Services For many companies, the electricity is an important costelement, and a part of the amounts is due to the consumption of reactive energy and poor Power Quality.

All companies that distribute electricity are collecting penalties in the bill of consumption, if the user consumes reactive power over the allowed limits, and few are starting to set limits to harmonic pollution. So today is particularly convenient to install a power factorcorrection and active filters systems effectively, correctly sized, which saves a lot of money and to closely monitor the quality of the energy used within a plant.

But we must not forget the PFC and AHF installed since several years: we must monitor the proper functioningbecause if you do not keep them in perfect working order, they efficiency, and you are likely to pay penalties and have unexpected break downs. With proper maintenance you can avoid wasting money and unnecessary power dissipation in the electric plant cables and transformers that undergoes premature aging.

It is also important a proper maintenance and use of originalspare parts since capacitors, when worn or of poor quality, are likely to burst causing damage to electrical equipment, plant shutdowns due to protection tripping, or even real fire.

Our services:• Site surveis to verify existing power factor correction

systems.• Surveys on electrical systems, as analysis of PFC• Start-up and commissioning of new LV power factor

correction banks and Active Harmonic Filters• Power Quality Analysis in LV installations• Scheduled maintenance on power factor correction

systems • Revamping solutions• Original spare parts• Analysis of the Energy Authority Penalties

Quality ICAR has always regarded product quality and effectiveness of internal processes as key factors of corporate strategy. In ICAR we believe that compliance with international standards is a basic requirement to offer equipment that can meet the needs of our customers.

Quality SystemThe ICAR Quality management system is certif ied according to ISO 9001 since 1994.We participate actively in international standards committees that draft regulations applicable to our production equipment, and in particular to industrial capacitors: this guarantees to be always up with changes in legislation, or rather pre-empt it.

Since 2011 the ICAR quality management system is certified by IRIS (International Railway Industry Standard).Promoted by UNIFE (Association of European companies operating in the railway sector) and supported by operators, system integrators and equipment manufacturers, IRIS integrates the ISO 9001 quality standard introducing additional requirements, specific to the railway industry.

IRIS is modeled on quality standards similar to those already in use in the automotive and aerospace industries.

Independent certification bodies and approved by the promulgators of the standard ensure object iv i ty and transparency in the evaluation.IRIS certification, while being oriented in the rail sector, has a positive effect on the whole ICAR quality system, with

benefits for all types of produced devices.

The valid certificates can be downloaded from the website www.icar.com the section "Company - Quality"

Product quality The equipment produced in ICAR are tested both in our laboratories and in the most important internationally recognized laboratories, in order to ensure compliance with the highest standards.

ACTIVEmatic FA30

Loads operated by electronic devices are increasingly adopted in more and more industrial and commercial applications such as: Variable Speed Drives, rectifiers, UPS systems, DC power supplies, welding machines, computers, TV, energy efficient lamps, photocopiers. These loads generate waveform distortions that become threat for network components.

In particular voltage and current harmonics, where the latter is the more dangerous, generate a series of problems, like:

• Cable overheating.• Undue tripping of circuit breakers.• Blowing of fuses.• Capacitor overloading and network resonance.• Neutral cable overload.• Transformer premature ageing.• Electronic appliances disturbance.

These effects are seldom related to harmonic current and voltage distortion, while effective remedy for harmonics are passive and active filters.Active filters achieve much higher levels of efficiency in harmonics cleaning the first does not.ICAR has developed the ACTIVEmatic FA30 ACTIVE HARMONIC FILTER to combine a high level of efficiency with flexibility of installation.

• Response time less than 300 µs.• Compact, wall mounted (up to 120A) and easy to

install units• Wide range from 30 to 300A in one unit, and

expandable with up to 5 parallel units.• Voltage application from 200V to 690V• Compensation up to the 50th order of harmonic.• 3 or 4 wire (Neutral) models are available• Reactive power compensation• Phase Load balance• Flicker compensation

Main features ACTIVEmatic FA30 ACTIVE HARMONIC FILTER is a solid-state power converter which measures the harmonics current generated by the non-linear load. It generates opposite phase shifted harmonics current of the same amplitude, and so it cancels the loads harmonic current and then obtains a sinusoidal current in the utility, also improving power quality and compensating unbalanced currents.

Instantaneous dynamic response Is derived from IGBT high frequency converter switching at 16KHz using advanced control techniques.

Minimum heat loss. During operation switching losses are less than 6% at full compensation, offering significant energy cost saving.

Parallel working Enables the ACTIVEmatic FA30 ACTIVE HARMONIC FILTER series to be added at later stage in parallel to meet increasing demand. Parallel of diff erent ratings is also possible.

Lcd panelA special black back-light off ers access to all parameters, waveforms & spectrums for management of both ACTIVE FILTER and system power quality. The graphic display and control panel gives easy access for Load, Source & AF ratings.

Superior current-limit capabilityAHF will continue to operate at full compensating mode without shutdown or malfunction in the event of additional loads being added. No overload risk on the existing Active Harmonic Filters will occur. Furthermore harmonic resonance risk is absent.

Capacity ratingsFrom 30A to 300A it may increase the maximum capacity up to 1500A by using parallel technology. 3 and 4 wires versions are available and compensation capability ranges from 3rd till 50th harmonic order. Harmonic single activation can be made by means of user communication software.

Event logOf up to 300 records is available through the communication Software.

CommunicationAll of FA30 are equipped with Standard Communication Card RS-485 and Ethernet. Opening Protocol is MOD-bus which can be linked with dedicated monitoring software in the user-developed monitoring program version.

Power factor correctionFA30 Active filter can also correct Power Factor; the available power can be partially or totally dedicated to the compensation of reactive power.

User’s softwareA very user’s friendly and multi language monitoring software is available; it can make easier commissioning, fine tuning and trouble shooting. The same view can be made from remote via RS485 or Ethernet TCP/IP.

Working principle

• Distorted load generates a deformed current respect to the sinusoidal 1 form• FA30 Active Harmonic fi lter measures the load current, it works out the harmonic content and components, it generates the

same deformed wave but out of phase ( 2 )• The resulting current on supply side turns to be almost sinusoidal because the high frequency currents have been compensated 3

ACTIVEmatic Application fields As the Power Electronic operated loads are widely used in any filed of energy consumption, the need for Active Harmonic Filtration is spreading in Industrial as well as Private and Tertiary applications. The flexibility of ACTIVEmatic compensation allows their selection and implementation even at the design stage, without knowing the actual load profiles.ACTIVEmatic can also efficiently compensate harmonic currents along with other Power Quality devices, such as Power Factor Correction Banks and Voltage Stabilizers, that ICAR makes and offer as a comprehensive package.

• Variable Speed Drives• (UPSs) Uninterrupted Power Supplies• Building automation• Welding • Tunnel ventilation• Data centers• Marine propulsion• Large elevators and cranes• Oil and gas• Wind turbines• Paper mills• Steel industry• Cement industry• Automotive industry • Water treatment

The awareness of harmonic pollution consequences, is leading Energy Authorities in many countries to rule the maximum and allowed harmonic pollution generated by Energy Users; consumers are then led to monitor, to keep under control, and ofter to take measures to respect limits and avoid penalties.ACTIVEmatic is a valid remedy to improve power quality in most of the critical parameters.

The following standards applies for harmonics limits in electric networks:EN 61000-2-2, EN 61000-2-4, EN 61000-3-2, EN 61000-3-12, EN 61000-3-3
