Join us for the Fall 2017 TCU Faculty Favorite Lecture Series highlighting three different faculty members across campus. Hear what they’re passionate about! Only $10.00 per lecture (free to TCU faculty, staff and students). Pre-registration required – www.lifelong.tcu.edu or 817-257-7132.
THE MEDIEVAL WORLD OF GAME OF THRONESGeorge R. R. Martin, author of the popular The Song of Ice and Fire series, once explained in
an interview with Time magazine that he wanted
to combine the “realism of historical fiction” with
“the magic and the wonder” of fantasy in his books.
Many critics of his series have since argued that
the success of Martin’s fictional world of Westeros
is its realism, a realism that is deeply rooted in the
historical Middle Ages and medieval literature. In
this lecture, we will explore some of the historical
and literary sources from the medieval period that
provide the inspiration and foundation for Martin’s
books, and how the books and the TV show are a
sort of “gateway” into the real medieval past and
medieval literature.
IN SEARCH OF STEPHEN F. AUSTINThis lecture will examine the life and times of
Stephen F. Austin and explore how history and
historians have understood him over a century’s
time. Austin, the “Father of Texas,” has long been
enshrined in the public imagination as an authentic
American hero, but one who was colorless and
rather remote. Dr. Cantrell brings Austin’s private
life, motives, personality, and character into sharp
focus, revealing a driven man who successfully
mixed effort and cunning, idealism and pragmatism
to build an illustrious career.
SOCIAL IDENTITY TRANSITIONING This lecture introduces a theoretical concept known
as social identity transitioning (SIT). SIT is the process
of transitioning from a privileged to a marginalized
social identity in the context of close relationships. The
presenter will share examples of this process occurring
within the context of parent-LGBTQ adult child
relationships. Attendees will be introduced to current
theory, research, and practical applications of how the
SIT theoretical concept can inform inter-professional
practice and enhance interpersonal relationships
between family members and close relational partners.

BELLE EPOQUE, ART NOUVEAU IN THE GILDED AGE OF FRANCE The period between the Franco-Prussian War and World War I is remembered in France as a golden age of peace, prosperity and optimism. Cafè society blossomed and we will look at the emerging poster designs, and the modernism of Post-Impressionism, the Nabis, Fauvism and early Cubism. However, we will focus on Art Nouveau as influenced by Japanese art, the curvilinear forms of nature and a continuing rejection of clas-sic Academic art. Art Nouveau crossed many thresholds, and, in addition to graphic and fine art, we will see how these ideas crossed into architecture, furniture and fashion.

ART APPRECIATION IN THE COLLECTIONS OF FORT WORTH MUSEUMS Kimbell docent Deborah Reed repeats a popular class that shows one doesn’t have to travel to world capitals to learn about great art. She will guide students through the art collections of the four art museums in Fort Worth. Students will see art as a logical continuum linked from ancient times to the 21st century, focusing on aspects of patronage, underlying political and religious agendas and the impact of emerging technology like photography. The class will include a Sunday two-hour tour of the Modern, Amon Carter and Kimbell Museums.

WOW YOUR GUESTS - HOLIDAY WINE AND FOOD PAIRINGS When done correctly, pairing a dish with the perfect beverage will transform a great meal into a sublime one. Both wine and beer can complement flavors, and in this class, Richard King, co-owner, general manager and chief wine guy of Ellerbe Fine Foods will compare and contrast wine versus beer, and you’ll taste how each can influence your food, just in time for holiday entertaining. As a bonus, he’ll also educate you on buying wine and beer for yourself, as gifts (a popular holiday host/hostess selection) or even as a beginning collector. Fee includes supply fee. You must be 21 to register for this class.
WINE & FOOD 101 WITH CHEF JON BONNELL Do you want to learn the basics of how to taste, read a wine list and have enough knowledge not to be intimidated by wine conversation? Come discover what you really like, not just what the labels say you should. This two-day class is an introduction to the entire world of wine, taught for beginners who just want to be “in the know.” Taste twenty-six different types of wine, from the inexpensive to the rare “cult” wines, while exploring the basics of wine tasting. Class will take place at Bonnell’s. Tuition includes a supply fee. You must be 21 to register for this class.

USING MEMOIRS TO CREATE A NARRATIVE OF LIFE AROUND CONTINUOUS GROWTH Our life should promote our continuous growth as a whole person. All healthy lives depend on our growth not only intellectually, but also psycho-emotionally and spiritually. This class will explore these concepts operationally and the importance of balanced growth, and investigate how each influences our development and our lives, individually and collaboratively. How can we use these concepts to construct a life and a story? One tool for experiencing this narrative construction is memoir. Participants will practice writing memoir episodes around themes essential to our growth as a whole person.
