SCRIPTURE READINGS Third Sunday of Lent Reflection

The Laws of the Lord are Perfect

Rev. Victor C. Yakubu, Parochial Vicar

After many years of practice, the laws of any nation can be reviewed and updated to meet modern demands. Congress can pass legislation amending such obsolete laws with the consent of the executive before their legality is recognized. In the laws of God, change is a strange word. God’s laws cannot be changed because they speak to every generation in the same manner they did to ancient listeners. It’s important to respect sacred laws and sacred places like the house of God.

In today’s gospel Jesus began by doing the unusual. He overturned the tables of the moneychangers in the temple for disrespecting a sacred insti-tution. In Jewish history, the temple was respected by all and nobody dared to dishonor it. The temple was used for sacrifices for all kinds of sins. To meet this demand, people had to buy different kinds of animals for such important moments. The moneychangers capitalized on this need by extorting extra sums from the people who were desperate to offer sacrifice. The Roman au-thorities also were eager to collect taxes from such events because the nation-al treasury had many demands for cash. So the temple was transformed into a cash cow in that sense.

The action of Jesus was a reminder to those moneychangers and merchants of this grave dishonor to a sacred place. Instead of reducing the weight of sin on the people, they added financial weight on their shoul-ders. After overturning their tables, Jesus told them, “Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” The intention of estab-lishing the temple was to atone for sins and not to make it a business center. And since the Jews demanded for a sign for doing what he did, Jesus gave them a food for thought, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” By this declaration, Jesus was touching on an important aspect of Jewish history. It wasn’t the temple he spoke of but His own body.

King Herod rebuilt the temple in Jerusalem after it was left desolate for ages. According to Jewish history, Herod loved to build and he assisted in rebuilding the second temple. Herod’s Temple, as it was referred to, was eventually destroyed in 70 A.D. by Titus, the commander of the Ro-man legions. The remnant of it stands the Temple Mount and the Wailing Wall today in Israel.

The Jews loved the temple. Such love for the temple should inspire us to love the commandments of the Lord. When Moses received the Ten Commandments from God, he brought them as reminders of what the Lord expects of us. These laws are not meant to stop our happiness or strain our relationships. The laws are for our happiness and eternal joy with God in heaven. Obeying the laws makes us stronger and spiritually motivated to keep working for our eternal salvation.

St. Paul reminded us that even as the Jews demanded for a sign and the Greeks looked for wisdom, Jesus Christ has satisfied our yearn-ing for signs. God chose to reveal himself to us by following unusual means through the Incarnation to teach us that he’s always seeking our good. By obeying his laws and commands, we find perfect fulfillment in this life and forever.

Zig Ziglar said, “If God would have wanted us to live in a permissive society He would have given us Ten Suggestions and not Ten Commandments.” The Ten Commandments should make us love God with all our hearts and love our neighbors as we love ourselves. President Ronald Reagan summarized what happens today when we make law. “I have won-dered at times what the Ten Commandments would have looked like if Moses had run them through the US congress.” You get the point? Then be the judge.

Keep smiling!

Per the request of parishioners who work early and would like to come to Mass in the evening, Fr. Bruno has added the 6:30 p.m. Lenten Mass to our schedule.

We have always had a Mass on Thursday evenings the first and second weeks of each month (not in summer) at the request of Women’s Guild and Harvest House groups. Now we will have this Thursday, 6:30 p.m. Mass every week in our Church, during Lent!

If you are able, please make this a part of your Lenten Journey this year. Please tell your extended family and friends about this new opportunity for Mass in the even-ing. If well attended, this Mass may become a part of our permanent calendar.

“As I go forward with you, Lord, please strengthen the quiet voice of my

Conscience, Your own voice, in my life.

Look at me as You looked at Peter. Let Your gaze penetrate my heart

And indicate the direction my life must take. . .

Grant me, ever anew, the grace of conversion.”

An Examination of Conscience This section has been prepared as a spiritual tool for Adults, High School Students, Teachers, Chaplains, Priests, those who are preparing to re-ceive the Sacrament of Confession and those who teach on the subject.

Conditions for the Sacrament of Confession. To properly receive the Sacrament of Confession, one must:

1. Examine his/her conscience. (To do this, one can review the

Ten Commandments of God and the Commandments of the Church.)

2. Have a sincere sorrow for having offended God, with a detestation of

one's sins.

3. Make a firm resolution to avoid sin in the future and all the dangerous

circumstances that lead to sin.

4. Confess one's sins to the priest.

5. Be willing to do penance for the past sins in order to satisfy the Divine

The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation CCC 1440 Sin is before all else an offense against God, a rupture of communion with him. At the same time it damages communion with the Church. For this reason conversion entails both God's forgiveness and reconciliation with the Church, which are expressed and accom-plished liturgically by the sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation.38 Only God forgives sin CCC 1441 Only God forgives sins.39 Since he is the Son of God, Jesus says of himself, "The Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins" and exercises this divine power: "Your sins are forgiven."40 Further, by virtue of his divine authority he gives this power to men to exercise in his name.41 CCC 1442 Christ has willed that in her prayer and life and action his whole Church should be the sign and instrument of the forgiveness and reconciliation that he acquired for us at the price of his blood. But he entrusted the exercise of the power of absolution to the apostolic minis-try which he charged with the "ministry of reconciliation."42 The apos-tle is sent out "on behalf of Christ" with "God making his appeal" through him and pleading: "Be reconciled to God."43

THE DIVINE MERCY PRAYER GROUP

"Whoever has not begun the practice of prayer, I beg for the love of the Lord

not to go without so great a good. There is nothing here to fear but only

something to desire." (Saint Teresa of Avila)

As a positive action during Lent, be a part of the

Divine Mercy Prayer Group. Join us any Thursday @ 2:30 p.m. in

the Library. (meetings are about 30 minutes long)

Foster Care – Unaccompanied Migrant Children

Vulnerable children deserve our loving support, as followers of Christ, regardless of how they came into their circumstanc-es. Catholic Charities Community Ser-vices sees the continuing influx of unac-companied minors crossing the border to this country as a Humanitarian Crisis. While the sheer numbers demand that we respond creatively and quickly, you might be interested to know that we have been serving this population of children since the ‘90’s. We provide a family environment for these children in accordance with our Catholic Social Teaching belief that the best possible care comes from within the strength of the family.

Here is how you can help: 1. Become a foster parent. 2. Volunteer as a mentor, ESL tutor, or any other gift you have to offer. Often times these children have not learned the basic skills for self-sufficiency like cook-ing, shopping, and other life skills. 3. Foster families in The Unaccompanied Minor Program need donations for every day expenses they cannot afford for the children, such as: tutoring, sports activi-ties, music lessons etc... In addition, there are many kids who emancipate out of fos-ter care with HUGE needs. You can do-nate at www.catholiccharitiesaz.org/ump. 4. Spread the word and help us to build a parish ministry that supports unaccompa-nied children and educates others about the special barriers that exist in their lives.

For more information on how you can help, please email Debbie DiCarlo, on Catholic Charities Community Services staff at [email protected] or 602-293-6898 or, if you prefer, contact St. Paul parishioners Lin Stoudt or Ralph Fecke in person, @ [email protected] or 623-582-4610.

Harvest House News: Our next meeting is Thursday, March 12. Mass is at 6:30 pm in the Chapel and the meeting follows in the Conference Center. Ever wonder how crime de-tectives figure out what the bad guy looks like that they are hunting for?? We will have a presentation on Forensic Art by Detective Jim Weege, son of our president Mary Weege and husband Ernie. He is an FBI trained Forensic Artist, com-monly known as a "Sketch Artist," whose sketches are used to apprehend perpetrators in crime detection work. Refreshments will be served and there is time for so-cializing with friends. Thanks to all, including our parishioner customers, who helped with the successful Valentine bake sale.

Men’s Club Breakfast Next Weekend, March 15!

After 8:00 & 9:30 a.m. Masses and before 11 am

Let the Men’s Club

cook breakfast for you!

Fellow Parishioners, your Men's Club provides Sunday Break-fasts 5 times a year — join us! We serve after the 8:00 AM and 9:30 AM Masses and the menu includes: Pancakes, Waffles, Scrambled Eggs, Sausage, Coffee, Tea and Orange Juice and lots of stewardship. It's a terrific way to meet new people and have a good meal at the same time. All our profits return to the parish in form of sacramental needs, elementary school scholar-ship assistance and general parish maintenance needs.

The cost is $6.00 a person, $24.00 per family of 4 or greater. It’s a chance for us to meet you and for you to meet fellow parishioners. Thank you, Men's Club.

This year’s conference theme is FREEDOM: BEING MEN FOR ALL SEASONS. Boston College Professor Peter Kreeft is the headliner and a sellout is expected.

Day of event admission is $56.50 per person, but group discounts, available for groups of 10 or more, reduce the cost to $46.50. Reserved seating will enable parish men’s groups to sit together without arriving together.

Contact Tom Nash at 602-863-4317 to join the St. Paul’s contingent.

We ask your contemplation on becoming a helper of the Rosary Program, not only at this event, but for all the small chores that need to be done to keep the Ro-sary on the air. We collect and store books and bou-tique items, publish a monthly newsletter, record rosar-ies and talks throughout the Diocese, and participate at major Diocesan events. There are small tasks and some not so small that bless us each day with the knowledge that we are serving Our Lady. If you would like to join us, please call: Janet LaPlante at 602-863-1218.
