Fairbanks Film Festival The fourth Annual Fairbanks Film Festival, or F3, is here!
Fairbanks Arts Association is proud to announce that the Fairbanks Film Festival, also known as F3, is scheduled to take place on Labor Day, Monday, September 7, 2009 at 5pm. The Festival was born in 2006, following one of Fairbanks Arts Association’s Cinema Committee meetings, during which several members of the committee expressed a wish for having a showcase event for the growing number of Alaskan filmmakers in Fairbanks.
This year Fairbanks Arts Assoc ia t ion had th ree wonderful jurors. Two, Katie Pride and Kathryn Harris, have been past jurors for F3. Katie has many years experience in the film industry as a part of the Sundance Film Festival team and Cine Vegas, the popular Las Vegas Festival, as well as with various crew work for both feature and independent films. Kathryn is a well known Fairbanks community member, a radio DJ on Magic 101.1 as well as KIAK.FM’s morning show “Pete the Cruiser and Kathryn”. The final F3 juror is Pat Race from Juneau. Pat makes short
films and illustrates the Alaska Robotics comic. He studied computer science at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and screenwriting at The Film School, was named to Alaska’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2006 and was a founding member of the Juneau Underground Motion Picture Society.
This year all submissions for F3 fell into one of five categories: Documentary, Short, Animation, K-12 Short and K-12 Feature. A “Best of” will be awarded in each category along with a Cinema Committee Choice Award and winners will be announced
The Award Ceremony and screening of winners’ films will take place on Monday, September 7th, at 5 pm in the Alaska Centennial Center for the Arts Theater at Pioneer Park. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. This year’s F3 is shaping up to be a very exciting event, so please come out and support all your local filmmakers!

Gift Shop Artist of the Month: Doris Pfalmer I learned to throw pottery on the wheel in high school, but didn’t touch clay again until 25 years later. By that time, I had started collecting “clay tools” like marker lids, lock washers, Legos, beads, and anything else I thought might make a cool mark in clay. Seeing patterns in ordinary objects has become second nature to me. I find tools in the oddest places, like a piece of plastic inside a smashed video tape in a driveway near my house, which I use to make an Aztec-looking god, or a black binder clip, which I use to make a cartoon face with two eyes and big nose. I normally have trouble sitting still for any length of time, but when I work with clay, I can sit for hours making pattern after pattern. I love doing my own work, but my real joy is taking my tools into schools and working with kids and clay. Seeing children get so excited about the marks they make in projects they didn’t think they could make in the first place is one of my biggest joys. There’s just nothing like teaching art to kids.
In today’s economic climate, families need to make every dollar count. That’s why the University of Alaska Museum of the North and the Fairbanks North Star Borough public libraries launched a new program this summer to make the museum more accessible to families. Borough residents with current library cards can now check out museum passes at the Noel Wien and North Pole branch libraries as well as from the library book mobile. The passes, which provide free admission for two adults and up to four children from the same household, can be checked out for two weeks and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The passes include admission to the museum’s
special exhibits. “The Last Polar Bear: Facing the Truth of a Warming World” runs through Saturday, October 3.
”Ascension: Exploring the Art of Denali” opens October 10 in the special exhibits gallery and runs through January 30.
In addition to the library passes, museum memberships offer an economical way to visit the museum – a $75 annual family membership will pay for itself if your family visits the museum more than twice a year.
Volunteer opportunity: The museum is looking for volunteers to lead school tour programs this fall. No experience is necessary. Free training will be provided August 31 through September 11. For more information, call 474-5360.

New Work: The Adventures into Alter Ego.
This body of work came out of living in a small cabin and hiking in the woods with my dog. It always amazes me how things and perspectives change when you are alone among the trees. Your mind always wanders into imaginary worlds dreaming up what is hiding behind the trees. The ordinary, everyday grind and worries seem to disappear and you are left with just yourself, stripped of the many faces you put on during the day. The drawings for this show are a series of visions that happened during those hikes. Since the subject matter, “The Adventures into Alter Ego”, is somewhat unusual, my objective for this work was to use unconventional materials in the creative process to complement it. Exploring different media was just as much fun as it was transferring the visions on paper and the process itself became a sort of conversation between the subject matter, materials and myself. This work is not meant to be taken seriously or literally (as any art really) and I hope it will be as enjoyable exploring it as it was for me to create it.

Nancy Burnham
Burnham was raised in Massachusetts
where she studied to become a
registered nurse. After working as
a nurse for 10 years she pursued
her dream to become a working
artist. She studied in Fairbanks and
Vermont where she received an MFA
in Studio Arts. This study opened
up a world of possibilities. She has
worked in several media, but has a
particular attachment to painting,
most especially encaustic painting.
She often incorporates organic
forms while she explores the
concepts of her personal history
and the influence of a nursing
background. After a hiatus from
painting for a year, she has created
this body of work as a reintroduction
to ideas and materials.

Helen Howard was born in North Cornwall, England and moved to Fairbanks in 1964. She was the Project Secretary for the Musk Ox Project started that year by John Teal, Jr. and taught qiviut knitting as well as helping to start the Oomingmak cooperative. She became interested in watercolors through the Fairbanks Watercolor Society after retiring from UAF’s Alaska Native Language Center in 1999. She has taken workshops and classes from a number of well-known artists and she especially enjoys painting outdoors. She finds watercolor a challenge but enjoyable to use and
has had three solo shows. Most recently she has had prints made of one of her paintings, “Polar Bear Awash”, as a gentle reminder that we should do what we can to slow climate warming as it not only affects the bears but is causing the coastal erosion of villages.
sue ColeI joke and tell people that I have Artistic ADD- I’m always trying
something different in art. Currently I am experimenting with marbling on paper and fabric as well as learning different aspects of bookbinding and other book arts. Additionally, I’ve recently taken on painting murals. I have completed an 11’x 7’ foot wall of Chinese Bamboo and, most recently, a 6’ foot single fireweed. I love to teach, both one-on-one and classroom style. I teach knitting and crochet as well as all kinds of art and give driving lessons.
Life is a constant challenge and inspiration and I especially enjoy taking part in trying to capture different aspects of it. You can forget about your problems and even time while you are making art, which is one of the things that fascinates me most about it.

I’ve lived in Fairbanks just two years, and
I am still learning my way around. I have
found the Arts Association and Bear Gallery
to be an important part of the cultural life
here and volunteering at the Bear Gallery is
one way to make my small contribution to the
arts, even though I am not an artist.
