SPECIAL FEATURES - BLU-RAY/DVD COMBO EDITION

They Saw Inerno:A 57 minute behind the scenes eaturette incorporating unseenmaterial and new interviews; a 9 minute introduction by Director Serge Bromberg;an extensive, high resolution image gallery eaturing rare photographs rom theoriginal production.

In 1964, director Henri-Georges Clouzot (Diabolique,The Raven, The Wages o Fear, The Picasso Mystery) chose

Romy Schneider, age 26, and Serge Reggiani, 42,

to star in Lener (Inerno), an enigmatic and original

project with an unlimited budget. Reggiani was to

play Marcel Prieur, the manager o a modest hotel

in provincial France who becomes possessed by

the demons o jealousy. Intended to be a cinematic

event upon its release, three weeks ater shooting

began on Inerno, things took a turn or the worse.

The project was stopped, and the images, which

were said to be incredible, would remain unseen...

    Until now.

Working closely with Clouzots widow, Ins, Serge

Bromberg reconstructs Clouzots original vision, lling

and explaining the gaps with new interviews, re-enact-

ments and Clouzots own notes and storyboards.

    Midway between documentary and narrative,

Henri-Georges Clouzots Inerno unveils, or the rsttime in nearly hal a century, these luminous visions.

It delivers an in-depth look at the masterpiece that

might have been and explores the unnerving parallels

between an artist and his work, eaturing the origi-

nal astonishing color expressionism that Clouzot

captured on celluloid, a visual exploration o the

    directors own anxiety.

Here are ourteen exciting short lms some avorites,

others unamiliar produced between 1902 and 1965.

They were photographed silent, but theyre not silent

anymore. All boast new music composed and per-

ormed by the Alloy Orchestra, a three-man ensemble

that critic Roger Ebert has called the best in the world

at accompanying silent lms. Alloy Orchestra shuns

the nostalgic approach, successully using ound per-

cussion and state-o-the-art electronics to reinvigorate

lms or new audiences with its unique sound, heard

here in a spectacular variety o styles.

Following D.W. Griths Those Awul Hats rom 1909,

the program proceeds in chronological order with

many o the shorts separated by vintage hand-painted

slides created or use in movietheaters a century

ago. The selections are A Trip to the Moon (by Georges

Mlis, with his original English narration), Dream

    o a Rarebit Fiend(Edwin S. Porter), The Red Spectre

Charles Chaplin came to Mack Sennetts KeystoneStudios late in 1913 as a little-known Britishvaudevillian, and ater a year, had established hisTramp character, learned to write and direct his ownlms, and also achieved public recognition as a star

comedian. Although Keystone did not publicize itsperormers by name, standees o Chaplins likenessoutside theatres suced to attract audiences.

The act that all but one o the Chaplin Keystonesexist is due to the stars enormous subsequent popu-larity. Most o the original Keystone negatives weresimply printed away and the survival o all but a ew

depends upon a ew original prints, a number o reis-sue prints, and some duped prints rom later years.

With the support o Association Chaplin (Paris),35mm ull aperture, early-generation materials weregathered over an eight year search on almost all thelms rom archives and collectors around the world, and were painstakingly pieced together and restored

by the British Film Institute National Archive, theCineteca di Bologna and its laboratory LImmagineRitrovata in Italy, and Lobster Films in Paris. Mostare now clear, sharp and rock-steady, although somereveal that their source prints are well-used and a

handul survive only in 16mm. One can now under-stand Chaplins meteoric rise, or it is possible or therst time in generations to see clearly what clever andimaginative lms he made at Keystone.

Laila, 1929s epically scaled Norwegian eaturecomes rom Danish-German director and noted

    cinematographer George Schnevoigt, who brings

every exotic corner o on-location Scandinavia

to the oreront in a decades-spanning romantic

adventure. Mona Mrtenson is Laila, a young girl

separated rom her parents as a baby and raised

by a wealthy reindeer owner, Aslag (Peter Malberg),

    in the rozen tundra.

Though she is returned a year later, Laila grows

into a young woman o two worlds, at home with

both her settled and nomadic upbringings.

Laila soon nds hersel in a love triangle with her

oster brother Mellet (Henry Gleditsch) and her

cousin Anders (Harald Schwenzen), played out

against the backdrop o an encroaching plague.

Expertly photographed with a shockingly modern

cinematic fair, Laila goes rom snowy mountain-

tops to lush green valleys, eaturing treacher-

ous wateralls, packs o rampaging wolves and

    reindeer-pulled sled chases.

Recently resurrected by and proudly presented in

conjunction with the Norwegian Film Institute, Laila

boasts a restored transer and all-new subtitles

This 2-disc set includes two bonus lms: The Golden Twenties(1950), a documentaryeature produced by The March o Time rom authentic ootage o the era; and Oscar-winning Lauren Lazins The Flapper Story(1985), in which several sel-declaredchildren o the roaring twenties look back across the decades on their youthul lives.

    SPECIAL FEATURES

A short lm by Ren Clair, La Tour(The Eiffel Tower)(1928) and Ferdinand ZeccasNoce en Goguette(Fun After The Wedding)(1907), typical o the early lms thatinspired Clair.

The Italian Straw Hatis Ren Clairs sparklingcomedy o manners a witty, delicate, inspired

satire on propriety and behavior in the bourgeois

mind-set. This is the only complete edition ever

available to American viewers. Transposing the

action o the perennial stage arce rom 1851 to a

summer wedding day in 1895 the birth o cinema

Clair recalls detail, costume and design captured

by the rst movies. The lm triumphantly survives

its 1927 journey rom stage to screen; a dozen ec-

centric characters, superbly acted, try desperately

to keep up appearances in the ace o disaster, their

attitudes, concerns and gestures exquisitely stylizedunder Clairs det orchestration. The sets and

costumes, too are a charming combination o the

    suocating and the exact.

A bridegroom is riding to his marriage when his

horse eats a straw hat hanging on a branch while its

owner, a married lady, enjoys a tryst behind the bush

with her lover, a erce hussar. She cannot go home

without her hat, so the groom interlaces his wedding

with an attempt to nd madam a twin chapeau,

launching a series o misunderstandings and embar-

rassments. The Italian Straw Hathas ew cinematicequals and inspired Pauline Kael to observe One o

the unniest lms ever made so expertly timed and

    choreographed that arce becomes ballet.

Sexy, jazz-loving and dressed to kill, Roxie Hart

(Phyllis Haver) has a doting, handsome husband

in Victor Varconi; not to mention a gold-digging

aair on the side with Eugene Pallette, who pays

and pays, eventually with his lie. Put on trial or

murder, Roxie secures lawyer Billy Flynn (Rob-

ert Edeson), equal part mob mouthpiece and

publicity agent. When Roxie hits the headlines,

    the courtroom theatrics begin.

Like the musical Chicago that won the Best Picture

Academy Award and ve other Oscars in 2002,

this original 1927 version descends rom a 1926 hit

Broadway play by Maurine Watkins. Its a terrically

entertaining mix o humor and melodrama as well as

a pungent critique o trash journalism. Frank Urson

signed Chicago as director, although it is substantiallythe work o Cecil B. DeMille and his A-list technical

sta. (DeMille apparently judged it unseemly to

take ull credit or this cynical and secular story

while his religious spectacle The King o Kings was

still in theatres!) Chicago is silent lmmaking at itspeak, with an outstanding score or this edition by

the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra. The 1927

Chicago was long believed a lost lm, but a perectprint survived in Cecil B. DeMilles private collection.

Restored by the UCLA Film and Television Archive

in 2006, it has since been widely perormed to

    rapturous audiences.

    This edition includes a brochure

essay by Thomas Pauly on author

    Maurine Watkins and the actual

background oChicago, notes byRobert S. Birchard, author oCecilB. DeMilles Hollywood, and a specialdocumentary supplement, Chicago:The Real Roxie Hartby JeeryMasino and Silas Lesnick based on

Miss Mend, an action-packed adventure serial inthree eature-length episodes, was produced in

Russia with the goal o rivaling, and possibly even

surpassing, the most entertaining American movies

    o the 1920s. Instead o the avant-garde works

o Sergei Eisenstein and Dziga Vertov, Russian

audiences were enchanted by ast-moving Ameri-

can lms starring serial queens like Pearl White,

    swashbuckling heroes like Douglas Fairbanks,

and comedians rom the Keystone Cops to Lloyd,

    Keaton and Chaplin.

Miss Mendmeets them all head-on and hardlystops or breath. It eatures beautiul location

horse, car and boat chases and a spectacular train

wreck), all interspersed with visual reerences to

Mabuse. But the lm partially set in an imagined

America where everything is new and progressive

also includes pointed comments on labor relations,

Mastered in high denition rom superb 35mm lm

Bardelys the Magnifcent, once thought lost orever, and Monte Cristo are two resurrected classics bothtop-o-the-line productions starring John Gilbert,

one o the most handsome, passionate and popular

    stars o the 1920s.

Bardelys the Magnifcent(1926) is based upon thenovel by Raael Sabatini and directed by King Vidor,

who just one year beore had directed Gilbert in the

smash hit The Big Parade. Set in France, the Marquis

de Bardelys (Gilbert), a casual womanizer and ac-

complished swashbuckler, is entranced by Roxalanne

de Lavedan (Eleanor Boardman). Set against abackground o knavery and intrigue, he attempts

to woo and win her. Lavishly mounted and superbly

directed, Bardelys is a hugely entertaining romanticadventure.

In Monte Cristo (1922) adapted rom the novel byAlexandre Dumas, and directed by Emmett J. Flynn

Gilbert is Edmond Dantes, a sailor seeking revenge

ater being unjustly imprisoned or twenty years. This

original Fox Film production spared no expense on

JAccuse, Gances extraordinary breakthroughwork, is a World War I drama considered to be

one o the most technically advanced lms o the

era and the rst major pacist lm. This seminal

cinematic achievement stars Marise Dauvray as

Edith, a young woman who is unhappily married

to an older man, Franois (Sverin-Mars), but

is actually in love with a young poet, Jean Diaz

(Romuald Joub). Both Jean and Franois end up

on the ront lines o World War I while Edith is

captured by German orces and suers atroci-

ties at the hands o the soldiers. Gance contrasts

individual human suering with the larger horrorso war, depicted with stark realism.

JAccuse introduced such technical advancesas rapid-cut editing style and highly expressive

camerawork and lighting. Gance, who had served

briefy in the military, returned to active service in

1919 in order to lm real battle scenes to include

in the project. In the early 1920s, Gance revised

the plot, titles, and editing or peacetime pre-

sentation. That had been the only version o the

lm available until now. This new French-titled,

tinted edition is a reconstruction o the lms

original 1919 montage. It contains many original

art cards with optional English subtitles.

This two-disc DVD set eatures The Italian (1915)and Trafc in Souls (1913), two riveting andimportant social dramas rom the earliest years

o eature-length cinema on the American silent

screen. Representing a time when movies were

more dedicated to advocacy and reorm than to

escapist entertainment, both are honored with

inclusion in The National Film Registry (which

selects up to twenty-ve culturally, historically

or aesthetically signicant lms each year).

The Italian, produced by Thomas H. Ince anddirected by Reginald Barker, stars George Beban

as the character o Beppo, a gondolier who comes

to America and settles in lower Manhattan. There,

he operates a shoeshine business, eventually saving

enough money to import his ance. Crime and

poverty soon impact their lives and there is no

articial happy ending. Exploiting a recent expos

o prostitution rings, Trafc In Souls is a veryaccomplished work or its time. Making excellent

use o New York City locations, the lm proved

to be a huge nancial success.

In addition, this two-DVD set presents three lms

rom the pioneer Edison Company: Police Force,New York City(1910), The Call o the City(1912)and McQuade o the Trafc Squad(1915).

Never beore released in the United States, this

monumental French lm is one o the most extraor-

dinary achievements in the whole history o cinema.

Written and directed by Abel Gance, three years in

production and or its time unprecedented in

length and complexity o emotion, La Roue pushedthe rontiers o lm art beyond all previous eorts.

The story deals with Sisi, a locomotive engineer who

saves Norma, an inant girl, rom a train wreck and

raises her as his adopted daughter. Norma thinks

Sisis son Elie is her brother and, when the two all

in love, she leaves to marry a virtual stranger. Sisiis also obsessed with her and the plot elaborates

this triangular relationship. German director G. W.

Pabst, an ardent admirer oLa Roue, was encouragedby Gances example to undertake his own remarkable

explorations o human psychology in such silent

lms as Pandoras Boxand Diary o a Lost Girl.

Gance pioneered a dazzlingly innovative style o rapid

    montage that revolutionized lmmaking around

the world. Like Intolerance and Citizen Kane, La Rouebecame a source book o cinematic invention that

reverberated in countless other classic lms over the
