What are the major threats to Indian agriculture? Chemicals, Fertilisers, Pesticides, GM crops etc. all modern methods pose a greater threat.

Do you think abundant agricultural production is possible without the aid of modern technologies of today? Yes, it is very much possible. Our grand fathers and their fathers made it possible.

Has higher education displaced the children of farmers effectively out of agriculture? Not only education, it is the mindset of the people. A farmer does not want his son to be a farmer.

List the measures required to rejuvenate Indian agriculture. Through organic farming only.

What can be done to bring back our traditional agriculture throughout the nation? Creating Awareness among the people about the toxicity of the foods they get from modern agricultural methods.

Share the most memorable moment that made you proud. My association with Nammalvar Ayya . That period is most memorable which make me feel proud.

What is your long-term ambition? To have a self sufficient natural life. A housewith a farm aroundwhere I can farm and produce my own food.

What inspired you to take to agriculture? My parents were in agriculture and they don’t want me to take up agriculture. From my childhood I had a thought if no one takes up agriculture, then what we would do for food in the future. That is the basic seed. And my association with Nammalvar Ayya added to the inspiration.

How you managed to convince your parents? Itwasverydifficulttoconvincemyparents.Istruggledfor6monthsto convince them. Finally when they understood the importance of organic farming they let me take it.

What and where are you now? IamafarmerinOrganicVillefarmatVembakkam,off Tambaram.And also, I have been adopting organic farming in our land in my native place.

Is what you earn through agriculture sufficient to have a decent livelihood? If not how do you manage? Yes,itissufficientformylivelihood.

In today’s context, how agriculture is important to India? Agriculture is very important to India. We should not move into a situation where a country which provided food to the whole world will start importing food from other countries.

S. Kesavamoorthy, son of a farmer, has completed B.E (CSE) at Coimbatore in 2012. Unlike several engineering graduates who embraced IT field, Kesavan has gone back to his father’s profession – agriculture, and has taken up organic farming.
