs cardio program demonstrates “Shaun T’s 3 T’s”: tilt, tuck and tighten. The body sculpting dance exercises supersede crunches and sit-ups, which can strain the neck and back. “Crunches don’t work,” Shaun T said. “They’re uncom- fortable and people don’t do them correctly. It only works the top part of the abdominal area and people usually want to focus on the ‘pooch’ area.” To keep it fun, though, Shaun T recommends either making up short routines with your friends at home or heading out for a night on the town at your favorite local hot spot. “You’re still burning calories,” he said. And he advised that you diversify your dance styles: Rather than sticking to straight hip-hop moves, try out a salsa dance or two “’cause salsa is fun, it’s fast … it just has high energy.” To keep those abs in check while keeping in time with the beat, Shaun said tighten up! “Constantly engage your core,” he said. “When your dancing … constantly keep your core tight … it’s a workout in itself.” S2S Health by Margie Monin Dombrowski (Photo by Kateryna Govorushchenko A lean diet—just try it Sculpting your abs means working on your diet too. “Sexy abs is 80 per- cent food and 20 percent workout,” said A.J.
